A story that had just started was going through rituals and difficult situations. Engagements had come and gone, and the wedding festivities had started in earnest among the sweet scents of sandalwood and marigold. Even though they were officially "betrothed," Ajay and Kavya were still having trouble getting past the awkwardness of their relationship at first.
Shopping for the wedding had become a huge problem for Ajay, because he hated it. As they moved through the racks of a local boutique, Ajay’s demeanor often reflected the frustrations he felt, perhaps due to the pressure of mixed emotions. Kavya, on the other hand, was sweet, reserved; her shyness wrapped around her like a blanket, making her hesitant to voice her opinions or choices.
“Ajay, what do you think about this?” Kavya held up a bright yellow dress, hoping it would catch his eye. The color was bright, according to the joy of Haldi—a festival she was looking forward to, but the expression that comes on Ajay’s face was anything but likeness.
“Yellow for Haldi? Isn’t that too obvious?” he replied, irritation lacing his voice. His remark left Kavya’s heart feeling bad, though it showed just how different they were. Ajay’s bold nature often makes Kavya hesitant to even speak her choices. Ajay's reply leave her hesitant to speak up again.
Kavya bit her lip, staring at the dress in her hands. She wanted to ask for his choice but shied away from asking. “It’s okay, I’ll... look for something else,” she murmured, making her way towards the trial rooms. She tried to forget his words and irritated behavior but couldn't do so.
The walls of the trial room appeared to testify to her nervousness. As she put the dress on, she saw how the color made her face look more radiant. She was fascinated by her reflection as she spun around in front of the mirror when a the dress's dori caught on a hanging hook, causing the fabric to tug as the blouse started to fall down.It got stuck very badly.
Panic engulfed her. Her heart raced as she couldn't understand what to do. She couldn't call anyone for help because her blouse was falling, revealing her back and shoulders,The thought of Ajay seeing her in such an embarrassing state terrified her. But the longer she struggled, the more it got down revealing more of her skin.
“Ajay!” she finally gathered enough courage to shout. The sound echoing in the small room can be heard clearly to anyone standing in boutique. “Can you help me, please?”
There was silence for a moment before she heard the footsteps of some get close to the trial room. “What’s wrong Kavya?” he asked, his voice a mix of desperation and concern.
“I... I’m stuck. My dori...” she stuttered, the shyness that usually enveloped her wrapping tightly around her words.
After a slight pause that felt like an eternity, Ajay finally opened the door. His eyes widened for a second before he turned his head away, trying to give her privacy.
Kavya said, " I don't know how it happened and there is no one for help and my blouse is falling, please help me," her eyes glistening with tear's".
“Uh, just hold still,” he instructed, he slowly and carefully untangled the dori of her dress from hook. His little touch at her exposed skin make kavya shiver.
Kavya was thankful for his assistance even though she could feel the flush creeping up her cheeks. She hid behind the thin fabric of the trial room, watching him closely.
“There you go,” he muttered, a hint of relief in his tone as he managed to free her.
“Thank you, It was great help",she whispered, the moment felt intimate. It was the first time she saw the quality of kindness behind his hard demeanor.
Although the city was bustling with traffic, when they exited the boutique, an uncomfortable quietness hung over them. Their shoulders almost touched as they moved side by side, yet an imperceptible wall appeared to keep them apart. Kavya struggled to talk since she was so nervous.
“Did you... like the dress?” she asked with hope to get a better answer.
“It’s okay, I guess,” Ajay replied, his casual tone. For a minute, she felt disappointed as she observed how his gaze strayed past her. However, she could see glimpses of appreciation beneath those outside layers of indifference.
With laughing and turmeric smearing the painting, the Haldi ritual started in a blaze of color. With music and conversation mingling with the aroma of the spices, friends and relatives spread the colorful paste on one another. As Kavya observed the happiness all around her, her heart skipped a beat. She prepared herself for the time when she would have to come forward and tie herself to Ajay in a way she hadn't understood they both secretly desired.
As the crowd cheered, she felt a push from her friends urging her to come forward. “Kavya, join us!” they called, and, with a hesitant heart, she stepped into the center where Ajay sat, basking in the joy of the moment.
For a moment, the barrier between them vanished as he captured her attention. She was prompted to smile shyly by his naughty grin, and as she applied the yellow paste to his cheek, a spark ignited. “You look like a yellow sunflower,” Kavya whispered, leaning closer with unexpected ease and confidence.
Ajay’s breath hitched, amusement dancing in his eyes. The moment transformed from one of mere obligation into a playful exchange—this was the essence of their budding relationship. Blurring the lines of awkwardness, laughter filled the space between them, weaving an intricate tapestry of emotions.
In the middle of the joyous bustle of the Haldi celebrations, Ajay found himself drawn to Kavya. Admiring her from a distance, he was astounded by how her laughing illuminated the atmosphere. He was surprised by how different she appeared throughout the ceremony—a confident air around her, in stark contrast to the quiet girl who had walked next to him earlier.
As the evening drew on, Ajay stood in the background, watching Kavya dance with her friends as the sun sank below the horizon, illuminating the sky with shades of orange and purple. He was mesmerized by the happiness on her face. He came to the realization that he preferred this carefree, self-assured version of her.
Attracted to her spirit, he moved forward to join the group of friends. Her laughing sounded like melody as she twirled, and Ajay couldn't resist embracing her tenderly and circling her in time with the dhol's rhythms. As they moved, the world around them dimmed, and they shared a brief moment that said more than words could.
Kavya was taken by surprise and experienced a wave of excitement. Their relationship was reckless and full of unsaid vows. She briefly let go of the layers of anxiety that held her in Ajay's arms—this was real—and she experienced a sensation of belonging for the first time.
The wedding decorations' dazzling lights danced like stars in the sky as night fell. Ajay and Kavya were sat in a peaceful area of the venue as the laughter subsided into the evening silence. The soft cadence of their developing relationship took place.
“Thank you for what you did today,” Kavya said softly, her heart fluttering nervously. “I had a great time.”
Ajay raised an eyebrow, concealing amusement. “I think that was mostly you. I just followed your lead.” His voice was teasing, but genuinely he was happy because of the new feeling and advancement in their bond.
