By the time the last riders were in sight, the front riders were almost within range. Severin took a deep breath and found himself praying for the first time in nearly a decade. Gul’s plan had seemed such a great idea in explanation, but now they were about to execute it Severin realised it was basically suicide. The seconds dragged by until the front hoof of the first horse landed on the marker line and then time tumbled out of control. What happened next took less than thirty seconds in total but in memory seemed far longer.
