Chapter 37

~ Song ~ Welcome To The Fire - Willyecho. ~ Nicholas stared at the door until he could no longer hear Fayes soft steps as she walked away. That witch had gotten to Faye last night and he had no idea, it infuriated him. Not only that but Faye also lied and if he hadn't reached for her and hurt her, she never would have told him.  He knew he needed to get to the bottom of everything but that was proving a difficult task, even for him.  Nicholas wanted to go right to the cells and kill the witch but he knew he couldn't. Cason was adamant to keep the witch alive for information but so far he hadn't given them anything useful. The only person the witch gave useful information to was Faye, it left an unsettling feeling in Nicholas.  He growled under his breath and stormed out of the small dining room, heading straight for the front door. He'd tend to Faye later, for now he needed to get to the church where Gerald had some answers for him. After all the time that had passed, Gerald had finally finished examining the dead vampire.  He grabbed his coat on the way out, the carriage was already waiting for him.  "The church." He said to the coachman before getting into the carriage.  His eyes stayed on the house as the carriage began to move. Faye would be in his room waiting for him but for some reason Nicholas had a strange feeling. He brushed it off and focused at the task at hand. The carriage rolled down the road, getting further away from the house until it was out of sight.  Snow had begun to fall, carpeting the ground with a thin layer of white. Winter was finally upon them, the harsh cold was here and it was here to stay. It was going to be a long winter. A winter no one saw coming. Unbeknownst to Nicholas, a storm was approaching. Just as quickly as the wheels of the carriage made marks in the snow, they were covered again.  Winter was a dangerous month. The snow could hide anything it pleased, the unforgiving cold could take out many at once. Storms were hidden until the moment they struck and though these things never affected Nicholas previously, they would now.   It didn't take long for the carriage to arrive at the church. Nicholas wasted no time and headed inside, spotting Gerald standing at the front lighting candles.  "You're here." Gerald spoke without turning to acknowledge Nicholas.  "I am." Nicholas spoke. "Let's get down to business."  Gerald turned and smiled at the impatient tone Nicholas held. "How is Faye?"  Nicholas's eyes narrowed. "Fine."  "Is that the truth?" Gerald pressed.  "The witch we captured last night took her to his personal realm while she slept. He injured her." Nicholas bit out, anger bubbling inside of him.  Gerald's eyebrows knitted together. "He did?" His eyes studied Nicholas, the thoughts running through his mind were galling, trying to get out but he had to keep them concealed for now.  "The body Gerald."  "Right." He turned and walking towards the back. "Follow me."  Nicholas glanced around the church before following Gerald into the back. The dead vampire soon came into sight lying on a table in the center of the room. Images of that day flashed through his mind, Fayes frightened and shocked expression lingering the longest.  "It was as you suspected. This vampire is drained of everything, his body is an empty shell." Gerald said, pushing his glasses further up the bridge of his nose. "When I examined all bodies at the crime scene it didn't take me long to sense the dark magic in the others, but this one had nothing."  Geralds eyes flicked to Nicholas's empty eyes that were trained on the dead body.  "Is it possible for the evil carried in dark magic to transfer to someone else." He asked, slowly turning to look at Gerald.  "It is." He spoke warily. "Do you by chance have an idea of how this body ended up this way?"  Nicholas took a deep breath. "I think it was Faye."  "Faye?" Geralds eyebrows rose.  "She said she went into some sort of trance and touched the body. She felt evil and darkness rush into her body from where her fingers touched the vampire, then her body was thrown away to the ground. Her fingertips were burnt." Nicholas reached into his coat, pulling out the small silver dagger with a black and purple handle.  Gerald was instantly intrigued by the dagger, it was clear to him it was witch craftsmanship and the same as the others at the crime scene but he could feel that one was different. He reached forward and took it from Nicholas, holding it up to the light flooding in the small window.  "This dagger fell from the vampires head after Faye got thrown back. It landed at her feet." Nicholas's eyes followed Geralds movements with an inexpressive face.  "It's the same as the witch." Gerald started, turning to Nicholas. "Drained of all its evil and darkness."  His jaw clenched at Geralds words. In all of his years working, he had never come across anything like this before. It was troubling but riveting all the same. It was a case he needed to solve and he was adamant on getting to the bottom of it.  "It was Faye?"  Gerald sighed. "I cannot say for sure without seeing her. If you brought her in I could examine her, however the odds are pointing at her."  Gerald handed the dagger back to the vexed vampire, watching the fire burn in his eyes.  "How is it possible?"  Gerald shrugged. "There could be multiple reasons. The dark magic could've been casted to do that, perhaps Faye was seen as a desirable shell. Was she wearing the necklace?" He nodded his head, his eyes narrowing on Gerald. "The necklace could've been the reason for it."  "That necklace is suppose to ward off darkness not draw it in." Nicholas snapped.  "Those types of magical instruments work in strange ways Nicholas." Gerald said, his words remained calm despite Nicholas's outburst. "Faye seems to draw out dark magic. For whatever reason, it follows her."  Those words weren't to Nicholas's liking. They were the truth he was trying to ignore. He knew Faye and trouble seemed to have a close relationship but since he has had her he has noticed all the strange occurrences that all point to the seemingly unaware human.  She was an anomaly from the very beginning, Nicholas could sense that. Hell many could. Something about her intrigued him to no end and he was still unable to figure out what. Whether it was her mysterious look or her captivatingly complex aura, she was special and Nicholas wasn't one to give up on a puzzle. Nor was he one to let go of something he felt significant enough to stay by his side but that didn't mean the universe agreed.  "I'm taking Faye to Sybil."  Geralds eyes widened slightly at the name Nicholas uttered.  "Are you sure that is a good idea Nicholas?" He asked cautiously.  "I'll kill her before she can do anything." Nicholas said. "She has more answers than anyone else. Besides, she owes me a few favours."  "If she takes a liking to Faye, there's no telling what she may do." Gerald warned.  He was aware Nicholas had dealt with Sybil before but never with another person present. Faye had already shown she allured evil, taking her to Sybil would be like taking a mouse to a lions den. However he could tell Nicholas was set on his decision and he knew Nicholas would honor his words. If Sybil did anything Nicholas may take as a threat, she'd be dead.  "It is a risk I must take. There's a revolution starting Gerald, no more skirting around. I need answers."  His tone was firm, his eyes blazing with an unyielding fire.  Gerald nodded his head. "I wish you all the best."  Nicholas nodded his head ar Gerald before showing himself out. He had a human to tend to now, a human who is always getting herself hurt. She was beginning to become a headache for Nicholas but she was also a challenge and he liked challenges. He left the church, his hawk like eyes scouring the surroundings before he jumped into the carriage and headed home.  The ride was calm and peaceful, a complete contrast to what Nicholas was about to experience. He noticed Clara's carriage right away, it was nothing peculiar. She had begun visiting far more often after she met Faye, taking an instant liking towards her. The two ladies were no doubt in his room training or chatting, neither of which bothered him.  While walking towards the door, it slammed open. His eyebrows rose, a bad feeling rushed through him. Clara burst through the door, staring straight at Nicholas with a worried expression. Alarm bells went off in his head at his usually composed cousin's reaction. His eyes narrowed, his strides getting longer and faster but that didn't stop Clara from running down the steps to him.  "God Nic! Where have you been?"  She asked frantically.  "Work. Why?" He asked, his eyes flicking up to the door. He was wondering where Faye was.  "It's...." Her eyes were wide with fret, her heart hammering so fast she could barely breathe.  This only made Nicholas more on edge. "Spit it out Clara." He snarled. "What is it?"  She took a few deep breaths, trying to compose herself but it failed.  "It's Faye."   "What about her?"  She stared into her cousins eyes, she didn't want to tell him. The storm of emotions were already brewing in his eyes as he waited for an answer. She had to tell him but the last thing she wanted was for Nicholas to loose it again and she feared he would.  "She's gone."  The words echoed through his mind, triggering a chain reaction of something inside of him. Something he had managed to keep locked away thus far. He had heard those words before and though they were of different context, it felt so similar.  He snarled and pushed past Clara, heading for the front door. Her heart felt as if it was being squeezed. She ran after him, out of breath from searching the house desperately for a sign of the human girl she had bonded with.  "Nic!"  "If she escaped she won't be far." He said, ignoring her as she tried to stop him. "I need to look for her."  She latched onto his arm, pulling him to a stop with all her strength. He turned to her, growling through clenched teeth.  "I don't think she escaped. There was blood, her blood." She said breathlessly. "I think she's been taken."  Those were the last words he wanted to hear, the words he was trying to avoid hearing. He stood frozen staring into Clara's eyes, there was worry for Faye and Nicholas mixed in them. He pushed past Clara and this time she didn't try to stop him, she knew she couldn't. She helplessly followed behind him, her heart breaking at the sight of the boy she saw many years ago.  It didn't take long for Nicholas to find where Faye was taken from. Rosemary and his mother were standing a small distance away, their eyes on Nicholas as he approached the small puddle of Fayes blood. At the sight of it, the memories began to flood in, overwhelming his mind with the anger he felt that day. His mother called out to him but her words were drowned out by all the noise in his mind.  The flashbacks were vivid, forcing him to feel everything he had suppressed from that day. Compelling him to remember the worst day of his life, the day he lost it all.
