Chapter 18 More Than an Empire

2090 Words
As they enjoy their dinner of homemade pizza and salad, Marco arrives with preliminary setup questions. For the next hour, they discuss rules and regulations for the project, legal safeguards to protect themselves, and different options for structuring the organization to ensure its future. Finally, Marco leans back in his chair, shaking his head in amazement. "This project is really taking shape in just a few hours. I can't believe it. I've never seen anything come together this fast." Zora chuckles and shakes her head. "No, it isn't. You have to remember, what I'm telling you comes from years of work in the field, countless failed attempts at trying new modalities, and ideas I've carried around in my head for years—constantly refining them long before I ever met either of you. We're just putting them into words now. It could still take years to develop, if it ever happens at all." Silence settles over the table as the realization sinks in. Val slowly shakes his head. "Zora... you're remarkable. To have this kind of insight and never have had the opportunity to put any of it into practice... that's not normal. Most people would have abandoned those ideas years ago. Instead, you kept refining them, working through every detail, waiting for an opportunity that never came." Zora shrugs her shoulders and says, "It's really not like that; it was more of a daydream, something that kept the mundanity of life at bay, not like a vision unrealized. If it were that case, you're probably right; I would have just let it go, thinking I’d never make it happen, but the truth is that I never thought it would ever happen; it was just wishful thinking." Both men share a look that years of secret communication make easy; both men understand the underlying message that she didn’t think it worthy of consideration, maybe even that she herself was unworthy of this consideration. Marco looks between both of them and he sees something different in both of them that their union not only seems to give her the stability she has never known but that it is healing his best friend and boss by creating something worth fighting for, and in the end it will help thousands if not millions of others. He feels privileged to be a part of it but also a little envious of their relationship, for he has been lonely for a very long time. Marco then leans on his forearms and says, "You do understand that this is special, very special, and you need to feel that you are creating something this remarkable, and we are just the path to help you do it, and I for one am excited about the possibility." Zora blushes at his words as she also sees Val nodding in agreement while he reaches out and grabs her hand under the table and gives it a gentle squeeze. Val finishes the last slice of pizza and refills her glass of sparkling apple cider. He watches her finish her salad and says, "Are you ready for that swim now?" and she lights up at the prospect, saying, "Absolutely, but we’ll have to sit poolside while our food digests for a little while first. Can we have some sweet tea out there? That would be great!" She asks, and Val motions for one of the servants to follow her request. They nod in acknowledgment as Zora smiles and thanks them. As they reach the terrace, the water gleams like glass under the afternoon light, surrounded by stone and climbing jasmine. Val settles into a lounge chair beside her and says, "I thought about what he could do here. All I did was add the jasmine. I figured you would like to have the sweet smell to cover the smell of the chlorine, but we can do whatever you like in the space." Zora turns to look at him and back at the terrace poolside seeing that the hot-tub is raised above the pool with a waterfall coming over the side of the hot-tub into the pool and she remarks "you see the waterfall it would be neat to have ferns and things around there anything that would be resistant to the chlorine over-spray when it occasionally hit the leaves, anything natural that we can add would make it seem like an oasis," she says this with a dreamy look on her face. Val looks contemplative and then responds "That sounds lovely. I’ll get the grounds-man on it tomorrow." He nudges her to go swimming now and says Swim as long as you want, then we’ll go into the Jacuzzi under the stars and relax just us." His voice drops when he says to her, "You’re glowing, Zora; this is what you were meant to have. Enjoy it." Marco goes to turn on the propane heaters, for it’s still early spring and a bit chilly as the evening sun drops behind the horizon. Marco flicks the propane heaters to life; they hum, warming the air around the Jacuzzi. He settles beside Val with the weight of someone carrying operational details and starts discussing business while Zora jumps off the diving board. Marco says to Val, "The Castellano's are moving product through Atlantic City again, three shipments this week alone." Val’s jaw tightens, but his eyes stay on the water when he asks, "Fentanyl?' Marco nods grimly then says, "Heavy concentrations; they're testing distribution channels before the spring push." In the pool, Zora surfaces from the dive, water cascading off her shoulders. Val watches her move through the water with fluid grace-unaware she’s his anchor while Marco discusses the machinery of his empire. Marco continues with his warning... "We need to accelerate the rehabilitation centers, give people an alternative before the Castellano's hook them deeper". Marco glances at Val, waiting for his response. Val comments, "She’s changed your strategy already." Marco laughs a full-face, meaningful laugh and says "Of course she has...She’s brilliant and bold I see now what you saw why you were so obsessed. I thought you had lost it buddy." He chuckles softly, "but I get it now and I will do everything I can to make her