As they walk through his front door, he says, “I’ve arranged for us to dine outside tonight,” and leads them to the balcony. As they step out onto the balcony, the table is set under the stars on the terrace with fairy-lights and lanterns. She quirks a brow, wondering where they came from. It isn’t a touch a man like Val would consider having at the ready; he’s more of a tiki-torch kinda guy. What’s up with this? She notices more tiny romantic touches and smiles.
Then says, “The chef must have heard that I’m not just some girl you're trying to bed.” She giggles...as Val sets down his wine glass, watching her notice the lanterns strung between the terrace columns. His expression shifts-caught. He leans back in his chair, the corner of his mouth quirking. “Marco didn’t mention you.. I did, two months ago. I told her everything- what I wanted, who you were, what I had learned from watching you for a month. Her and Marco have been waiting for this for a while; they know what you mean to me.” The fairy lights cast soft shadows across his face. He reaches for her hand across the table. “Antonia has been waiting for me to stop being a ghost in my own life.”
The fairy lights cast soft shadows across his face; his fingers trace the outline of her fingers and says, “No, you're not some-girl, you never were.” She takes a deep breath, then with twinkling eyes looks out at the city skyline as the sun sets, sighs a contented sigh of peace and resignation. Val watches her-really watches her-as the city lights begin to compete with the dying sun. Her contentment settles something in him that’s been restless for years. He doesn’t speak words that would ruin this moment. Instead, he squeezes her hand gently, his thumb tracing slow circles on her skin. The evening deepens around them. Enzo’s breathing becomes rhythmic, the dog drifting toward sleep.
The fairy lights glow in amber warmth. Val lifts her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles without breaking eye contact. As he whispers “Stay right here just like this with me, please….”His voice is low, desperate- prayer more than a request. She looks him in the eyes, smiling at the way he seems to really see her, frightening as it maybe she thinks that no-one has ever done that before, and it feels nice and warm. Something she has longed for her whole life just to be seen and understood and maybe just maybe loved anyway. Val’s hand tightens on hers, his dark eyes holding steady-unflinching in their intensity. He doesn’t look away. Doesn’t soften it with a smile or lighten it with humor.
This is what he does. He sees. He leans forward slightly, his voice low and certain. “I’m not going anywhere, Zora. Not now, not tomorrow, not next month, not when things get hard, you can stop waiting for the other shoe to drop…”
His thumb continues its slow rhythm on her skin. A pause….I’m all in. The most dangerous promise a man like him can make. Her heart starts to pound in her chest for him. That statement is more of a vow than saying I do...and it is only the first full day of them being together; what will it be like moving forward?
I hope it doesn’t turn toxic and just stays warm, steady, grounded, but no one can tell until it happens, so she thinks to herself, and I will see what happens next, yes, as she looks up at him through her eyelashes and says, “I am not going anywhere either.” Val’s breath catches. For a moment, he’s still-a man who’s orchestrated empires, broken wills, commanded armies, brought to stillness by four words. His free hand moves to her face, cradling her jaw with surprising gentleness. His thumb brushes her cheekbone. “Then we’re doing this.. No running, no games, no pretending tomorrow might be different.”
His voice is rough, edged with emotion he doesn’t bother hiding anymore. He pulls her from her chair, drawing her close. The city lights blur around them. “Just us, building something real.” Enzo lifts his head, sensing the shift-the moment when everything solidifies into something neither of them can undo. Val kisses her then, slow and deep-tasting promise and osso buco on her lips.
He then suddenly supersizes her and picks her up and carries her into the bathroom, the water already filling the Jacuzzi tub, and she giggles and says, “I’m way too heavy; put me down. You’ll hurt yourself. I am way too big of a girl to be carried.” Val doesn’t even strain. He carries her effortlessly across the marble floor, her protest dissolving into surprised laughter. “You’re not heavy, you’re perfect, and I’m not some fragile thing that breaks under weight, Zora”. He says with a pit of cockiness and a smirk. He lowers her into the steaming water with deliberate care, keeping her hand in his as soon as he takes her clothes off.
