Chapter Five: Crossing the Line

820 Words
The black SUV remained parked across the street all morning. Amelia tried to ignore it. She really did. But every time she glanced out the classroom window… The photographer was still there. Watching. Waiting. Her stomach tightened. At lunchtime, the principal knocked gently on her classroom door. “Amelia?” “Do you have a minute?” She nodded. Inside the principal’s office, the atmosphere was unusually serious. “I’ve received six phone calls today.” Amelia frowned. “Parents?” The principal sighed. “Reporters.” “They want interviews.” “They’ve offered money.” Amelia’s face fell. “They actually called the school?” “I’m afraid so.” The principal smiled reassuringly. “I turned every one of them away.” Relief washed over Amelia. “Thank you.” “But…” He hesitated. “…this attention could become a distraction.” She understood what he wasn’t saying. The children came first. Always. “I’ll handle it.” “I promise.” That evening, Nathan was halfway through filming an emotional scene when Oliver called for a break. “We need to talk.” Nathan recognized that tone immediately. “What happened?” Oliver handed him a tablet. Photos of Amelia’s school filled the screen. Photographers stood outside the gates. Children leaving school had accidentally been photographed in the background. Nathan’s jaw tightened. “They went to her school?” Oliver nodded. “It gets worse.” He played a short video. A reporter had stopped one of Amelia’s students. “Can you tell us what Miss Brooks is like?” Nathan’s expression darkened instantly. “They questioned a child?” Oliver nodded grimly. “They crossed the line.” Nathan didn’t wait another second. He walked straight off the set. “Where are you going?” Oliver called. “To fix this.” Thirty minutes later… Amelia was organizing books in her classroom when someone knocked softly. She looked up. “Nathan?” He was still wearing part of his costume from the film set. “You left work?” “I heard what happened.” She tried to smile. “It’s okay.” “No.” He said quietly. “It isn’t.” He looked around the empty classroom. “The media came here.” “They involved children.” “I’m sorry.” She looked at him carefully. “You didn’t send them.” “I know.” “But they’re here because of me.” Before she could respond, voices echoed from outside. More reporters. Nathan walked to the window. At least twenty cameras waited beyond the school gate. He made a decision. “Come with me.” “What?” “I have an idea.” Five minutes later… Nathan stepped through the school gates alone. The reporters rushed toward him. “Mr. Hart!” “Is your relationship real?” “Did Amelia move into your penthouse?” “Are wedding plans underway?” Nathan raised one hand. The shouting slowly stopped. “You want answers?” “I’ll give you one.” Every camera focused on him. “But listen carefully.” He pointed toward the school behind him. “There are children inside this building.” “They deserve privacy.” “They deserve safety.” “If any photographer, reporter, or blogger approaches another student…” “…or enters school property again…” “My legal team will pursue every legal option available.” Silence. His voice remained calm. But every word carried unmistakable authority. “My relationship is my business.” “The children are not.” The speech spread across social media within minutes. Unexpectedly… Public opinion shifted. Fans praised Nathan for defending the students. Parents thanked him. Even news anchors criticized the paparazzi’s behavior. By evening, most photographers had disappeared from the school. Later that night… Amelia stood on the balcony of her apartment. Nathan joined her. “You didn’t have to do that.” “I know.” “But I wanted to.” She looked at him. “You’ve surprised me.” “How?” “I thought celebrities cared more about headlines than people.” He smiled sadly. “Some do.” “And you?” “I’ve spent years trying to survive the headlines.” He looked out at the city lights. “You reminded me there’s a difference.” A comfortable silence settled between them. For the first time since signing the contract… Neither of them was thinking about pretending. They were simply two people sharing the same quiet moment. Then Amelia noticed something across the street. A man wearing a black hoodie stood beneath a streetlamp. He wasn’t holding a camera. He wasn’t looking at the building. He was looking at them. The moment Amelia pointed him out… The stranger turned and disappeared into the darkness. Nathan’s smile faded. “That…” He murmured. “…wasn’t paparazzi.”
