The digital clock on Elena’s desk glowed 7:15 PM. Most of the floor had already emptied out, the rest of the staff fleeing the building like survivors escaping a sinking ship after the turbulent board meeting earlier that afternoon.
Only the tapping of Elena’s keyboard broke the silence of the open-plan office. Her fingers flew across the screen, frantically revising the structural margins of the Apex Project just to keep her hands busy—just to keep her mind from replaying the way Ryan Sterling had looked at her, the way his fingers had felt wrapped around her wrist, burning through layers of hard-earned armor.
He’s just an investor, she reminded herself for the hundredth time, her jaw tightening as she deleted a paragraph of notes. A ghost with a bank account.
Suddenly, the collective low hum of the office ventilation system stuttered. The lights overhead flickered once, twice, and then settled back into a steady, sterile glow—except for the private elevator chime at the end of the corridor.
Ping.
Elena froze. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard. Nobody took the private executive elevator at this hour unless they owned the building. Or unless they were deliberately hunting her down.
Heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed across the polished concrete floor, growing closer with every second. They didn't sound like Marcus’s hurried scuffle or a junior designer's tentative steps. They were slow, rhythmic, and carried an absolute, unshakeable ownership of the space.
Elena didn't turn around. She kept her eyes glued to her monitor, though her vision was suddenly swimming with a blur of code and text.
"The office is closed, Mr. Sterling," Elena said, her voice dropping into a cool, professional register without looking back. "If you have administrative notes on the project, my team will review them tomorrow morning."
The footsteps stopped right beside her desk. The clean, intoxicating scent of cedarwood and autumn rain rolled over her space, crowding out the smell of stale coffee and printer toner.
"I don't deal in administrative notes after hours, Elena," Ryan’s deep, resonant voice brushed against her ear, sending an electric shiver straight down her spine. "And I certainly don't wait for mornings."
Slowly, reluctantly, Elena turned her chair to face him.
Ryan had shed his suit jacket; his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the top, the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, exposing lean, corded muscle and the expensive silver watch ticking quietly against his wrist. He looked less like a corporate executioner and dangerously more like the man she had loved in the dark years ago—only sharper, wealthier, and entirely out of reach.
He wasn't holding a tablet or a file. Instead, he dropped a thick manila folder directly onto the center of her keyboard, cutting off her access to the screen.
"What is this?" Elena demanded, glaring up at him, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
"A modification," Ryan said smoothly, resting one hand on the edge of her desk, leaning in just close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his body. "Effective immediately, the Apex Project requires on-site, round-the-clock structural oversight. And since you are the lead architect who designed this masterpiece..." He paused, a dark, teasing gleam flashing in his steel-grey eyes. "...you have been reassigned to the executive suite."
Elena’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. "Reassigned? To the executive suite? That's fifty floors up! My team is down here, my drafting table is here—I can't just uproot an entire operation because you—"
"You can, and you will," Ryan interrupted, his tone shifting from playful to absolute, unyielding authority. He leaned closer, lowering his voice until it was a low, velvet hum meant only for her. "Unless, of course, Ms. Vance is afraid that sharing a floor with me might prove that her professional armor isn't as bulletproof as she pretends."
The challenge hung heavy in the air, sharp and provocative.
Elena’s fingers curled into the fabric of her skirt. She looked up into those devastating eyes, refusing to back down, refusing to let him see how much he was shaking her world apart.
"I am not afraid of anything you have to offer, Mr. Sterling," Elena whispered back, her chin lifting with fierce, unyielding pride.
A slow, dangerous smile finally curved the corner of Ryan’s lips—a victory, however small, won in the first round of a war that had just begun.
