Eleanor refused her.
"I cannot let you throw your whole life away because of Warren."
Iris looked at Eleanor's reddened eyes and wanted to say more, but Eleanor and Warren's father were already walking away, leaning on each other for support. Iris watched their backs and then turned her gaze back to Warren's headstone.
In the end, she went and bought a pair of wedding rings anyway. By the time she returned to the grave, the funeral had ended, and everyone had gone. She placed the men's ring in front of Warren's photo and slipped the women's ring onto her own finger.
"Warren, it is settled then. I will not back out, and you are not allowed to refuse either. You took care of me before. Now I can finally do something for you. It is just a little late. I hope you do not mind."
