"How did you get that?" I said. Less prince. More boy.
She shrugged. "My mom passed it down. Family necklace. And you?"
It slipped out before I could stop it.
"I'm the heir of King Asher, the Elemento, wielder of all four elements. My mom gave it to me."
She burst into a laugh.
"I didn't know he could just drop out of the sky. Get a new trick, actor."
She doesn't believe me. I'm out of here. Turned for the door.
She blocked my path. Ladle still in hand.
"I saved you," she said. "You owe me. My dragon may have scared you much but I helped, and you're the scaredy cat. So you better return the favor."
Aiden, surprised again.
Dragon? She owns that dragon?
She figured out what I was thinking." I raised him. Name's Marvu."
This was so embarrassing. No one ever embarrassed me this much. "I've never seen a dragon my whole life until then, I..."
She looked away, as though bored already.
"You know what? Fine." I said. Chin up. Arrogant prince kind of way. "But I'm not cooking dinner and washing plates ever!"
She thought fast. Looked me up and down. Princely cloak. Mud on the hem now.
"You said you're a prince, right?"
"Believe me now?"
She tilted her head. Then mischievous. "Can you fly?"
Me, confused.
Minutes later, I'm flying with her on my back screaming. "This is awesome!"
What was I led here for? I didn't sign up for this. Her weight was exhausting. Arms locked around my neck. Knees tight at my ribs.
Annoyed. "Stop yelling in my ear!"
I asked. Jaw tight. "Why me? Why not your stupid dragon?"
"He never let me ride him," she said. Voice bright. "Past injury on the back."
So I'm the victim. Perfect.
Below us, tall trees passed. Not green. Pink. Leaves wide as shields. Vains glowing faint like they had fire inside.
The branches swayed though there was no wind down there.
Like the forest was breathing.
Petals drifted up to meet us. Soft. Silent.
I went down a bit. Just enough so her hand could reach out.
Her fingers brushed the leaves in flight. She gasped.
I felt her breath on my neck. Warm. Fast.
My heart, pounding hard. I almost lost control.
For a second the sky tilted.
She was happy. Hair wild from the flight. Grin too wide.
"That was memorable," she said.
We sat on the edge of a cliff. Feet dangling over air. She, as though sure I'd catch her if she fell. Not even holding on.
I told her not to be cocky.
She only responded mischievously. "You're the one who should worry more about falling."
While I was confounded at that, she made a unique shout that echoed. Sharp.
Then behind me, wings flapping heavily.
Air hit my back like a storm. My heart pounding as I had my suspicions.
She watched me. Holding her laugh. Eyes bright. Waiting.
I finally saw the dragon.
Terrified, I didn't know when I fell off the cliff. Legs gave out. Air grabbed me.
She guffawed with her hand on her mouth. Shoulders shaking.
Dramatically, I flew back up with a mean face. Cheeks hot. Cloak flapping.
Dragon or not, I had enough embarrassment for one day.
