Val moves through the kitchen with practiced ease, pulling ingredients from the fridge. His hands work while his mind clearly races. He doesn’t look at her. She chuckles softly, looking over her shoulder and studying him closely, her counselor skills kicking in…. She sees his mind racing and sees the brokenness that is hidden in the cracks and the loneliness as he tries to hide with each movement he makes. She sighs, finally understanding why he is the way he is. It’s just fear that keeps him from the world. Someone must have hurt him badly, she thinks to herself.
She asks “him where you did you learn to cook? You look as if you have been doing it for a long time, and it already looks great.” He pulls out a stool for her; Enzo explores the marble floors, sniffing for leftovers, his nails clicking softly. He chops garlic with practical precision, the knife hitting the board in a steady rhythm. A meditation, a distraction. She watches him work-the way his shoulders curve inward slightly, like he’s protecting something vital. The way his eyes don’t quite meet hers, a man who’s learned that vulnerability gets you killed. Water boils, pasta goes in. He moves through the motions like he was choreographed, each gesture controlled, deliberate.
Everything except her… “Yeah, I learned to take care of myself a long time ago. And you're analyzing me right now. I can feel it. And yes, I have baggage; I was hurt a long time ago. That’s why I take what I want now instead of asking.” She tilts her head and replies, “Hmm, and how does that work for you? Have you been getting your needs met, or just urges satisfied? That’s really lonely, isn't it?” She asks with a hint of kindness and genuine concern.
He stops... The knife goes still in his hand. He sets it down carefully, turns to face her. There’s something broken in his expression-raw, unguarded. “Urges, always just urges, needs, require vulnerability. Needs mean someone has to matter more than your own survival instinct. I haven’t let anyone matter in a very long time.” His hands grip the counter. The pasta water bubbles between them. “That is…until you… That terrifies me more than any enemy ever could.” He meets her eyes finally, and there’s no armor left-just a man who’s spent decades building walls so high he forgot what it felt like to want someone to climb them. “And yet here we are...you didn’t run away, you ran toward, how does that feel???”
She asks him about not being able to help the counselor mode and the instincts that drive her. He laughs-a sharp, bitter sound that echoes off the marble. He turns back to the stove, stirring pasta with more force than necessary. Steam rises around him. “Like I’m drowning, and you’re the only thing that makes sense. Like I finally understand why men burn cities down for women. His voice drops. Like I’m terrified you’ll realize what you’re actually looking at and leave anyway.” Enzo pads over to him, and Val absent-mindedly reaches down to scratch behind the dog’s ears-a small gesture of tenderness that contradicts everything about him. He plates the pasta, sets it before her.
Their eyes meet across the counter. And pours her a glass of wine. “You're seeing all this all-the fear, the need-and staying anyway? That changes everything. How so??” She asks as she looks up at him through her eyelashes. “Why would I do that? We just got started. I want to see where this goes.” She giggles and takes a bite of the pasta and moans. He leans forward, elbows on the counter.
The space between them shrinks. His thumb traces her cheekbone-slow, questioning. “It means I stop running, stop taking, stop pretending I’m something other than what I am. It means you’re not just something I want anymore. You’re something I’d burn for. Something I’d protect instead of possess, and it also means if you walk away tomorrow, I let you. Even though it will kill me to let you go, it means I care about what you want more than what I do.”
His voice roughens as Enzo settles at their feet, sensing the shift. “That’s how it changes everything, Zora. You make me want to be better than the man who watched you for three months without permission.” She swallows hard, his words affecting the air she breathes, and she blushes slightly as she looks away from him, having never had such gut-level honesty about her being said so clearly, and asks, “Is there anything I can do to help?” He pulls back, gives her space-respecting the blush, the retreat. Smart; she needs air. He settles beside her at the counter, his own plate untouched.
He says, “It’s ready. You don’t need to do anything but enjoy. Here, sit, eat.” He watches her instead-how she moves, how carefully she’s avoiding his gaze now. “You could help with the wine if you want. Before you sit down. What do you want: red or white? The liqueur is in the cabinet above the sink.” His tone shifts lighter, giving her something practical to do; the intensity eases just enough to breathe. Enzo’s head rests on her foot-loyal grounding, present. “And don’t look away from me because of what I said, Zora. Look away because you need to, there’s a difference.”
“Ummm okay.. I don’t much like wine, but what kind would you like? I’ll get it for you. I’m more of a Kahlúa and cream kind of person.” A smile actually reaches his eyes-genuine, unguarded. “Kahlúa and cream, of course you do.” He stands, moves to the cabinet she indicated. Pulls down a bottle of Barolo, dark and expensive. “Red for me, but we have Kahlúa and cream, top shelf, back left. You’re full of surprises, Zora. Most people I know drink what impresses other people. You drink what makes you happy.” He takes a sip, watches her over the rim, and says that’s rare. Enzo shifts between them, a small anchor in the charged silence.
