CHAPTER 3 Broken
*Aria’s POV *
I fled the building, the walls closing in on me as I ran. The tears that I had been struggling to hold back came pouring out. My hand grasped my chest, I was burning up inside out.
Hours later, I found myself back at our—no, his—house. The mansion I once called home now felt foreign to me, I couldn't bring myself to call it home anymore. I packed all my belongings, moving my things to the guest room. I bawled my eyes out all night.
I wasn’t ready to face Victor yet. I chose to remain locked up in the guest room. I had no plan nor could I figure out what course of action to take, I knew better than anyone that I was stuck, and trying to fight back would be me trying to start a losing battle.
A week went by without me saying a word to Victor, we were like strangers to each other. Later that day while I lay in the guest bedroom, I heard a knock on the door.
“Who is there?”
“It’s the butler madam”
“You can come in”
“Madam, the master of the house asked that I hand these documents to you,” he said handing over to me a folder.
“You may take your leave”
I opened the folder up and brought out its contents, as I had set my eyes on the document tears trailed down my cheeks. They were Divorce Papers. I ran out looking for Victor, I had no idea what I was going to say when I stood right in front of him. My head and heart ached. I bumped into the butler in the kitchen, he let me know that Victor had just gone out. I drew a stool out and sat on it, I was determined to wait until he came back.
Hours later, Victor finally came back. I watched him walk through the doors so carefree with a smug look on his face, which had me in a fury. I tried calming myself down, I didn’t want him to see he had gotten to me.
“What is this Victor?” I knew exactly what those documents were but I wanted to hear it from him.
“Aria, … can you not read? they are obviously divorce papers and I need your signature on them.” He said with a cold tone.
“Do you not feel any remorse for what you’ve done?” I asked
“No Aria, I have found the woman that I love. The heavens just happened to have used you to bring her my way” he said as a smile crawled up his face.
“Aren’t you happy you could be useful to me?” he said as he walked towards me and grabbed my hair.
It was obvious that he derived joy from seeing me like this.
“So you never loved me? What we had was just a fleeting moment for you. You saw me as someone you toss when you’re bored and have no use for.”
Victor had coerced me a year ago into giving his mom one of my kidneys, in the name of love. I loved him dearly and couldn’t bring myself to say no. The surgery went smoothly or so I thought. Mandy moved in with us right after the surgery. Months later, I started experiencing discomfort, so I decided to go to the hospital for a thorough check-up. The tests and examinations revealed that I had developed further complications, which were directly caused by the surgery I had undergone.
I got back home and told both Victor and his mother about the situation and they both downplayed it. Since the surgery, it was like, there was a switch in both their attitudes. Mandy would lay her hands on me over the littlest of mistakes and even when I tried talking to Victor about it, it ended up being my fault. Just when I thought it would end there, Victor also started getting physical with me whenever he was drunk or angry, and when he got back to his senses, he would start apologizing.
My health condition wasn’t getting any better, but at least it wasn’t getting worse, I reassured myself, trying to convince myself that I could still hold on to our marriage.
“Aria Aria Aria, you sweet little thing, you must think me in this moment to be evil but I’m just doing what’s best for us, saving you the stress of trying to fix this failing marriage,” he said still grabbing my hair.
Trying to salvage whatever dignity I had left I said “I’ll sign the papers just let go of my hair”, so I signed the documents.
“Now wasn’t that easy? Since you helped my mom with your kidney, I would give you some money so you don’t leave empty-handed”
“Aren’t I a good guy?” He said laughing as he walked away.
I broke down in tears as soon as his body walked out of the kitchen.
With my feet failing me I staggered to the guest room to pack my bags. I was devastated and hurt, I couldn’t stop the tears that flowed. I knew he wasn’t worth my tears and that I deserved better, but I couldn’t bring myself to shut off the pain I felt from the thought of losing him.
“Snap out of it,” I said slapping my cheeks with both my hands.
I continued putting my luggage together when I had a knock on the door.
“Who is there?”
“It’s the butler Miss Aria”
‘I guess it’s no longer madam’ I thought to myself.
“What do you need?”
“The Master of the house has asked that I see you out,” he said calmly.
‘so he has resulted to throwing me out,’ I murmured
“He also asked that I hand over a bank cheque to you,” he added.
“I’ll soon be out”.
I freshened up, took a shower, and changed my clothes, I didn’t want to look pathetic anymore. I stepped out of the room immediately after I was done packing. I met the butler who had been waiting out the door for me. He handed me the bank cheque and requested to hold my bags for me.
“Tell that bastard master that I hope his world comes crashing and he rots in hell,” I said headed for the door when I heard Victor’s voice from behind me say “he would not have to do that. I hope not to see you again Aria” his words had no emotions to them.
His mother with a smug look on her face watched me without uttering a word as I left.
