Lui leads Fastu and me across the sanctum to a doorway that opens into his own attached living quarters. There is a small kitchen space to the right along with a low table to eat at, and to the left there are a few cushions set out before a series of wall cabinets. They must house his few belongings along with his sleeping mat, put away for the day, and whatever items he keeps for the temple. A young boy putters about the kitchen—one of a group of volunteers who share out the days of the month between them, no doubt, just as it is done at home. Together, they help with the work of the temple and ensure their Speaker is cared for.
