Chapter 27

I wasn't sure how long I had been sitting on the floor but by the time I opened my eyes, the wind had calmed down and it seemed that hours had passed. I sighed and put everything back in the wooden chest and hid it behind the couch again.  I stood up and headed towards the bathroom but was stopped when I heard someone trying to open the bedroom door. My heart sped up momentarily as I stared at the door until it clicked open and Huxley came into sight. I visibly relaxed and let out a sigh, he had a tray of food and water with him.  "How did you open it?" I questioned, Nicholas definitely locked the door and I doubt he left the key in it.  "I have a key." He said, avoiding eye contact. "You do?" I pursed my lips and stared at his unmoving form.  "Nicholas has entrusted a key with only me. I assure you that no one else is able to get in the room."  I was slightly confused at his words until I remembered Huxley was a vampire, he no doubt heard my panic when he was opening the door. I nodded my head and he stepped inside, carrying the tray to the desk where he placed the plate and cup.  I stared out the open door, despite having an exit. I didn't make a move to escape, nor did I really think to. Even if I tried, there was another Lord down there that I hated much more than Nicholas. If I had to choose between being stuck with one of them, I'd stay with Nicholas.  As I stared out in the hallway, a form came into view. My eyes widened when they locked with the golden eyes of Nicholas's fiancee. She stopped her steps and stared at me, her eyes were a little wide too. Then a lock of my silver hair fell in my view and I realised why, she hadn't seen my hair before.  I panicked and turned away, passing Huxley who was about to leave. I heard rushed footsteps and a feminine voice call out.  "Wait."  She got to the open door but stopped when Huxley stood in front of her, his head dropped. "Master has informed me to not let anyone enter his room while he is gone."  "Why?" She questioned, staring at Huxleys form before looking at me.  Huxley shuffled on his feet before speaking. "For the human girls safety."  Something flashed through her eyes before she smiled softly. "Raise your head Huxley." I was slightly surprised that she knew his name and at her soft tone. He did as he was told. "I assure you I won't harm the girl."  "The Master ha-"  "I just wish to speak with her." She said. "That's alright with you right?" She turned her attention to me and I gulped.  Could I say no? It didn't feel like it so I nodded my head numbly, glancing at Huxley who had no expression as usual.  "I am not sure that is a good idea Lady Rosemary." He pressed.  "It won't take long." She said. "Trust me Huxley, you know I wouldn't hurt a fly."  He sighed. "The Master won't be pleased."  "He doesn't need to know." She gave him a cheeky smile.  Huxley nodded and left me behind with Nicholas's vampire. My heart was drumming against my chest, I didn't know if this would end well or not. So far she seemed harmless, but vampires were masters at manipulation. She closed the door and noticed my worried expression.  "It's just so my brother doesn't come." She smiled. "I think he took a liking to you."  I shivered at that thought, it wasn't good. "I.. Do you need something Lady?" I cringed at myself.  I wasn't sure how to address her.  "Some chatter with a woman would be nice." She walked over and took a seat on the couch.  "Nicholas's mother?" I questioned.  "She is out." I nodded my head. "Now, what is your name?"  I shuffled uncomfortably on my feet. "Faye."  "That's a lovely name. My name is Rosemary, though you can call me Rose if you'd like."  I nodded my head but didn't speak. I was uncomfortable and hungry, Huxley had brought me food but I can't eat it anymore. Why did Rosemary have to come here and when was Nicholas coming back? I glanced at the empty spot on the couch, Phantom was gone. Why did everyone leave me alone with her? "You can eat." She said, I looked up and stared into her eyes.  They were magically capturing. I had never seen golden eyes before and I had never seen many people with her coloured skin, the majority of people in Affaraon were milky skinned, some had warmer tones but not like her or her brothers. I nodded numbly and sat at Nicholas's desk, slowly eating my porridge while she stared outside.  "I have always liked Affaraon, it's a beautiful land." She smiled to herself as she watched a few birds fly past. "It's vastly different from my home land."  "Where are you from?" I questioned softly.  "Baltia." She answered. "Most people refer to it as the hot land and they're not wrong, it's very hot over there so it's nice to be in cooler weather for a change."  I nodded and continued to eat until I was finished, washing it down with my water. I stared at Rosemary while she kept her attention outside, she so far didn't seem like her obtuse brother but I didn't trust her. She sensed my stare and turned so out eyes locked, I should've dropped my gaze to seem as respectful as I could but I didn't.  "You hair is very beautiful, your eyes too."  A small panic erupted inside of me at her words. I had always tried to keep my odd features hidden but being with Nicholas, they were often exposed.  "Thank you." I mumbled quietly.  "You don't have to be afraid of me." She smiled softly. "Is Nicholas pretty harsh on you?"  I pursed my lips, what was her definition of harsh? I was sure ours were different.  "He can be."  "He seemed fond of you." She said. "I wonder if it's because of your unique look?"  "Master is not fond of me." I mumbled pulling my eyebrows together.   Perhaps he was fond of being mean to me. To Nicholas I was a toy, something in his possession he could play with and keep to himself. Nothing of that was fondness, just a vampires conceited and controlling behaviour.  