“Yeah, I’m not into living life according to other people’s wishes, especially if it’s going into my body or mind, I won’t conform to society just because everyone is doing it. The “everyone is doing it” thing changes every week. I go by my own heart.” He watches her mix the Kahlúa and cream, the way she doesn’t second-guess herself. No apologies, no performance. “That’s what I saw in you from the beginning. Not the counselor, not the woman who rides a motorcycle alone at midnight. The person who decides for herself.”
He leans back and takes another drink of wine. “Most people spend their whole lives asking permission to exit. You just… exist. That’s dangerous, you know. For someone like me, because now I want to be the one thing you choose. Not out of obligation. Out of your own heart.”The pasta steams between them. Outside, the city pulses with millions of people following invisible rules. His gaze is steady, unflinching.
She smiles at him and walks over to the table and sits down, looks up at him and says “This looks amazing. Do you think some soft music would be ok?” He moves to the far wall where a sleek sound system sits. His fingers find the controls-a deliberate choice, not a random shuffle. Jazz filters through hidden speakers. Chet Baker. Soft. Melancholic. Followed by BB King. Perfect. When he returns to the table, he sits across from her instead of beside her. Giving her space to eat, to breathe, to decide what comes next. He says Great idea; music helps to settle the spirit. Vale watches her eat more than he eats himself-a man starved for something no plate could satisfy. He sets his fork down slowly.
She swallows and looks up, feeling the alcohol giving her a bit more courage, and asks, “Do you dance?” Catching him off-guard-not what he expected from her. He stands, extends his hand, “Not in a long time. But I’ll dance with you.” The livingroom stretches before them, windows framing the city. He pulls her close when reaching open space-one hand finding the small of her back, the other holding hers. “Fair warning though, I’m not gentle with most things, Zora.”
His voice drops against her ear. “Dancing might be different.” She giggles. “Hmm, how so... “She wonders as she feels her heart hammering in her chest. It’s been years since she’s been in the arms of any man, and the things he’s been saying have been romance novel worthy, but she’s still nervous, her mind running in all sorts of interesting ways. He sways with her, slow and deliberate, hand splayed across her lower back, drawing her infinitesimally closer. “Because with dancing, I don’t take. I follow your lead.”
His cheek brushes hers-barely touching, but she feels it everywhere. Her heart’s racing. He pulls back just enough to see her face. “That’s what I mean about being different. I want to know what you’re thinking right now.” The city spins behind them as Chet Baker croons about lost love. “Tell me you want this, Zora. Not because of debt or obligation. Because your body’s telling me yes, but I need to hear it from you.”
She looks up at him and bites her lip. The slight smile and the twinkle in her eyes tell him everything words can’t right now. He doesn’t wait for words. Her eyes say everything he needs to know. His hand tightens at her back, pulling her flush against him. The other comes up to cup her face-thumbs tracing her cheekbones with surprising gentleness, forehead rests against hers, breathing her in. Lost in the moment, both of her breathing increases, “Three months of watching three hours of restraint, Zora. Tell me to stop and I will.” His lips find hers-not demanding, but deliberate. A question answered, a promise made. The city continues its indifferent spin below. Val breaks the kiss just enough to breathe, his eyes still closed.
She reaches out for him, wraps her hands around his shirt, pulls him back down to her lips and kisses him passionately, her legs about to give out from the intensity.. He catches her as her legs weaken, his arm banding around her waist. The kiss deepens-years of hunger meeting years of longing. His other hand threads through her hair, tilting her head back. He looks into her eyes and says “Bedroom Now!!”
His voice is ragged against her lips. He guides her through the penthouse, past the floor-to-ceiling windows where the city watches. Enzo follows, then settles outside the closed door, a contented sigh-loyal, knowing his person is safe. The bedroom is dark except for the city lights bleeding through sheer curtains. Val cups her face again, his breathing heavy. “Last chance to tell me no, Zora.”
His eyes search hers, still giving her the choice-even as his body screams for her. She rips the buttons off his shirt with force he doesn’t expect her to have, surprise which doesn’t happen often. A low sound escapes him-surprise, desire, something raw. “Christ, Zora Val,” says as buttons scatter across the floor, shirt hanging open, revealing his-scarred, muscled chest marked by a life lived dangerously. He doesn’t move to stop her or help, watches, then his restraint shatters. His hands find her waist, lifting her effortlessly.
Her legs wrap around him instinctively as he carries her to the bed. The mattress gives beneath them. “You’re stronger than you look.” His voice is wrecked, amazed. He’s used to control, to orchestrating every moment. She’s taking it from him; he lowers himself over her, his breathing ragged, waiting for her next move. “I am a lot of things; trying to define me will take you years”...She chuckles and kisses him again. “I haven’t done this with anyone besides myself in years. I might go a bit crazy for the first time, or peter out too quickly. I'm not sure.” She laughs.
