An unexplainable tension coursed through The Blue Lantern club almost electrifying in nature as Noah's words still rang in my head: "Lila, trust me. Come with me now, or you won't make it out of here." I felt myself torn between the handsome magnetic abyss of his green irises pitted against the fear stalking me in the back of my mind.
Mia, along with Ethan, stood at the bar conversing with a man attired in a black coat, all three of them fixating their gaze on mes like hyenas. I could still hear Marcus's promise to Noah.
"Let her go or you'll regret it." Sophia willfully pulled at my appendage, propelling me towards the exit but as much as I tried pulling away, Noah's hold on my hand was patient yet unyielding.
"Who is stalking me now?" I said, my voice quaking with fear.
"Why is it me facing this problem instantly?"
Noah's jaw set in a rigid line, his gaze roving the area. "Not here," he said, voice muted yet insistent. "Come with Me."
My legs faltered. Noah was but a stranger, this club's billionaire owner, and it somehow excited me that he rendered his aid. But the man in the dark coat dared to inch closer, his enigmatic gaze digging a nearby hole. My stomach twisted. Sophia's visage looked pale, her grip on mine became deathly. So I gestured toward Noah, who then takes us steps to the side door through which music plays into the dimly lit hall.
"What is our final destination?" I mumbled just above audibility, my voice sharp even as we sped around corners and through corridors past sleek walls and polished floors
"My private office," Noah said, not slowing down. "It's secure."
Sophia shot me an anxious glance. "Lila, what is going on? Who was that man?"
"I have no idea," I replied. How could Ethan betray me?
Whatever pain I might have felt over his betrayal, though, this was about a larger danger looming. Noah's wealth and power, Marcus's ominous warning, the stranger's stare that sent shivers down my spine. All of it was enough.
We arrived at a lavish office furnished with dark wood and a towering desk: Chicago's skyline filled the enormous windows.
Noah entered the code to a thick steel door, which opened, and mi as soon as we secured the office, the door locked with a quiet click.
"Sit." His calm but firm voice steadied me, allowing me to sink into the leather couch without hesitation. I chose to remain on edge.
"Noah, brace yourself. Who is pursuing me, and for what reason do you fancy my existence?"
With his jaw propped up on the desk, he managed to lean on it.
The tailored suit he wore heavily showcased alongside his lean body. " The man with Ethan is Victor Crane, a fixer for powerful people. He works for someone who wants leverage over me.
You're that leverage."
My breath caught. "Leverage? I'm nobody. I'm just a student."
"You're not nobody to me," Noah stated softly but firmly, his green eyes fixed on mine. "The night we spent together was more than simply a game. I felt something. I think you did too."
My cheeks warmed, memories of his touch flooding back. But I pushed them aside. "You're a billionaire who owns clubs. Why am I a target because of you?"
Noah's expression darkened. "I've made enemies. My company,
Sterling Enterprises, controls major real estate and tech investments. Someone, likely Marcus Langston's family, wants to force my hand in a deal. They've been watching you since we met, knowing you could be used to hurt me."
"Marcus?" I asked, my voice rising. His calculating stare at the club made sense now. "What deal?"
"A merger that would give the Langstons control over half my assets," Noah said. "If I refuse, they'll come after you to pressure me. Crane's already digging into your life, your classes, your friends, your past with Ethan
Fear gripped me. "Why me? We barely know each other."
Noah stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. "Because they saw us together. They know I'd protect vou."
My heart raced, torn between trust and doubt. "Protect me? You don't even know my real name."
"I know enough, Lila," he said, his voice low, almost a growl.
"You're smart, fierce, real. I haven't stopped thinking about you.
Sophia cleared her throat, breaking the moment. "This is intense, but what's the plan? They're outside."
Noah straightened, his tone all business. "Crane won't act in public not yet. But they'll follow you, Lila. Your apartment, your classes, Sophia's condo they'll be watching. You're not safe alone.
I sank onto the couch, my head spinning. "What do I do? I'm just trying to finish college, not play spy games."
