~ Song ~ A Storm Is Coming - Tommee Profitt ~ My body froze at her words. I had no idea how I was suppose to respond to her so I didn't. Our eyes remained locked in an unrelenting stare. Neither of us moved an inch, stalled by the weight of her words. I let out an unsteady breath, my hands shaking slightly at my side. Before I could even blink Sybil had rose from her chair and shot towards me. I flinched back but stayed where I was standing. A low growl beside me made me flinch again and whip my head to the side to see Nicholas. "That was fairly quick Nicholas." Sybil said with a taunting smirk. "You've got a good body guard here, though a bit slow on the uptake." She gave me a glance. "What were you trying to do Sybil." Nicholas growled. "Oh nothing." She smiled. Her movements were so quick I was barely able to notice them, but Nicholas did. Her hand had shot out to my neck but before it could reach, Nicholas had her forearm in a tight grip. I glanced down at her hand to see the ruby pendant in her fingers, laying on her palm. "This is a very beautiful necklace." Sybil said, shooting Nicholas a look. "Very protective." She moved the pendant so she was holding onto the chain, the pendant not touching her skin. I blinked a few times wondering if my eyes were deceiving me when I noticed a small burn like mark where the pendant had been laying. I furrowed my eyebrows, her words echoing in my mind. "Protective?" Her eyes ran over my face as she studied me. "Oh he hasn't told you?" "Told me what?" I asked, glancing between the two. Nicholas kept his eyes on Sybil, his lips locked in a firm line. "This necklace, it has protective magic infused in it. It repels evil and dark magic to an extent." Nicholas released her arm, snatching the necklace back and letting it drop on my chest. My eyes had widened slightly at the news. Nicholas didn't deny nor confirm, he remained quiet with a light scowl etched on his face. I wondered if he made me wear it on purpose, so it would protect me? Those thoughts were hard to believe though and they troubled my mind. I could never work his intentions out. "Not to mention that mark.." Her eyes flicked to my neck, the smirk on her lips deepening.  "Sybil." Nicholas growled lowly, I could have sworn I felt the house shake. "I am warning you."  "Relax Nicholas." She said, taking a step backwards. "Your secret is safe with me."  I was certain my eyebrows were permanently furrowed now, the confusion was written all over my face but no one was even humouring me with answers. I glanced at Sybil but she turned away and walked to her bookshelf.  "Master Nico?" I turned to him, my eyes searching his impassive expression. He answered without even sparing me a glance. "I did tell you she had an acquired sense of humour."  I took that as an answer to my unasked questions. I frowned, turning away from him, my hand gripping onto the fabric of my dress. Sybil turned back around.  "Now would you like me to take a look at that wound of hers?" Sybil asked, raising her brow at Nicholas. "I noticed it the moment you arrived."  Nicholas hesitated before nodding his head. "No funny business." He growled.  Sybil smirked. "Of course not." Her eyes flicked to me. "Come little mouse."  My legs wavered as I made my way to Sybil. I sat on the bench she was motioning to. I glanced at Nicholas who was already staring at me but the moment our eyes met he looked away. I frowned as he turned and walked towards the window, staring outside with his arms crossed over his chest. "Could you lift your dress please." I turned back to Sybil and did as she asked. Her eyes narrowed as she examined the wound. I kept my eyes locked on the wall past Sybil, not wanting to see those disgusting black lines again. I flinched when she placed her fingers on it, making me snap my eyes to hers.  I observed as her eyes slowly began to turn white again, sending shivers down my body. I wanted to move away but I was frozen in place. There was a small amount of heat emitting from my wound where her fingers lay, making me gasp.  Nicholas turned at the sound of my gasp, striding forward and grabbing Sybils arm. Her eyes changed back and she glared at Nicholas.  "What were you doing?" he asked.  "I was examining her." She said rolling her eyes.  Nicholas's eyes flicked to my wound before they found my eyes. He released Sybil's arm and turned to her. "Explain."  Sybil sighed. "Faye will be fine."  "But the lines?" I said with a shaky voice, it didn't look fine.  "Those black lines are a result of your soul fighting the dark magic." She said, her eyes boring into mine. "You're purifying yourself."  My eyes widened, my head spinning at her words. I wasn't the only one confused, Nicholas's brows had creased together as he stared at Sybil.  "How is that possible?" He asked.  Sybil smirked. "If you haven't already noticed Nicholas, it seems anything is possible when it comes to your little pet."  I stayed quiet, my voice being crushed by the weight behind her words. Sybil was so cryptic but it almost seemed as if something deep inside of me understood what she meant. I could barely fathom what had happened in the short amount of time with Sybil, some questions were answered but I only had more now.  Perhaps it was impossible for me to get answers without gaining more questions.  "She doesn't need any treatment?" Nicholas asked.  Sybil shook her head. "Your blood helped keep the dark magic from spreading so she was able to begin purifying herself. It appears she doesn't need anymore aid towards it, with time it'll disappear from her body as if it was never there." I glanced up at Nicholas. I couldn't tell what he was thinking though that wasn't entirely out of the ordinary.  "Go get Achlys ready Faye. We will leave shortly."  I nodded my head numbly, climbing off the bench and walking outside. My steps faltered as I stared into the shadowed forest, chills climbing up my arm. Achlys turned her head to me as if she sensed my fear, I had heard horses could.  I was about to walk to Achlys when I heard Sybil speak. I was told never to eavesdrop, that if it was a conversation had without you then it was a conversation you didn't need to hear but surely there was an exemption when the topic was myself.  "She is an interesting one Nicholas." She said, her silky voice laced with venom. "Wherever did you find her?"  "Sybil I am not interested in these games of yours." Nicholas said, his voice rough.  "No. You never are. You are truly lacking a sense of humour." I could imagine Nicholas unimpressed expression. "Do not worry so much about the girl Nicholas. She is an important piece of the puzzle." "You are the second witch to say that." He said coarsely, speaking through gritted teeth.  "Oh?" I could hear the humour in her voice, it made me want to walk inside. "I wonder if that is because we are always right?"  I was doing my best to control my breathing, to keep my heart rate down. I knew Nicholas would be able to hear it if it got too loud and that was the last thing I wanted to happen.  "You witches are nothing but tricksters." He said.  "Perhaps." She hummed. "We do have a sense of humour, unlike some."  There was a pause of silence that was begging me see what was happening but I forced my body to still. My heart started thundering when I heard Nicholas's shoes clank against the floor as he started walking towards the door.  "I am curious, why are you going to such lengths to ensure her safety?" Sybil suddenly asked, her words instantly halting Nicholas's steps and my breath. "You loathe her kind after all."  The silence that followed was suffocating, I wanted badly to see his expression, to attempt to read the story behind his eyes but I couldn't. The next few minutes were agonising and taught me how impatient I could be.  "I do not answer to you Sybil." Nicholas finally spoke.  "Do you even have an answer?" She asked.  "Goodbye Sybil."  I sucked in a breath and quickly darted towards Achlys, tripping over my feet a few times. I leaned against the tree and let out a shaky breath, glancing over my shoulder I saw Nicholas step out the door.  I untied Achlys who was giving me a deprecating look. "Don't tell me you haven't eavesdropped before." I huffed out quietly.  I turned around when I felt Nicholas approaching, my eyes finding his red orbs. He gave me a once over as he reached for the reins in my hands. I stood quietly, watching as he put the reins over her head and checked the saddle.  "Is something the matter?" He asked, sensing my unwavering stare.  "No." I murmured, looking at the ground.  "Come here."  I stepped forward, sucking in a breath when his hands went to my waist, lifting me onto Achlys. I stared at the cabin, seeing Sybil standing in the window. Her yellow eyes found mine and she smirked.  Nicholas climbed on and we began moving, making me break eye contact with Sybil. I sighed softly, threading my fingers through Achlys' mane.   I could see the sun descending through the trees. Night was approaching and I didn't fancy staying in this forest for it. I couldn't handle the uncomfortable silence we were in so I chewed on my bottom lip before I spoke. "Why were her eyes white?" I asked timidly, wincing as I waited for his reply. "Because she was tapping into dark magic." My eyes widened slightly. "I thought their eyes would've gone black." I murmured. I glanced over my shoulder when I heard a soft chuckle escape Nicholas's lips. He kept his eyes forward, ignoring my stare. "Many do." He said. "I've seen witches with pitch black eyes before, that's usually when the dark magic has completely consumed them." "Consumed them?" He nodded. "Not all witches can practice dark magic, you need to be born with the ability. However dark magic is tricky, many who try to use it get swept up in the power and evil." I pursed my lips. "It consumes them slowly. Only few witches strong enough are able to fight for control." I faced forward, watching as a bird flew out from its nest in a tree to lead us away from its eggs. "Is Sybil one of those witches?" I asked. "She knows how to manage it but she too is susceptible to being consumed." He said. "There was one witch in the first ten who was able to perfectly sync with light and dark magic, something like that is practically impossible now." "Oh." Was all I could say. It intrigued me that a witch could harness both light and dark when they were opposing elements. That witch must have been a force to reckon with. "All the first ten witches died right?" I asked. "Yes, however only a few of their bodies were found." "If they were immortal.." I started, chewing my bottom lip. "How did they die?" "That's a good question Fairy." He said. "I'm certain the ten prophecies will shed light on how they died or rather what killed them." It frightened me to think there could be something out there strong enough to kill immortal beings placed on earth by God. Nicholas was strong, that much was obvious but if there was a creature ten immortal beings couldn't defeat, I doubted Nicholas could. We slipped into a comfortable silence, I let the thoughts in my head wander as the wind tangled through my hair. I tried my best to ignore how our bodies would brush together from Achlys movements. Surprisingly I managed to but I was relieved when we finally made it back to the inn. After Nicholas untacked Achlys and put her in her stall we walked inside. The inn owner was nowhere to be seen as we made our way up the stairs to our room. "Get cleaned up." Nicholas said as we entered the room. "I'll be back." I stared at him before nodding slowly, watching as he turned and walked out, closing the door behind him. My curiosity got the best of me and once I knew he would be down the stairs, I reached for the door handle, surprised to see it unlocked. Even if I tried to run again, I wouldn't make it far. Nicholas knew that all too well. I sighed and turned around, a painting on the wall catching my eye. As if my body was compelled, I stepped forward until I stood directly in front of the painting, my eyes locked on the small girl standing by a lake. I whined out in pain as a sudden bolt shot through my body, my head feeling as if I ran into a hundred trees. I stumbled backwards, my eyes remaining locked on the painting. My breathing had become shallow, my heart thundering desperately in my chest. Panic flooded me. I couldn't breathe, I could hardly remain upright. Images flashed through my mind so fast I could barely make out what they were, but I did. I heard a distant thud but my eyes wouldn't work. I couldn't force them away from the painting, the recognition in my mind making my head spin. I felt myself drop to my knees as the images assaulting my mind became too much. "Fairy?" I gasped for air as my body was roughly pulled to the side, my eyes being forced to look away and into Nicholas's red orbs. "What happened?" I stayed quiet for a moment, regaining my breath and trying to calm my heart. "I..." My voice cracked, coming out as a weak whisper. I raised my arm, a shaky finger pointed towards the painting. "I think that's me."
