TANGLED HEARTS

Tangled Hearts Jane adjusted her backpack nervously as she entered the campus grounds. The familiar scent of freshly cut grass and the chatter of students brought back memories of her childhood friendship with Angelo. She had always counted on him—her confidant, protector, and someone she could laugh with endlessly. As she walked, her eyes landed on Angelo leaning casually against a tree, scrolling through his phone. His messy hair caught the sunlight, and he looked effortlessly handsome, as always. She smiled, a little flutter in her chest, and waved. “Hey, stranger,” Angelo called, striding over. His grin was familiar, comfortable. “Hi, Angelo,” Jane replied. “You look… exactly the same.” “You haven’t changed either,” he teased. “Still making that nervous little face whenever you walk into a crowd of strangers?” Jane rolled her eyes, but her heart raced. Angelo had always had a way of seeing right through her, even without trying. Their banter was effortless, and for a moment, she felt safe from the chaos of college life. But then Felix appeared. He was leaning against a nearby bench, book in hand, with a grin that made Jane’s stomach twist. She had noticed him in class earlier—the new student who somehow managed to be both confident and approachable. When their eyes met, he waved enthusiastically. “Hey, you’re Jane, right? I’m Felix. I think we have that Literature class together.” Jane nodded, flustered by his forwardness. There was something about him—his energy, the way he smiled—that made her pulse quicken. She quickly introduced herself properly, trying to keep her composure. Angelo, however, didn’t look pleased. His jaw tightened slightly, though he managed to mask it with a sarcastic smirk. “So this is the new competition, huh?” he muttered under his breath. Jane shot him a warning glance. “Angelo, don’t start.” But she couldn’t ignore the small pang of jealousy that suddenly knotted in her stomach. --- Over the next few weeks, Jane found herself caught between two worlds. Felix was charming, funny, and attentive in ways that made her feel special. He would text her just to ask about her day, bring her coffee after a long lecture, and tease her relentlessly—but gently—enough to make her laugh until her cheeks hurt. Angelo, meanwhile, remained a constant presence. He was her study partner, her shoulder to lean on, the one who remembered every little thing about her—from her favorite snacks to her childhood dreams. Yet, every time Felix was around, Angelo seemed distant, almost… tense. Jane noticed, of course. She caught him staring at Felix with a glare he tried to hide, and she heard the tightness in his voice when he offered to help with her assignments. Something was changing, and she couldn’t quite figure out what it was. One rainy afternoon, Jane stayed late in the library, trying to finish an essay. Felix had already left, promising to meet her for coffee tomorrow, leaving her alone with the silence and the sound of rain against the windows. “Need some help?” a familiar voice said. Jane looked up. Angelo was standing there, dripping wet but looking far too composed. Her heart skipped a beat. “You came all the way here… in this weather?” she asked, concerned. “I couldn’t leave you drowning in deadlines,” he said simply, sitting down beside her. There was a pause, heavy with unspoken words. “Angelo…” Jane began, unsure how to voice the feeling she’d been avoiding. “I… I don’t know what to do. Felix… he… he’s amazing. He makes me feel… new things.” Angelo’s hand hovered near hers but didn’t touch. His eyes softened, a rare vulnerability breaking through his usual confident exterior. “Jane, you’ve always been amazing. And I’ve—” He stopped, swallowed, and then forced a laugh. “Never mind. It’s stupid.” “No, tell me,” Jane urged, her heart clenching. “I’ve loved you since we were kids,” he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. “I tried to hide it because I didn’t want to ruin what we had, but… seeing you with him hurts.” Jane felt tears prick her eyes. She had suspected, yes, but hearing it made her world tilt. She didn’t want to hurt anyone, yet the truth was now unavoidable. --- The next day, Felix noticed something different. Jane was quieter than usual, her laughter slightly forced, and there was a tension in her eyes that hadn’t been there before. “Hey, are you okay?” he asked, concerned. “I… I need some time to think,” Jane admitted. “It’s complicated.” Felix nodded, though the disappointment in his eyes was clear. He had fallen hard and fast, but he realized some things weren’t meant to be rushed. --- It all came to a head during the campus festival. Jane, Angelo, and Felix ended up together by chance at a booth. The air was electric, and Jane’s chest tightened as she tried to navigate the storm of emotions around her. “Jane, you don’t have to hide anything from me,” Angelo said quietly, taking her hand. “I need to know how you feel.” Felix stepped forward, his voice steady but tinged with sadness. “Jane, I know you care about me… but I also know there’s someone from your past who matters to you. I don’t want to come between that.” Jane looked at them both—Angelo, her safe haven, her first love; Felix, her thrilling new spark, her first crush that felt like fate. The choice was hers, and it was agonizing. Finally, she took a deep breath. “Angelo… it’s always been you. Felix… I care about you, I really do, but my heart… it belongs to him.” Angelo’s eyes lit up, a mix of relief and pure happiness. He pulled her into a gentle hug, careful but full of promise. Felix forced a smile, swallowing his heartbreak. “I hope you’re happy… both of you. That’s all I ever wanted.” As the festival lights glimmered around them, Jane finally felt a sense of peace. The road ahead with Angelo might not be simple—they had college, exams, and life’s endless challenges—but for the first time, she knew her heart had chosen. And in that moment, among the laughter, the music, and the glowing lights, Jane, Angelo, and even Felix learned that love wasn’t always easy—but it was always worth it. ---
