I watched in disbelief as Amelia spat contemptuously and pulled Seraphina behind her protectively.
"Aunt, I'm not being emotional with you!" she snapped at me. "If you keep talking like this in front of my mother and making her uncomfortable, you'll have to deal with me!"
Her words felt like a slap across my face. She was defending Seraphina—calling her mother—right in front of me, her actual birth mother! I nearly choked on my rage.