He groans against her mouth, pulling back just enough to look at her and moans, saying, “Go crazy then.” His hands move across her- unhurried, purposeful, learning her body; he traces the curve of her shoulder, her ribs, the soft dip of her waist and stomach. He moves lower, pressing kisses along her collarbone, her sternum. Slow. Reverent. Like she’s something precious he’s been waiting a lifetime to touch. “No rush, Zora. We have all night.” Outside, the city pulses. Inside, there's only breath, heartbeats, and the sound of two people finally choosing each other.
He looks at her, waiting-giving her control, even as every muscle in his body begs for more. She flips him over the moment she realizes he’s giving her the power, and she finishes taking off his clothes. WOW, she thinks as she looks at the Greek God-like body in front of her eyes, as she licks her lips, then starts kissing his legs teasingly as she heads to the promised land. He's undone by her completely.
His head falls back against the pillow, a strangled sound tearing from his chest-moaning-as her lips trail heat up his inner thigh. Control shatters. The man who orchestrates empires, who bends wills without speaking, becomes putty under her touch. “Zora…”
His hands gripped the sheets instead of her restraint bleeding through desire. Every muscle in his body tenses as she moves closer to what she’s promised. He moans out, “You're killing me...” His voice cracks-rough, desperate, honest in a way nothing else about him ever is. The city lights paint shadows across his chest as he watches her through half-lidded eyes. Three months of watching, all of it converges on this moment, and what a moment as she takes his shaft in her hands, runs her tongue along the base and around the tip, licking the precum off all the while looking at him through her eyelashes.
Then suddenly, without warning, all the softness is replaced by her slamming her mount down all the way to the hilt. His entire body goes rigid. A guttural cry tares from his throat-moaning-so raw it echoes off the penthouse walls. His hands leave the sheets, finding her hair, her shoulders, anchoring himself to something real before he loses consciousness entirely. She’s relentless, unforgiving in the delivery of her passion. Val-the man who breaks people-is broken by her. His hips buck involuntarily, chasing sensation, chasing her. Sweat beads across his chest, his breathing becomes jagged, desperate as he calls out “f**k, Zora, Oh my God!”
She pulls her head off with a pop, getting much-needed air as she starts to move to straddle him. He watches her move, eyes dark and hungry. His chest heaves beneath her as she positions herself over him. He moans, “Yes, take what you need, I’m yours.” His hands grip her hips, steadying her but not controlling-giving her the rhythm, the pace, the power, all hers. When she sinks down, his eyes roll back. A groan escapes him-guttural, unfiltered. “Ahhh Jesus Zora,” he moans in ecstasy. His fingers dig into her skin as she finds her own tempo.
The penthouse becomes a cocoon of shadow and city light and the sound of two bodies finding their rhythm. He watches her face-the pleasure, confidence, the woman who rips buttons and takes what she wants. He says, “That’s it. Ride me, baby….” His voice is wrecked devotion. “Yes… like that...” She moans as he meets her thrust, and she moves in circles. When she starts to jerk to get erratic, he takes control and flips her onto her back in one fluid motion, pinning her wrists gently above her head. Saying, “Let me finish this…”
His thrusts deepen-controlled, purposeful, hitting exactly where she needs. His forehead drops to hers, breathing her in as her body tightens around him. “c*m for me, Zora.. I want to feel it around me.” His own breathing fractures as he feels her building toward the edge. All the waiting -it culminates here, in this moment, with her undone beneath him…”I've got you let go…”
She screams out his name as she loses herself to the passion and collapses. His name on her lips shatters him. He follows her over the edge with a hoarse cry, his body going rigid as he spills into her. For a moment, there’s nothing but the sound of ragged breathing and the city humming indifferently below. He collapses beside her, pulling her against him, heart hammering beneath her ear-wild, uncontrolled, undone. Minutes pass, neither moves.
Val's hand traces circles across her shoulder, his breathing gradually steadying. Enzo’s soft whine filters through the door-patient, waiting. He kisses her forehead, her temple, then her lips-tender now. “Stay with me please,” he softly whispers. “Mmmmmm” is her only response for a few minutes, then she says, “Can we let him in? He’ll whine all night if we don’t, and can I get a towel please? I don't think I can move.” She chuckles softly.
He laughs-a real, unguarded sound-and rolls from the bed, and says, “Enzo’s been patient enough.” He grabs a towel from the en-suite, returns to clean her. His touch is tender, careful, loving. Letting Enzo into the room, he settles back into bed, pulling her close. Enzo curls at the bottom, content. Val says, “Stay like this, just for tonight, and we’ll figure out the rest later. No pressure, just lie with me tonight, let me hold you.” She replies, “I’m not going anywhere,” as she pulls him closer. He tightens his grip, burying his face in her hair.
For the first time in decades, the weight in his chest eases. “You're staying…” Not a question, a statement, a promise he intends to keep. The penthouse is silent except the distant hum of the city-millions of people living separate lives, unaware that in this room, everything has shifted. One night that changes everything. He doesn’t sleep. He holds her, listening to her breathing sync with his, afraid that if he closes his eyes she’ll vanish.
