Tangled Hearts – Part 2: Crossed Hearts The semester was in full swing, and campus life felt more chaotic than ever. Jane had chosen her heart—Angelo—but the aftermath of her decision still lingered like a shadow. Felix, though respectful, hadn’t vanished. He was still around, always cheerful, always offering help in class, and sometimes, annoyingly, catching Jane’s attention despite her efforts to stay distant. Angelo noticed immediately. “You’ve been looking at him,” Angelo said one afternoon as they walked back from the library. The sunlight filtered through the tall trees, but it did nothing to soften the intensity in his eyes. Jane’s stomach twisted. “I… I wasn’t. I mean, it’s not like that.” “You don’t have to lie to me, Jane,” he snapped gently. “I know you. You always think before you act… but your eyes tell me more than words.” Jane bit her lip, frustrated. She loved Angelo, but Felix’s presence—his energy, his charm—sometimes made her heart flutter in ways she didn’t expect. And Angelo’s protectiveness, while comforting, sometimes felt suffocating. --- That weekend, the college hosted its annual cultural fair. Jane was helping set up decorations with her club, Angelo at her side, while Felix was assigned to another booth nearby. Despite the distance, Felix managed to pop up at every turn, helping, joking, teasing—always too close for comfort. “Careful,” Angelo muttered, leaning close to Jane as Felix laughed at something she said. “You know he’s not going anywhere.” “I know,” Jane said quietly, though her heart raced. “And neither are you.” Angelo frowned, gripping her hand a little tighter. He didn’t like sharing—even if it was just a friendly presence. Later that evening, during the fair, a misunderstanding sent everything into chaos. Jane spotted Felix helping another girl with decorations—laughing, leaning close, their heads almost touching. Her stomach dropped, and before she could think, she blurted out, “I can’t do this!” Angelo turned to her, eyes wide. “Jane… what do you mean?” “I… I can’t just… I can’t ignore how this feels,” she admitted, tears brimming. “Seeing him… I feel confused. I love you, Angelo, but I don’t want to hurt anyone… even myself.” Angelo’s jaw clenched, but he didn’t speak immediately. He wanted to be angry, wanted to yell, but seeing her like this—the vulnerability in her eyes—made his heart ache. “I’m not going anywhere,” he said finally, voice low and steady. “But we need to be honest, Jane. With each other… with ourselves. If you’re feeling confused, we’ll figure it out together. No games. No lies.” Jane nodded, wiping her tears. “I… I need to sort out my feelings, but I don’t want to lose you.” --- Meanwhile, Felix was wrestling with his own emotions. He had admired Jane from afar, hoping for a chance, but now he realized that he might never have her the way he wanted. Still, he couldn’t walk away entirely—not yet. That week, he approached her quietly after class. “Jane, I just want you to be happy. If that’s with Angelo… then I’ll accept it. I just… don’t want regrets. I hope we can still be friends.” Jane felt a pang of guilt. Felix was kind, sincere, and he deserved someone who could love him fully. “I… I hope so too, Felix. You’re important to me. Just… give me some time, okay?” Felix smiled, though it didn’t reach his eyes completely. “Time… understood.” --- As midterms approached, Angelo and Jane’s bond grew stronger. They studied together late into the night, sharing notes, snacks, and laughter. Every touch—every shared glance—was charged with unspoken feelings. But the tension of Felix’s presence lingered, a constant reminder that love is never simple. One evening, as they walked home after a library session, Angelo stopped abruptly. “Jane… I can’t do this half-heartedly. I need to know you’re all in. That we’re all in—me and you, together, no doubts.” Jane looked into his eyes, seeing the raw emotion he usually tried to hide. “Angelo… I’m all in. I love you. I’ve always loved you. Felix… he made me realize what I already knew: my heart belongs to you.” A smile broke across Angelo’s face, relief washing over him. He pulled her into a tight embrace, letting go of all the frustration, jealousy, and fear he had carried for months. But the story wasn’t over. College life had its way of throwing curveballs, and the presence of Felix—though now friendly—was a constant reminder that love was messy, unpredictable, and sometimes painfully complicated. --- The semester ended with a quiet moment under the campus’s old oak tree, where Jane and Angelo first confessed their feelings. Felix passed by, giving them a small, respectful wave. No words were needed; respect and friendship had replaced the longing that had once been there. Jane rested her head on Angelo’s shoulder, feeling a warmth she hadn’t felt before. “We’ll have challenges, won’t we?” she whispered. Angelo kissed her forehead. “We’ll face them together. And no matter what… our hearts are tangled, but they belong to each other.” Under the fading sunset, the two of them sat silently, hands entwined, hearts steady for the first time in months. The chaos of college life, the misunderstandings, and the heartbreak had all led them here—to each other. And though love could be complicated, messy, and full of twists, Jane realized that some hearts are worth the struggle. Some loves are meant to be fought for. ---
