Chapter 12

I stared at Nicholas while he spoke, it was weird to admit that his presence was stopping the bone chilling feeling I had all night after that dream.  "Humans can also strengthen up their minds to have some sort of protection against witches and vampires." I nodded my head. "It's not the same as how supernatural creatures enter their minds and control the doors but humans can still form barriers."  "Can I?" I asked softly.  "You can. It will take some time but strengthening your mind will help with magic seeping in and causing abnormal occurrences." Nicholas ran his hand through his hair, absently staring out the window into the darkness.  "Is that what caused me to cough up water Master?" I played with the corner of one of the pages of the empty book.  "It's a possibility but strengthening your mind will help nonetheless." Slowly, his eyes skimmed across the room until they locked with mine. "You are my pet and having you be affected by lingering magic or witches is troublesome."  "I understand Master." Maybe strengthening my mind would help protect me against Nicholas.  "Some witches can kill by slowly and painfully destroying the targets mind until they are nothing but an empty body." A shiver went down my spine, that sounds like a horrible way to die.  "Can you be affected by all this too?" I asked.  "I can." I sensed a but coming. "But-" There it is. "-I can turn off a switch in my mind, it makes me unable to be killed or hurt too severely by a witches mind magic."  I watched as Nicholas cracked his neck, he looked a bit uncomfortable having been sitting on the couch for the many hours we had been talking tonight. His red locks fell to the side messily, framing his disruptively perfect face and glowing red eyes. I had never noticed how long his eyelashes were or the small scar that ran along his temple.  "Do you turn the switch off regularly then?" I suddenly asked, clearing my throat and diverting my gaze to my fingers.  "I don't." His answer was curt and I gathered he was hesitating in telling me why, but I wasn't going to allow him to leave another thing unexplained.  "Why not?"  I looked back up at him, to see him studying me stilly. His face was void of expression but I swear I saw something in his eyes. I had thought earlier that maybe he was telling me all this to distract me from my fears but maybe he was the one who was finding solace in speaking to me all night.  "Are you sure you want to know Fairy?" A small smirk played on his lips but it was an empty one with no real humour behind it.  I furrowed my brows at the name he called me but I chose to ignore it.  "I want to know Master." I answered, shifting positions so my side was resting against the sofa so I could stare up at Nicholas easier.  "To be able to block that kind of magic, you need to completely wipe your mind of anything that can be attacked. If I turn the switch off, any rational part of me disappears and I turn into a monster." He was already a monster though. "I'll kill anyone in my sight, completely blinded by darkness. It is almost impossible to switch it back on when my true nature loves that dark hollowness. So I can't do that."  "Have you ever switched it off before?" The question left my mouth as barely a whisper.  I silently watched his eyes swirl with what appeared to be deep sorrow. He was remembering something that seemed to hurt him, maybe he did have feelings after all? "I have."  His eyes hadn't left mine for even a second, I was completely trapped in the emotion swirling behind his red orbs. I knew not to press the matter further so I kept my mouth shut and just stared into his eyes, as if we were communicating that way. He was still undoubtedly an evil and frightening man but I think I found comfort in seeing there were emotions behind him, just as he had told me before.   I wasn't sure when I had started feeling so tired, but my eyes eventually drifted closed with Nicholas's red eyes existing in my mind like a light that kept the nightmares away. It was strange how one minute his eyes frightened me to the core but the next seemed to keep my mind at ease from the darkness that was now consuming me.  My eyes slowly opened, taking in the light that shone through the room. It was finally morning. I furrowed my brows slightly when I noticed I was lying on the couch with the blanket laying on top of me. I swear I hadn't moved from the floor last night. I stretched my arms out and yawned.  "Morning Fairy." I jumped slightly at the voice behind me. I turned to see Nicholas sitting at his desk writing something with his signature smirk on his face.  "My names Faye." I mumbled.  "Oh it is? I didn't know."  I got up and folded my blanket before putting it on the end of the couch. My eyes unconsciously found the spot on the wood where my name was last night. A shiver ran down my spine when I thought about what happened last night.  "I'm going to teach you how to strengthen your mind today." Nicholas said while he studied my reaction. I pulled my eyes from the floor and locked with his.  "How?" I asked softly.  "How do you think? Go wash up and you'll see for yourself." I gave Nicholas a wary look before walking into the bathroom.  I had a bad feeling about this mind strengthening. I understood it was something that I needed to do to help but I didn't like the spark in Nicholas's eyes.  I had a quick bath, I wanted to stay in the warm water all day if it meant escaping whatever was about to happen but I couldn't. The water made me think of the lake and although I wasn't afraid of the bath, I was afraid of going back to that lake. I got changed into one of the dreary slave dresses and tied my hair into a high ponytail with a black ribbon that went with the dress.  I walked out into Nicholas's bedroom. My eyes widened slightly when they landed on a woman sitting on the couch talking to Nicholas.  His eyes snapped to my rigid body and he smirked. "Come Fairy, she won't bite." That didn't ease my mind at all.  The goddess like woman turned to me, her eyes were green and her hair was blonde. She had pale skin that looked as if it glowed and sparkled. She gave me a small grin showing off her pearly white teeth and sharp fangs. I was taken back when I noticed her fangs. I didn't think Nicholas would have a human here but her eyes were green, I thought vampires only have red eyes? She chuckled as she read my expression. "Have you not told her anything about our kind Nic?"  "I've told her what she needs to know." He shrugged nonchalantly.  "Come sit Faye." The woman ushered to the spot beside her on the couch.  I reluctantly walked over to them and sat as far away from her as I could. My eyes jumped between Nicholas and the woman, I was alert and waiting for something bad to happen.  "She does speak." Nicholas said watching me. "Don't you Fairy?"  I slowly nodded my head. "Yes Master."  "My name is Clara, I'm Nics older cousin." She smiled. His cousin? "I can see you're curious about my eyes."  "I am." I said softly.  "If Nic was a decent person, he would've told you that not all vampires have red eyes."  "But I've only ever seen vampires with red eyes." I furrowed my brows, I've never seen Nicholas with anything but red eyes.  "Certain vampires have normal eye colours, like mine they're green but in the blink of an eye I can-" Suddenly her eyes turned a bright red. Her eyes weren't as bright as Nicholas's but they were very close. "-Change them. Low level vampires can't do this. They just have very dull almost brown red eyes."  "Can you do that Master?" I asked.  He smirked and shook his head. "The first generation of vampires were born with the brightest red eyes, the first few generations following kept the bright eyes. When the generations spread out more, vampires started adapting and were born with coloured eyes like Clara here."  "Im older than Nic but my family branch had spread out more than his, which made me a generation behind him. My mother was the first to be born with green eyes in our family line."  I nodded my head, taking in the new information. Now I was even more afraid of vampires, some can really blend in with humans and I never had a clue. I doubt many humans know this either.  "Anyway, the reason Clara is here is to help strengthen your mind. Clara has the ability to mind control."  My eyes widened and I unconsciously pushed myself against the arm of the couch to distance myself from the mind controlling vampire beside me. I knew something bad was going to happen. I didn't want Clara in my mind controlling me, I've already got Nicholas digging into my past and doing his own little investigation on me.  "You're obviously too hard on her Nic, she's so timid." Clara smirked.  Nicholas rolled his eyes. "I treat her as she deserves to be treated."  Clara gave him a hard stare before turning back to me. "You are an evil man Nic." I unconsciously nodded in agreement.  "I saw that Fairy." Nicholas said, raising his brow at me. My eyes widened and I looked down. I wasn't going to apologise for agreeing with a statement that was true. Clara chuckled and placed her hand on my shoulder, causing me to flinch.  "Don't worry Faye, I'm nothing like the brute over there." She gave me a soft smile that made me want to believe her but I couldn't. "Nic informed me a little of your situation. You want to strengthen your mind against supernaturals is that correct?"  I glanced at Nicholas, he gave me a small nod so I mirrored it. "Yes, that's correct."  "Okay the easiest way to strengthen your mind is to expose it to mind type magic, so that's what we will be doing today. It won't hurt."  I slowly nodded my head, so she is going to go into my mind? "Clara's magic doesn't quite work how your thinking Fairy." Nicholas said, he stood up and moved from his desk to sit at the end of his bed so he could face us. "She can't enter your mind so to speak, she just connects to the part of the mind that sends signals from the brain to the limbs we are moving."  "So she can't read my thoughts?" I asked, furrowed eyebrows creasing my face.  "I've told you Fairy, no one can do that." Clara looked up at Nicholas with a puzzled expression. He gave her a hard stare and she returned her eyes to mine.  Clara closed her eyes and took a deep breath, I stared at her wondering what she was doing. Suddenly I felt a strange feeling in my head, it was like an extremely dull headache but it was still noticeable. Clara's flawless face furrowed slightly.  "Are you sure you haven't had any practice creating mind barriers before?" She asked.  "I'm sure."  "Strange. It's almost as if there is a barrier."  I glanced up at Nicholas who was studying us intently, his expression was flat but he had a empty look in his eyes which told me he was thinking about something. I had began to understand his eyes and expressions better.  I felt a sudden ache in my mind and then chills rushed down my body. I squirmed in my spot until the ache and chills passed. Suddenly my finger moved. I watched with amazement and somewhat fear as my fingers started balling in and out of a fist but I had zero control over it.   "You said it wouldn't hurt." I mumbled staring into Clara's now opened eyes.  "It shouldn't of but something was trying to stop me from connecting." She said, glancing at Nicholas.  "Did you see a barrier?" Nicholas asked.  Clara stared at me for a moment before turning back to Nicholas. I felt like a lab rat and I didn't like it.  "No, not quite. There was no clear wall but something didn't want me in there." She sighed. "Anyway I'm in now. Can you feel my connection now?"  I couldn't feel the dull ache anymore. My fingers were just moving without me wanting them to, It felt like they weren't my fingers. I shook my head slowly, my eyes fixated on my fingers.  "There's a few ways to build up a resistance against mind control. The first is you try to gain control over your fingers but it takes a while and could cause some complications. Second way is to recognize the connection and practice seeing it in your mind, then try to visualize and build a barrier so it's harder for her to connect or so she can't connect at all. Understand Fairy?"  Something about this felt familiar. I wasn't sure what, but I suddenly got lost in Nicholas's words. They were echoing in my mind like I had heard them before. Where would I have heard words similar to those ones though? I've never been around supernatural creatures before and never been taught how to strengthen my mind like this. I was puzzled as to why strange things I had never experienced before were giving me a strange feeling of familiarity.   "Fairy?" I snapped out of it and stared at Nicholas.  "Yes Master. I understand."  My quaint world had suddenly turned into a mystery when Nicholas walked into it. Life had always been a puzzle but it was one I thought I finished. Now that I was with Nicholas I was starting to think I had only finished one portion of that puzzle and there were many more missing pieces I needed to find.
