Chapter 9: Ethan Thompson's POV
I stood by my wardrobe, surrounded by clothes my parents had bought for me. They always wanted to spoil me, but I remained grounded. My elder sister, Gabbie, was abroad, and my parents' wealth meant I had nothing to worry about.
I changed into a white polo and light grey joggers, grabbed my backpack, and rushed downstairs. My mom was on the dining table, flipping through magazines.
"Mom, morning," I greeted.
"My bad boy, how was your night?" she asked.
"Fine, mom," I replied, sitting down.
She noticed my serious expression. "Looks like you have something on your mind. Tell me, son."
"Mom, can I ask for a favor?" I requested.
"Say it, son, and it's done," she said with a smile.
"Avery's mom lost her job, and now she can't go to college. Their uncle won't give them their property," I explained.
My mom's expression turned thoughtful. "Is that all?"
"Yes, mom, please. I don't know if there's anything you can do. Avery's my best friend," I said, holding her hands.
She smiled. "I'll do something. Let me dig up personal information about the uncle. Text me their address, and I'll visit her to get it done."
I hugged her tight. "That's my queen."
My dad interrupted, "Son, stop flirting with my wife."
We laughed, and my dad emerged from the kitchen, apron and knife in hand. "Honey, get over here and help me, or no food for you."
My mom quickly stood up, and I chuckled.
This was the kind of family I needed, love and happiness.
After bidding them goodbye, I left for school. Michael and Liam approached me.
"Dude, there's a tournament against Oak High School," Michael announced.
"When?" I asked.
"Next month, after our test," Michael replied.
Liam added, "Our captain said we need to recruit girls since the other schools are bringing them."
At lunch, I ran into Avery, her head buried in her phone.
"Princess, you look worried," I said.
"Yes... it's Jasper. I'm looking for him," she replied.
I suggested, "Check the cafeteria. And consider joining the basketball competition during break."
Avery declined. "No... eww."
I reassured her, "Don't worry about yesterday's matter; it's settled concerning your mom."
Her eyes brightened. "Really?"
I nodded, and she jumped into my arms. I quickly dropped her, mindful of Jasper.
At the basketball court, I saw Sophie spinning a ball with her hands.
"Ethan," she called.
I ignored her, but she approached me. "Ethan, please... I'm really sorry for the breakup. I didn't mean to hurt you."
I remained skeptical.
"I know we're not dating, but I want us to be friends," Sophie said.
Liam snickered in the background.
"Sophie, I don't want anything to do with you," I replied.
" I'm in love with another, I just want to join the baseball team. That's why I apologized. I know you wouldn't let me join because of our past," Sophie pleaded.
Her genuine tone caught me off guard.
"Please, I love baseball. It's my passion," Sophie said.
