Chapter 5

Scylla's world was spinning; she couldn’t understand what was happening. Zach lifted her from her seat and, without warning, captured her lips. He couldn’t control the pull of gravity anymore. She was shocked at the taste of him and blinked many times to make sure this was real. Zach was kissing her. His kisses were hard and demanding, seeking an entrance while she stood like a mannequin. It enraged Zach when Scylla didn’t respond. Was he the only one feeling this? Scylla wanted to take the opportunity, but her senses were very clear. Zach deserved an apology before anything else. She was tempted to kiss him back but she couldn’t. She couldn’t do that to him. She hated herself for thinking that way but knew it was for the better. She pushed him to break the kiss. “No,” she said. The feeling of rejection was evident on Zach’s face. How could a mere push from her affect him that much? “Zach, this is not right,” she started. She needed to clear things tonight and move on from the past. “What is right? Tell me, Scylla, and I will listen if ever you are worth listening to.” Zach threw hurtful words at her, and she had no right to complain. “Zach, I’m sorry.” “Do you think it’s enough? Will sorry make up for the five years of my life?” “I know. Same for me too!” “Don’t give me that crap. You are the one who left, not me!” “That doesn’t make me happy, Zach. We were young and easy to be swayed,” Scylla said, regretting her last word. “Swayed? What do you mean?” Zach was itching to know the whole story. “I mean…” Scylla couldn’t form the words. She was already the bad person; she couldn’t ruin someone else just to make herself clean. “I needed space, Zach, and it was great timing.” “Space?” Zach felt it was the lamest reason of all time. “My father passed away and I needed to take care of my sick mother. Living in this city meant dying to me, it’s expensive and I couldn’t even afford to hire a nurse for my mother,” Scylla explained. Zach was shocked. He had wanted to laugh at her excuse, but her next statement pained him. She had been all alone in her misery. “My goodness, why didn’t you tell me?” Zach was angry, not at her but at himself. “That’s exactly why I didn’t tell you. I didn’t want your pity.” “It’s not pity, it’s being by your side when you need me the most!” “I told you, I needed space.” “You are selfish, Scylla.” “What is there to share? My problems?” She wanted to give a fake laugh but couldn’t. “Do you think I didn’t know the real reason?” Zach said, making her eyes widen. How could he know? It was something between her and his father. “I was right. Your expression says it all,” Zach said with an unreadable look. “It was for your own sake, Zach, trust me.” “Exactly.” His short reply stung. “How could I destroy your big future?” “Of course, you couldn’t. Now tell me yourself and I will listen,” he demanded. “No.” She shook her head. She would keep her promise and not talk about it, not from her own lips. “Why?” Zach asked, confused. Was she embarrassed? He walked closer to her. “What are you doing?” Scylla asked, alarmed. Zach should have been throwing things, transforming into a beast, but he wasn’t. She couldn’t tell what was happening now. “Alright, I’ll tell it myself.” “You knew,” she stated rather than asked. How forgivable of him. Of course, it was his father. “Scylla, you wanted space not because you really wanted it. Ssh… don’t interrupt me.” He placed a finger on her lips. “You didn’t share your problem because you were selfish to own it, to take the pain by yourself. How could I question your love, Scylla?” Zach now caressed her cheek. It was impossible, but Zach already forgave her. He wouldn’t deny it any longer. It had been a long time, and he had chosen the word “hate” so he wouldn’t forget her, so he could go on even without her for years. He had been afraid he wouldn’t find his love again, but this night had happened. She couldn’t run away this time and ruin his plan. “You love me. Why did it take five years to come back to me?” Zach’s sadness pierced her heart. “Zach,” Scylla whispered; she hadn’t expected it. “I did not stop loving you, baby.” Scylla’s heart wanted to burst out. He had called her “baby” their old endearment and he had just said he still loved her. “Oh, Zach.” “Tell me you love me too because I know you do. You still wear our promise ring.” “I love you, Zach. I always love you, always…” She gave him the words he demanded. “God, I knew it!” he said before taking her lips again. This time it was soft, then aggressive. Scylla kissed him back. Oh, how she had missed the taste of his lips. She wanted to slap herself for pushing him away earlier when she had wanted it so badly. “You took too long to come back,” he said, breaking his hungry kisses. He was kissing her as if ravishing her. A course on the fine dining of his favorite. “Zach.” She pushed him away, this time to breathe. “You’re taking my air away.” “I missed you so much I could kiss you one day without stopping!” They both chuckled. “That’s ridiculous. We’ll die,” she said. “Not yet. You can’t die without my permission this time. You have to make up for those five long years.” He warned and kissed her again by surprise. “I like the new name of your company, by the way. So you,” she commented. “Of course, the name lured you here,” he replied. “And your anger earlier made me want to escape, away from you.” “You can’t escape this time, not until you have my permission.” He kissed her again and again. How could she be so lucky with Zach? Was this real and not a dream? And then her nightmare began. The glass door opened and Zach’s father appeared, not pleased.
