Chapter Four

The week dragged on, my tongue healing enough to whisper by Friday. Sophia's condo, with its sleek glass walls and city views, felt like a cage for my racing thoughts. Ethan's betrayal stung, but Noah's memory his piercing green eyes, his commanding touch haunted me more. Would he be at Sam's gathering tomorrow? The idea thrilled and terrified me. I stared at my new phone, Sam's text glowing: Blue Lantern club, 8 p.m. Bring Sophia. I hadn't answered. Part of me wanted to hide, to nurse my broken heart. But Noah's pull was stronger, like a current I couldn't resist. "Lila, you're going, right?" Sophia asked Saturday morning, her blonde hair catching the sunlight as she poured coffee. Her blue eyes sparkled with excitement. This could be your chance to forget Ethan." The warmth of my coffee grounded me as I held it. "What if I'm not ready? Noah... he's intense. I don't even know him." Sophia leaned forward, her voice firm. "You lit up after that night. Ethan dimmed you, but Noah? He woke you up. Take the risk." Her words stirred something in me. I typed a quick reply to Sam: We'll be there. My heart pounded as I hit send. That evening, I selected a fitted emerald dress that hugged my curves, my purple hair falling in loose curls. In her gleaming silver gown, Sophia seemed straight off a magazine cover. The Blue Lantern club throbbed with energy; its neon lights painted shadows over Chicago's high society. The smell of costly perfumes and ambition filled the air while the crystal chandeliers hung over us. Sam spotted us and signaled to the corner table where Tom and some other guys were sitting. "Lila, Sophia, you made it!" Sam said, his glasses glinting under the lights. "Meet Tom, and these are Claire and Marcus, seniors in our engineering program." Claire's smile was warm, but Marcus, a tall man with sharp cheekbones and a tailored suit, watched me too closely. He seemed to be assessing me with a cunning edge in his black gaze. I smiled sweetly but shifted uneasily. While Sophia talked to Tom, Sam placed an order for drinks, his generosity disarming. My heartbeat accelerated as I looked around the crowd. No Noah. Disappointment twisted in my chest, sharp and unexpected. "Lila, dance?" Marcus asked, his voice smooth as he extended a hand. His watch gleamed, probably worth more than my tuition. I hesitated, his intensity unsettling. But refusing felt rude. I said, "Sure." then let him lead me onto the dance floor. The music vibrated, and his too tight hands rested on my waist. He bent in, his fiery breath on my ear. He whispered, "You're not like the others here." he murmured. "Smart, different. I like that. I smiled through gritted teeth. Before stepping back, I whispered, "Thank you," but he maintained gentle pressure on me. "Don't run off," he urged, teasingly yet with a hint of order. "I'm Marcus Langston. My family owns half this city. "Stay with me, and you'll know what power feels like." My stomach rumbled. His wealth didn't impress me it made me wary. A strong voice broke over the music before I could pull away. Noah emerged, his black hair drifting across his forehead, green eyes fixed on Marcus. "Mind if I step in?" His black suit was precisely made, implying money I had not seen before. His presence filled the vacuum with a commanding and risky vibe. Marcus released me though his jaw tightened. "Be my guest," he said, backing back with a chilly smile. With his magnetic touch, Noah grabbed my hand. As the tune changed to a gentler tempo and his palm cradled the small of my back, he gently drew me close. "You good, Lily?" he inquired in a soft voice, using the nickname he had given me. "I-I didn't expect to see you here," I stammered, breathless from the sensation of my heart rate increasing, and trying to speak over the rhythm of the faltering music. Noah's answer only partially registered as my thoughts remained in a haze, "Sam asked me to come over," he told me, sending a shiver down my spine as his lips grazed my earlobe. "But I came for you." His words ignited something in me, hope, fear, desire. "Why?" I asked, searching his eyes. "You do not know me." "I know enough," he stated, his eyes sharp. "You aren't like the others here. You're real. I want to know more." I swallowed, caught in his pull. His hand clenched somewhat and we moved as one, the universe fading around us. A nagging voice, however, reminded me of Ethan's infidelity. Could I trust Noah? His wealth, his confidence, it all screamed danger. Yet my body leaned into him, craving the connection. "Lila!" Sophia's voice broke through, urgent. She pushed through the crowd, her face pale. "We need to leave. Now." "What's wrong?" I asked, stepping back from Noah. She glanced at Noah, then at me. "It's Ethan. He's here. And he's with someone... dangerous. Panic gripped me. I spotted Ethan with Mia. He had his hand around her waist and they were standing by the bar. But there was a man in a dark coat standing next to them. A shadow concealed the rest of his face. When he looked at me I wanted to look away. I was sure he was a loathsome and powerful man. "Who is that?" I animately asked while trembling. "I have no clue. But I heard Marcus talking to him. They're paying attention to you." Sophia murmured. A small gasp escaped me, "What are you not telling me?" I remember hearing the sound of Noah's voice become sharper laced with annoyance. "Why are your hands on me?" Noah tightened the grip he had around my wrist. "You are with me now and I intend to keep you that way. You're safer with me. Sophia: "Marcus is on his way and.. "Let me think, I'm not done yet." A smirk appeared on Noah's face and he turned away from me, prattling on with a completely different tone, voice full of confidence. "Noah is a trillionaire Lila if you didn't know. He's the man watching you and not with very impressive intentions I might add." A light chuckle left him. "I don't really feel the need to hide it. Though I do pity the person that decides to eliminate you." Frustration was brewing, "Why waste your time." Before I could Weff silent Marcus walked over and in a soft voice said which sent a chill down my spine, "There's a sharp limit to what you can do. Stand within your limits." With a steely voice, he said, "Try me, Langston. Lila's with me." The air crackled with tension. The man in the coat and Ethan stepped closer, staring at us. With an angry look, Noah gripped my other hand while Sophia grabbed my arm and dragged me toward the exit. His voice panicked as he pleaded, "Lila, trust me. You won't get out of here unless you come with me right now." My heart raced, torn between the seduction of Noah's words and my own worry. Who was after me? What did Marcus and that man want? And why was Noah, a man I barely knew, risking everything to protect me? As the crowd closed in, I had to make a choice: trust Noah or run.