He keeps her hand in his as she settles into the jets. Steam rises around them both as he strips off his shirt, sliding into the tub behind her. The water laps against them both. “This? This is the lightest I’ve felt in years.” His arms wrap around her, pulling her back against him. His lips find her shoulder. Enzo appears in the doorway, curious as to where his people went and deciding the bathroom is acceptable, curls up on the heated tile floor and starts snoring as he drifts off.
Zora sighs in contentment as she leans back into his arms and asks him to tell her more about the farmhouse. She says, “I have always dreamed of having a little farm with lots of animals, plants, and room for making her crafts. Also, can someone else pack my house up? Except I want to go get my super important stuff and my unmentionables. I don’t want staff or hired help knowing my kinky side,” she chuckles.
Val’s chest rises and falls against her back, his arms tightening around her waist as he paints the picture of what he hopes will be their new home, and she just said she wants her house packed up, and that makes him smile. “Fifty acres, the main house sits on a hill-stone and timber, restored but still raw. There’s a barn, a stable, pasture land that the rolling hills go into tree-lined forest. Room for everything you want and more; theirs, a grove that produces grapes for a local wine that I haven't put much into just let the workers do their thing.”
The water jets pulse, relaxing them both as he continues, “Chickens, goats, horses if you want them. A greenhouse, I’ve had the soil tested-it’s good, great nutrients.” He pauses, considering her second request. “I’ll have Marco handle the packing; he’ll get his guys to do it, and we'll go to your place tomorrow before the farm. You pack what matters. What’s private stays private-that’s between us. No one else needs to know anything about you except what you choose to show them. From this point on, you get to make whatever choices you choose.” His lips brush her ear, and Enzo snores louder, and they both chuckle at the sound.
She snuggles closer and brings his arms around her tighter and says, “Good, for there would be a scandal if everyone knew about my electrical harem drawer.” She giggles. “I’ve been single for a long time,” she blushes. Val laughs-a genuine, surprised sound that echoes off the tile. His grip loosens slightly, fingers splaying across her ribs as he repeats “your electrical harem drawer???” He repeats it like he’s savoring the phrase, amusement threading through his voice. “God, I love you”
The words slip out before he can catch them. He doesn’t try to take them back and just continues with “Zora, half the city fears me because they think I’m ruthless. The other because they don’t know what I’m capable of.” His chin rests on her shoulder, “But- you, you’ve got a drawer full of toys, and you’re worried about scandal. That’s the most human thing I’ve heard all week. Your secrets are safe with me, all of them.” Enzo shifts, dreaming and snorting.
She sighs with a bit of a chuckle and says, “Thank you. I don’t want the guys in your world to think of me like that...at least more than they automatically will. I want them to see me as sassy and powerful, not as some toy that you're using right now.” Val goes very still behind her. When he speaks again, his voice carries weight-the tone of a man making a vow. “They won’t see you that way because I won’t allow it. You walk into a room; they see a woman who survived her own past and built something real. Who challenges me, who I listen to”.
He shifts, turning her to face him in the water. His dark eyes are serious now. Water drips from his jaw as he cups her face with his hand and says, “You’re not a toy, Zora. You’re the reason I want to stop being a monster; you are everything I need right now.” Enzo’s tail thumps once against the tile, as if agreeing. She washes his arms with the sponge on the side of the tub as he sighs in contentment, as the sponge goes below the water to his legs, as she says “I know that is what you want them to see but honey honestly men all men have a mind of their own and as much as you push your will onto them they will still have their own opinions you can’t choose that for them. Eventually I will have to show them what I want them to believe about me and then prove it, and even then some men will always still see nothing but a woman who has you by your balls…”
She giggles and smiles”...I’m way smarter than you think, smarter than I’ve shown anyone in a long time. This part of me is the brightest part I’ve got this, don’t worry.” Val stills; the water stops moving around them. Something shifts in his expression-not offense, but recognition, respect...” You’re right. I’ve been thinking like a man who controls everything. You’re thinking like someone who understands power actually works.” He releases her face, leaning back slightly in the tub.