She chuckled softly and went to speak but the door was slammed open. I flinched at the noise but instantly knew who it was, he was the only one who slammed through the door like that. He stepped inside and paused when he saw Rosemary, his eyes narrowing on hers before mine. I gulped.  "I thought I told you not to open the door for anyone Fairy." He growled slightly, stalking towards me.  "I didn't." I said. "The door was locked, how would I open it?" I quickly said.  His eyes narrowed but he knew I was right, he stopped beside me. Pulling a small bit of burnt paper from his pocket and sliding it into the desk draw, I furrowed my eyebrows at it.  "I'll punish Huxley later." He muttered.  "Please don't Nicholas. It was my fault, I pushed my way in because I was tired of all the males in the house." Rosemary said softly.  Nicholas remained standing beside his chair I sat in, staring at Rosemary. "Have you had your fill of female company then?"  "It sounds like you're kicking me out, so I guess it will have to do." She said but didn't move. "Though I wouldn't mind speaking with Faye more during my stay." She smiled at me.  I looked up at Nicholas unsure of what to say, he stared at me for a moment but didn't say anything either he just simply grunted. Rosemary didn't move from the couch, she remained seated and studied Nicholas and I. I was nervous under her gaze but Nicholas's presence calmed me down slightly, thought I wasn't sure if it should've.  Rosemary was Nicholas's fiance, if she wanted to hurt me then he wouldn't really stop her right? She's the woman he is going to marry so they must be somewhat close, though they don't entirely seem to be. Despite his softer tone and less threatening demeanor, he doesn't treat her like his fiance very much.  "Clara is coming." He suddenly spoke, staring at me.  "She is?" My eyes must've lightened up at that news as he smirked slightly while he studied me. "Yes. You need more training before we leave." He stepped away and sat on the end of his bed, his eyes trained on me, sometimes flicking towards Rosemary.  "Leave?" I furrowed my eyebrows.  He nodded. "In just over a week we will be leaving for a few days."  "Where?" "You don't need to know where Fairy, just that we are going." He said.  I pursed my lips at his answer. "Why?"  He stared at me, his smirk was gone and he looked serious. He didn't reply just continued to stare at me, his eyes flicking to Rosemary a few times. Then it clicked in my mind, he said he was going to find someone who could give us answers, we must be going to see them then right? I thought he wouldn't mind letting his fiance know but I was actually relieved that he didn't.  "I see." I said softly, averting my gaze and looking at the floor.  I wondered who we were going to see, who could know what was happening? Would it be another vampire or possibly a witch? But Nicholas hated witches so why would he go to one to seek answers? The whole idea caused nerves to stir in me, something didn't feel right.  "Well I guess I will leave you two to it." Rosemary said, finally standing from the couch. "Don't be too harsh on Faye Nicholas, she's a nice young girl."  I was slightly taken back by her words but didn't trust them. Nicholas stared at her before looking at me with his signature smirk.  "Harsh? Me? No way." He said. "I'm lovely isn't that right Faye." I was suppose to nod and agree with him but my body had other plans, I shook my head softly but Nicholas didn't seem to mind. He continued to smirk, his eyes narrowed playfully. Rosemary watched Nicholas with heavy eyes, I could see emotion and possibly conflict swirling around the pools of gold. She gave Nicholas a soft smile and nod before walking out the bedroom.  I was confused by their relationship. Lord Arthur said she was his fiance and Nicholas didn't disagree but I had seen married or soon to be married couples before and they didn't act like them. Nicholas didn't seem to hate her and he held a friendlier tone when speaking to her but he still wasn't exactly welcoming.  They didn't seem close and when I thought about it, Clara was the only one I had seen that was close with Nicholas. They seemed to understand each other despite their stark differences and it always seemed Clara knew every little secret Nicholas had, or at least majority of them.  "Aren't you lonely?" I suddenly asked, referring to lack of people he held close. Nicholas looked slightly taken back by my question but he composed himself quickly. His eyes locked with mine in a calm gaze.  "Aren't you?" He countered.  I thought about the question, images of my parents and gran flashing through my mind. It seemed I was cursed since I was young, everyone I loved died and I was left alone without anyone to depend on. I wasn't sure I wanted to become close with people in fear they would die too.  I slowly shook my head. "I can't lose people if I am not close with them."  A certain emotion radiated from Nicholas's eyes, he seemed to understand my words and connect with them but as quickly as that came, a mask covered his face and all emotion was gone.  "You can still feel lonely." He said, narrowing his eyes at me.  I had avoided the direct answer of his question. Was I lonely? I wasn't entirely sure. A part of me ached for family and connection but I had lost that. I think a part of me was lonely, it was a scary world we lived in and going through it with no one by your side was glum but many had to, as did I. Though being stuck with Nicholas, I guess in a physical sense I wasn't entirely alone anymore.  "I am not dependant on others for my survival, if I was then what would the point of surviving be?"  I wondered if that was a lie.  A small grin grew on his lips, it was hollow but understanding flashed through his eyes.  "I'm starting to think our minds work the same Fairy."  "I don't kill people Master." I pointed out.  "Touche."