Noah's eyes softened, but his words were firm. "There's a way to keep you safe. Marry me
I froze, my breath stopping. "What?"
"A contract marriage," he said, pacing now. "Legally, as my wife, you'd be untouchable. The Langstons wouldn't dare cross me directly, it's too risky, even for them. My name, my resources, would shield you."
Sophia's jaw dropped. "Lila, this is crazy."
"Is it?" Noah countered, turning to her. "They're already tracking her. Crane's not playing. If she's my wife, she's under my protection. My security team, my properties she'd be safe."
I stood, my voice shaking. "You want me to marry you? A stranger? For what, a business deal?"
"It's not just business," Noah said, stepping so close I could feel his warmth. "I want you safe. And I want you, Lila. That night wasn't a fluke. I'll protect you, but I won't lie, I feel something for you.
My chest tightened, his words stirring that spark from our night together. But doubt gnawed at me. "How do I trust you? You're a billionaire with secrets. This could be a trap."
Noah's eyes flashed with frustration. "A trap? I'm risking my empire to keep you safe. If I wanted to use you, I wouldn't be offering my name, my protection. I'd walk away."
"Then why don't you?" I challenged, my voice sharp.
"Because I can't, he said, his tone raw. "You're in my head, Lila. I don't walk away from what matters.
Sophia grabbed my arm. "Lila, think. Ethan's out there with that creep. This might be your only way out."
I pulled away, pacing. "A fake marriage? What's the catch?"
Noah's voice was steady. "It's a contract. Six months, maybe a year. You live with me, attend events as my wife, play the part.
In return, you get full security, bodyguards, safe houses, my team watching your back. When the threat's gone, we divorce quietly. You walk away free, with enough money to finish your degree without loans."
My mind reeled. "And if I say no?"
"They'll keep coming," Noah said, his voice grim. "Crane's patient, but he's ruthless. They'll use Ethan, your friends, anything to get to you. You're already a target."
Fear coiled in my gut. Ethan's betrayal had shattered me, and now I was a pawn in a billionaire's war. But Noah's intensity, his touch it felt real. Could I trust him?
"What's in it for you?" I asked, narrowing my eyes.
"You," he said simply, his gaze unwavering. "And a chance to keep the Langstons from winning."
I glanced at Sophia, her face tense but nodding slightly. The club's muffled bass vibrated through the floor, a reminder of the danger outside. Crane's cold stare flashed in my mind. I had no money, no power, just a broken phone and a broken heart.
Noah's offer was a lifeline, but it came with chains.
"Draw up the contract," I said finally, my voice barely steady.
"But if you betray me, Noah, I'll make you regret it."
His lips curved, a mix of relief and something deeper. "Fair enough, Lily. I don't break promises."
Sophia exhaled, grabbing my hand. "This better work."
Noah moved to his desk, pulling out a tablet. "My lawyer's drafting it now. We'll sign tonight, and you move to my estate tomorrow. Crane won't touch vou there."
A knock at the door made me jump. Noah checked a security feed on his tablet, his face hardening. "It's Marcus. He's alone, but Crane's still out there."
"What does he want?" I asked, my pulse spiking.
"To negotiate," Noah said, his voice like steel. "Stay behind
me.
He opened the door, and Marcus stepped in, his tailored suit pristine, his dark eyes cold. "Noah, you're making a mistake," he said, glancing at me. "She's not worth your empire."
"She's worth more than you know," Noah shot back, stepping in front of me. "Leave her out of this, Langston.
Marcus smirked. "You think a ring will stop us? We know her weaknesses, her friends, her classes. Even your money can't hide her forever.
"Try me," Noah said, his voice a low threat. "Hurt her, and your family's empire burns."
Marcus's smile faltered, but he turned to me. "Choose carefully, Lila. Noah's playing a dangerous game, and you're the pawn."
He left, the door clicking shut. My knees weakened, but Noah caught my arm, his touch steadying me. "You're safe with me," he said, his eyes fierce. "I swear it.?
But as I stood in his opulent office, the contract looming, I wondered: was I trading one cage for another? And what did Marcus know about me that I didn't?