His dark eyes study her with new intensity. " You’ll show them, and they’ll learn. That brightness-that’s what terrifies Marco most. Not that you’re with me. That you’re smarter than all of us.” Enzo shifts, sensing the gravity of the moment. A pause, and the water jets hum to life softly. “So what do you need from me? Not what I want to give, what you actually need just ask.” Zora responds with, “You need to always be honest with me and try not to be overprotective. Don’t keep things from me to protect me I know you’re instinct will be to do the opposite but for them and everyone else that we’re trying to get to do things the way we want and to respect me for me you can’t be for you have to show them that you know I’m strong enough to handle anything they send my way even if you’re not sure if I can, you can never let them see it.”
Val goes still as the water laps against them both as he absorbs what she’s asking. “That’s a harder ask than anything else you’ve said. You want me to let you walk into danger and pretend I’m not terrified. Honest, that part I can do; I’ve been honest with you since the beginning.” His jaw tightens; he’s a man built on control, on protecting what’s his. He runs a hand through his wet hair, wrestling with her request.
As his dark eyes find hers, taking a long, deep breath, and his voice drops. “But stepping back while you prove yourself? Watching you face them without running interference? That’ll cost me, but you’re right. They need to see you’re not my weakness, you’re my strength, Zora.”
“Exactly, or they will come after me and we will always live in fear. I not only have to show I’m smarter but stronger, both mentally and physically, which means I may even have to bust some heads... maybe in some kind of fun way for now at least just to show some strength, but later when someone tries to test me and they will I may have to make a bigger example of it so it doesn’t repeat itself.” Val nods slowly, understanding, settling into his features like armor.
Water steams around them. His voice is quiet, certain as he pulls her closer. Enzo lifts his head, as if sensing the weight of what’s being decided. “You’ll need to be ruthless. Not cruel-ruthless. There’s a difference; cruelty is noise. Ruthlessness is mathematics. When the time comes, I won’t interfere. But I need to know you’re prepared for what comes after. The retaliation. The tests that follow tests.” She looks at him, agreement on her face as she says, “I think that they will always do that I’m a woman and they will always see that as a weakness for some anyway… but others will see it in my eyes and manner. " You're gonna see a different side to me, one who is more cunning, and I fight dirty.”
Val’s expression doesn’t change, but something ancient flickers behind his eyes-recognition of a kindred spirit. “There it is... cunning, dirty, those are survival skills, not character flaws. Don’t be ashamed of that way of thinking; it is going to serve you well.” He leans back, studying her with fresh understanding. The man who’s spent two decades in shadow sees her inside that shadow now. Enzo watches them both, sensing the shift-two predators recognizing each other.
As the water ripples as he moves closer, his thumb traces her jawline seductively. “I’ve underestimated you already. It won’t happen again, but ooo babe what a turn on this is...Show me that side, Zora. The one who claws instead of negotiates, who remembers how to survive in ways most people forget. That’s the woman they need to fear. My woman…” He grins. Zora smiles and giggles while she says with a grin “and they will then, I’ll make cookies” she laughs fully as Val throws his head back and laughs-a real, unguarded sound that fills the bathroom. “cookies and that right there is why I choose you, You break a man’s kneecaps and then bake him chocolate chip cookies like nothing happened, lesson learned...That’s psychological warfare, that’s genius.”
He pulls back to look at her, eyes bright with something between admiration and amusement. “Marry me...it’s not a question, it’s a statement of fact.” Her heart beats at the shock of his words, and she blinks several times, takes a deep breath, and kisses him gently, then says, “Baby steps first, then we run and jump off the cliff together not until then.”
