Chapter Seven: Avery Mitchell's POV

Ethan and I arrived at school early today. I was worried since my mom hadn't come back, and I couldn't reach her on the phone.

"Maybe there's still a lot to do," I told myself to stay positive.

In the library, Ethan complained, "Ugh... c'mon, princess, let's go do something else. My head's going to burn."

I laughed. "If you want to go, you can... I'm not stopping you."

Ethan eyed me jokingly. "What about your friend Julian?"

"Er... why did you ask about her?" I replied.

"Because she's cute," Ethan said, grinning. I felt a sting in my heart.

"Wow..." I said, and Ethan laughed.

"Jealous, aren't you?" he teased, leaning in.

I playfully s*****d his cheek. "Don't worry, princess, nobody can steal me away from you," he said, and I felt a flutter in my chest.

"What's going on?" I wondered.

Ethan explained, "It's Liam; he has a crush on Julian, and I think she does too."

"I'm happy for her," I said, laughing lightly. "Now we'll both be equal."

"You need to get yourself a girlfriend to keep you entertained," I added, but Ethan's mood changed.

"I'm not doing that," he said coldly.

I felt for him, knowing Ethan loved Sophia, who broke his heart.

"I'm sorry, Ethan. You know I'm always here for you, okay?" I said, holding his hand.

Ethan pulled me into a playful hug. "Come here, little girl."

Just then, Jasper entered the library. I quickly pulled away from Ethan.

"Hey, babe," Jasper said, hugging me, his eyes fixed angrily on Ethan.

Ethan acted fine, but I sensed tension. "Okay, princess Ave, have fun..." he said, leaving us.

Jasper's anger was palpable. "Hey Mitchell, I want you to spill out what's happening between you and Ethan right now."

"Nothing, I swear. He's just my best friend," I replied.

"How does a guy become your best friend?" Jasper asked, his tone angry.

"It's since childhood, Jasper. Trust me, I don't have feelings for him."

Jasper's expression softened. "Does he feel the same?"

I hadn't thought about that, but I knew Ethan didn't. "He doesn't, Jasper. He has a crush on someone else," I lied.

Jasper smiled. "Oh... okay. I'm sorry; I just didn't want to lose you."

He kissed me, and I felt a mix of emotions.

After class, the day dragged on. Julian was absent, which made it even more boring.

As I walked down the hallway, lost in thought, I tripped over the queen bees, who had set their leg to trip me.

Furious, I confronted them. "What was the meaning of that?"

Zoey approached me, her face cold. "Honey, there have been a lot of rumors, and I don't like it."

"What rumors?" I asked.

"About you and Ethan, girl... didn't I warn you?"

Ethan was my best friend, and I stood firm. "Seriously, Ethan is my best friend. If you want him, come to me, simple."

Zoey chuckled. "Get him to like me, to notice me, or else... I'll take Jasper away from you."

I laughed. "Jasper loves me, you freak."

The queen bees laughed, and Dakota spoke up. "Jasper is using you to pass time. He's in love with Sophie."

Zoey added, "I can get rid of Sophie if you bring Ethan to me."

I left, reeling from their words. Could it be true? No, Zoey just wanted Ethan.