vision for the two of you and this world happen. I have never felt better about what we are about to do than I do now, like I could be proud about what we are building and finally get married too." Val turns to Marco, and for the first time in decades, something vulnerable crosses his face as he turns to his best-friend and says "Get married, really? You mean it, don’t you?' Marco’s laughter fades into something deeper- genuine. He gestures toward the pool where Zora glides through the water and says, "I’ve watched you build empires, Val. Watched and helped you destroy men without blinking. But this...This is the first time I’ve seen you build something instead of burn it, and I want to see more of this." Val’s hand clenches as he looks deep into the eyes of his best friend and right-hand man as he admits, 'She terrifies me, Marco. Every single day. But with her... I want to be better. I want to matter for something real to her, to what she sees; it all matters." In the distance, Zora surfaces, water streaming from her hair, alive and beautiful. Marco places a hand on his shoulder while he says 'Then we make it happen. All of it, do you think she has a sister or a bestie?" He says with a chuckle but with hope attached. Val’s head snaps toward Marco. A slow smile spreads across his face-dangerous and calculating. As he leans back in the chair, fingers steepled, "She has a daughter, thirty-seven, and two granddaughters and... a best friend from her counseling days. She runs a recovery center downtown; they’ve been tight for years." Marco’s expression shifts-he’s already thinking three moves ahead. Val watches Zora float on her back in the pool, unaware. Marco looks at Val and says "You’re not suggesting what I think you’re suggesting, are you? I wasn’t serious..." and Val’s voice drops. "I’m suggesting we build something bigger than just us. A network. People who believe in what she believes in. People we can trust and if something happens then it happens." He says with a smirk on his face as Marco continues "I was just thinking I want something like what you tow have that you both would approve of I’ve never wanted someone to join me in this world but with what you’re building with her Val I feel I can just maybe get to do that what do you think could I?" Marco asks with genuine curiosity Val studies Marco-his oldest friend, the man who’s been his shadow for twenty-three years. There’s something almost vulnerable in the question. Val nods his head as he answers the question "Of course you can and you deserve it more than most you have always put yourself last helping others is who you are and you deserve someone who sees that and the man underneath the pain. Find someone who sees the world the way she does. Someone with purpose, not just ambition. Someone who makes you want to burn it all down and build something real instead that women who runs the recovery center. Zora’s friend, she’s been fighting the same fight. Introduce yourself, not as my consigliere, as a man who wants to help her vision." Marco nods slowly, processing. Val’s expression hardens with clarity. In the pool, Zora surfaces again, laughing at something-pure, unguarded joy. Then Val smiles looking over at Zora’s joy and says to Marco. "That’s how you know it’s real, Marco. When you stop thinking like a criminal and start thinking like a partner. " Val watches Zora with a hint of heat as she steps out of the pool grabbing the towel on the side and stepping towards them with a smirk on her face for she knows just what he’s thinking about as she looks into his eyes. She had heard about the request Marco made about wanting his own partner and vale Mentioning Vicki. Water drips from Zora's shoulders as she approaches. Val’s breathing shifts-heat flickering across his features as her eyes meet his. Marco stands immediately, reading the moment with the precision of someone who’s spent decades understanding unspoken language. As he rises he says "I’ll check on desert." He moves toward the house, leaving them at the pool’s edge. Val rises slowly, his gaze tracking every droplet sliding down her collarbone, as he states. "You heard.. Marco deserves what we are building and Vicki- She’s exactly his kind of fighter." This was not a question. His voice carries the weight of a man watching his world realign. He steps closer wrapping the towel tighter across her shoulders as well as his arms as Zora states "She’s gonna be a little hard for him to crack she’s been hurting and alone for a long time but she’s worth it, if he’s willing to put in the effort. I can invite her down here for the weekend it would give us time to get stuff her and I could say I need her help with it." Val’s eyes darken with appreciation-not just for the strategy, but for how she thinks, pulling her close he says "you’re brilliant, Vicki won’t see it coming. She’ll think she’s helping you settle in, instead, she walks into Marco’s world maybe even joining us on the project. This weekend. I’ll have the east wing guest house prepared. Marco needs to see her in our space-where she belongs and doesn’t even know it yet." Water still clings to her skin. He leans down, breathing her in. His voice drops to a whisper against her ear. "You’re orchestrating lives now, Zora. Building futures, just like you’ve built mine." Zora pulls away slightly and looks up at him through her eyelashes and says Right then Marco comes back from the kitchen being followed by several staff members and a cart full of decadent deserts and oil lamps. Val wraps her in a warm luxury robe and leads her toward the outdoor dining area with his hand on her back then pulls out her chair for her and says softly "my lady." She smiles at him and the gesture and say "such a gentleman..." the staff arrange the table with practice efficiency filled with Crème Brulee, Milie-Feuille and Tiramisu and Semifreddo.
