A Wedding Day to Remember

1180 Words
The gorgeously adorned walls of the large bridal room were bathed in a warm glow as the sun peeked through the drapes. After months of hopes and promises, Ajay and Kavya finally got to see the day they had been looking forward to. But as the days before the vows were drawing to a close, a spooky mix of fear and excitement began to simmer inside them. Ajay stood facing mirror while adjusting his royal blue sherwani, the fabric sparkled under the soft lighting. His friend Aryan entered, holding a small box filled with groom ornaments. “Dude, you look like groom,” Aryan said, a broad grin coming across his face. “Thanks man, I didn't knew it," Ajay replied, a slight smile breaking through his nervous demeanor. “I can’t believe it happening I'm nervous Aryan.” “You’ll be fine. Just remember, it’s about you and Kavya. Focus on your big day,” Aryan offered as he pulled out an ornament from the box and handed it to Ajay. “First, let’s get you ready for the function outside.” Kavya, meanwhile, was surrounded by layers of fine silk and elaborate needlework in another room. As she turned to look in the mirror, the bridal gown, a gorgeous crimson lehenga with gold accents, whirled about her. But instead of bringing her the happiness she should have, what she saw simply made her stomach churn. “Mom, I… I feel so nervous,” she confessed, her voice barely a whisper. Kavya’s mother wrapped her arms around her. “It’s normal, sweetheart. Remember, it's the big day of your life, just enjoy it instead of getting nervous. Take a deep breath. You are looking gorgeous". Kavya nodded, although her heart raced. Every thought, talk felt like shadowed with confusion and nervousness. Her relative called her saying it time. “You need to hurry! The guests are arriving, and the baraat is about to reach! You don’t want to keep Ajay waiting,” Relative aunt squealed. “Okay!” Kavya said, a mix of panic and excitement running through her. She turned towards mirror to see her look one last time , though her hands shook as she applied the final touches of her makeup. The location was a lovely garden with blossoming flowers, sparkling fairy lights, and tasteful arrangements that added to the enchanted atmosphere. The mood changed to one of joyful celebration as the ceremony got underway. As Kavya started to approach him with her parents at her sides, Ajay, who was standing beneath a canopy of marigold petals, felt his heart rush. Everything else vanished in that instant, leaving only her dazzling smile visible through her dupatta. A lifetime together was promised as the pair joined together in front of their loved ones, exchanging vows, smiling, and crying with happiness. Yet, with the end of the ceremony came the beginning of an entirely different journey—one that neither had fully grasped. After the rituals with family and after Aryan’s jovial attempts at lightening the mood, the couple found themselves retreating to their private suite for the first time as husband and wife. There was an odd tension in the air as they walked inside their room. Before turning to face Kavya, who was standing at the foot of the bed with her hands shaking and her breath coming in short, weak gasps, Ajay let down the bulky garlands around his neck. “Kavya?” Ajay’s soft voice, broke through her scared thoughts. “I… I need a moment,” she stuttered, staring at the floor as her heart pounded in her chest. Ajay walked closer, concern coming across his face. “Hey, look at me,” he murmured, gently cupping her face to make her look at him. “Just breathe. It’s okay to be nervous. We can take our time.” Kavya nodded, but the butterflies in her stomach danced “I..I thought I’d be normal b..but I'm get r..rreally nervous,” came the confession, her voice trembling. It's acceptable to feel that way because it's a significant change. You're not by yourself. He reached out to take her hand and reassured her, "We'll get through this together. "How about changing your dress? After that, we can just chat. The day has been long. With a shaky breath, Kavya slipped into the adjoining bathroom, grateful for the moment alone. She stared at herself in the mirror, trying to process everything. The beautiful bride she had envisioned was now a whirlwind of emotions. As she changed into comfortable loungewear, she let the fabric fall away, stubborn tears brimmed at the corners of her eyes. “Stop it, Kavya,” she told herself softly. “It’s just Ajay.” She came back to find Ajay sprawled on the bed, looking through the day's pictures on his phone. He raised his head and smiled, his face relieving the weight in her chest. "I reserved a place for you on the bed." “I appreciate that,” she said quietly, choosing to curl up on the couch next to him instead. There, she felt safer, as though putting some distance between them would allow her to quiet the inner voices. Ajay watched her, noticing her uncomfortable behavior. “You know you can share your thoughts with me.But do whatever you’re comfortable with,” he said gently, putting his phone aside. She replied lightly as she settled into the couch. “Can I admit something?” “Yes always” he replied with genuine interest, leaning on one elbow. “I thought I’d feel happiness and excitement, but honestly, I feel so confused right now. Like, is this even real?” A part of her felt embarrassed, but it was a relief to say it aloud. Ajay's face became softer. "I get that. Thinking about all the duties that come with being a husband this morning made me feel frightened. I realize that we must move forward in our relationship with mutual understanding, but sometimes it just gets to me too. Kavya felt a little better seeing him so relaxed. Knowing she wasn't alone in this was reassuring. What comes next? Do we simply shut the world off and get married? "Exactly. Let's be ourselves. Have no expectations. There are just two individuals working on this. He murmured, "Together," in a stern yet kind manner. As time passed and night falls, they talked about their dreams and childhood for hours, and their laughing filled the air between them. Kavya's concerns gradually subsided as their conversation's calming cadence took their place. She recounted her own amusing family stories and chuckled at Ajay's ridiculous impersonations. “What’s something adventurous you want to do?” Ajay asked, genuinely interested. “Skydiving!” Kavya confessed, shocking Ajay. “Skydiving? I didn’t expect that,” Ajay chuckled, surprised by her weird choice according to her personality. Hours slipped away, and Kavya felt herself at ease. Eventually, her eyelids grew heavy, and she leaned against the couch’s armrest and slept. Ajay also felt sleepy and turn to sleep.
