Chapter 3: Reunion at Work

1172 Words
Sophie stared at Luke, unsure of how to react. Her heart pounded in her chest, its rapid beat almost drowning out everything else in the room. There he stood, in the flesh, the man who had once meant everything to her, the man who had broken her heart and left her wondering if love was just an illusion. The years between them seemed to evaporate in an instant, leaving nothing but a raw, unfinished thread of emotions and memories that she wasn’t prepared to face. Luke was the same in some ways, but different in others. The light in his eyes had dulled, replaced by a quiet seriousness. He was no longer the carefree man she remembered, the one who had always known exactly how to make her laugh. In the time that had passed, he had grown older, more hardened, but also more refined. There was something about him now that made Sophie feel as though she were staring at a stranger rather than the man she had loved. He cleared his throat, breaking the uncomfortable silence that hung between them. "I didn’t know you were moving to New York, Sophie," he said, his voice steady but with a hint of surprise. "I–" He hesitated for a moment, as if searching for the right words. "I didn’t know it was you." Sophie nodded stiffly, her breath catching in her throat. "I guess we both have some catching up to do." She could hardly get the words out. The anger, the hurt, the confusion, all the emotions that had built up over the years, rose up within her, but she pushed them down, burying them behind the walls she had so carefully constructed. Luke took a step toward her, but Sophie held her ground. She wasn’t ready to let him get close. Not yet. Not after everything that had happened. "I didn’t expect this," Luke continued, his voice softer now. "I didn’t think I’d see you again." Sophie couldn’t help but notice how his words felt like a confession, a statement layered with guilt. A part of her wanted to lash out, to tell him how much his absence had destroyed her, how his decision to walk away had haunted her every day since. But instead, she took a deep breath, forcing the anger back down. "Neither did I," she replied, her voice flat, as though she were discussing the weather rather than her own shattered heart. There was an awkward pause, and Sophie suddenly found herself wishing she could escape, retreat to the comfort of her new office and shut the door behind her. But this was her new life, her fresh start, and running wasn’t an option anymore. Luke seemed to realize this, too. He shifted uncomfortably, clearly aware of the tension between them. "I didn’t mean to... I mean, I never expected you to be here. I thought you were... well, I thought you’d moved on, moved somewhere else." Sophie couldn’t bring herself to look him in the eye. Her gaze dropped to the floor, trying to steady the rush of emotions threatening to overwhelm her. It was like being pulled back into a storm she had fought so hard to escape. She exhaled slowly. "I moved on," she said, her words careful, measured. "But New York is different. It’s a chance for me to start over, to rebuild. I’m not the same person I was when I left." Luke’s expression softened, a flicker of something like regret flashing across his face. "I know," he said quietly. "I know you’re not the same. I just... I never thought I’d see you again, Sophie. I never wanted to hurt you. I—" Sophie raised her hand, stopping him before the words could continue. "Don’t," she said firmly. "You’ve said enough already." She took a step back, putting physical distance between them. "I don’t need your apologies, Luke. Not now. Not after everything that happened." The words felt sharp as they left her lips, but Sophie wasn’t sorry. She wasn’t going to let herself be swallowed up by the same old pain again. She had done the work, buried her feelings, and learned to live without him. She wasn’t about to open the door to all of it again, especially not now, not when everything she had worked so hard to build was hanging in the balance. Luke looked at her, his eyes filled with something that Sophie couldn’t quite place. Was it guilt? Remorse? Or was it the same desire for reconciliation that Sophie had buried deep within her own heart for all these years? He finally nodded, his shoulders slumping slightly. "I understand," he said softly. "I won’t make this harder on you than it already is." For a moment, Sophie thought he was going to say more, apologize, plead for forgiveness, perhaps even tell her he had changed, that he was different now. But instead, he turned and began walking toward the door, his back turned to her as he reached for the handle. "Luke, wait," Sophie called out before she could stop herself. He stopped, his hand on the doorknob, and turned back to face her. His expression was unreadable, but there was a vulnerability there, one that Sophie wasn’t used to seeing. "I don’t know what to say," Sophie admitted, her voice quieter now. "I just... I don’t know how to do this. To work with you. To be around you." Luke didn’t respond immediately. He stood still for a few seconds, as though weighing her words. Then, he spoke, his voice low and calm. "I understand. We’ll figure it out. I’ll keep things professional, Sophie. I promise." Sophie nodded, but the weight of the promise didn’t ease the heavy lump in her throat. She didn’t trust him. Not yet. Not after everything. But for the sake of her job, and the fragile peace she was trying to build in her new life, she would have to find a way to coexist with him. It wasn’t going to be easy. Luke left the office without another word, and Sophie stood there, staring at the door he had just walked through, as if trying to will the past to stay locked behind it. The silence in the room was deafening. The quiet hum of the building outside, the rush of her own breath, the thudding of her heart, it was all too much. Sophie sank into the chair at her desk, her hands trembling slightly as she grasped the edge for stability. She wanted to cry, to scream, to let it all out, but she couldn’t. She was in control now. She had worked too hard to get here, to let one man, no matter how deeply he had hurt her, take away her peace. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and tried to center herself. There was a new path before her, one that had nothing to do with Luke Bennett. And yet, Sophie couldn’t help but wonder: was that true?
