For several seconds, Arzoo couldn't move.
The messenger's words echoed through the courtyard.
The rightful heir.
The emperor's arrest.
The throne.
It made no sense.
"I'm not an heir," she whispered.
Zayan looked at her.
"That's exactly what they want you to believe."
Arzoo turned toward him.
"You said my father was a nobleman."
"He was."
"Then why would I be the rightful heir to an imperial throne?"
Zayan's expression hardened.
"Because apparently..."
"...your father wasn't your father."
The courtyard fell silent.
The Crown Was Never the Prize
Arzoo shook her head.
"No."
Zayan stepped closer.
"Listen to me."
"I've listened enough."
Her voice cracked.
"My mother disappeared."
"My father died."
"You took me prisoner."
"And now you're telling me I belong to the same bloodline as the throne?"
"I don't know what you belong to."
His honesty stopped her.
Zayan continued.
"But I know someone has spent twenty years hiding the truth."
"Why?"
"Because whoever controls your identity..."
"...controls the throne."
Arzoo's eyes narrowed.
"And Nadira?"
"She wants to use you."
"How?"
"By making the empire believe you are the rightful heir."
Arzoo stared at the palace.
"What happens if they succeed?"
Zayan's voice was quiet.
"They'll put a crown on your head."
"And then?"
"You'll become their puppet."
The Emperor's Choice
The messenger lowered his head.
"Your Majesty, we must leave."
Zayan didn't move.
Arzoo noticed.
"Why aren't you running?"
He looked at her.
"Because if I run, the empire will believe Nadira."
"Believe what?"
"That I was guilty."
Arzoo's stomach tightened.
"Of killing my father."
Zayan nodded.
"And if you're declared heir..."
He paused.
"...you'll be placed against me."
Arzoo understood.
Nadira didn't need to kill them both.
She only needed to turn them against each other.
A Crown of Chains
The palace bells began ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Then continuously.
From the distant courtyard came the sound of thousands of voices.
"Long live the rightful heir!"
Arzoo's blood ran cold.
They were chanting her name.
She had never asked for a throne.
Yet the empire was already giving her one.
Zayan looked toward the palace.
"We have minutes."
"Before what?"
"Before they come for me."
Arzoo stared at him.
"And what do you want me to do?"
He answered without hesitation.
"Choose."
"Choose what?"
"Whether you want the throne..."
"...or the truth."
She swallowed.
"And if I choose the truth?"
Zayan looked directly into her eyes.
"Then you may lose everything."
The Hidden Door
Zayan led her toward the old courtyard wall.
He pressed his hand against a carved stone.
Nothing happened.
He tried again.
A mechanism clicked.
The wall opened.
Arzoo stared.
"Another secret passage?"
"The palace was built by people who trusted walls more than people."
"Who knew about this?"
"My father."
"And now you."
Zayan nodded.
They entered.
The passage closed behind them.
But they weren't alone.
A figure stepped from the darkness.
Arzoo gasped.
"Mother!"
Samira stood there.
Her sleeve was stained with blood.
"Are you hurt?"
"Not mine."
She looked at Zayan.
"How much have you told her?"
"Enough."
Samira's eyes narrowed.
"Then there's no time left."
Arzoo stepped forward.
"Tell me everything."
Samira hesitated.
Then she removed a small pendant from around her neck.
Inside was a miniature portrait.
Arzoo stared.
It showed a young woman standing beside an emperor.
The man was unmistakably Emperor Rashid.
But the woman...
was not Samira.
It was another queen.
"Who is she?"
Samira answered quietly.
"Nadira."
Arzoo looked closer.
A small child stood between them.
Her heart stopped.
"Who is that?"
Samira didn't answer.
Arzoo's voice trembled.
"Who is that child?"
Zayan looked at the portrait.
Then at Arzoo.
"It looks like you."
The Bloodline Secret
Arzoo stepped backward.
"No."
Samira finally spoke.
"You were born in this palace."
"That isn't possible."
"It is."
"Why did you tell me my father was the Lord of Mirza?"
"Because that was the only way to keep you alive."
Arzoo's eyes filled with tears.
"Who is my father?"
Samira closed her eyes.
"Emperor Rashid."
Silence.
Zayan looked away.
Arzoo could barely breathe.
"My father..."
"Was Zayan's father."
She looked at the emperor.
Their eyes met.
The truth struck both of them at once.
Arzoo wasn't merely a political prisoner.
She was part of the Imperial Bloodline.
But then—
"Why did you hide me?"
Samira's expression broke.
"Because Nadira wanted you dead."
"Why?"
"Because you were the first child born to the emperor after the succession dispute."
Arzoo frowned.
"But Zayan was already the prince."
"Yes."
"Then why was I dangerous?"
Samira whispered,
"Because you were born with a claim no one expected."
The Forgotten Law
Zayan suddenly remembered something.
"The Old Succession Law."
Samira nodded.
"Exactly."
Arzoo looked confused.
"What law?"
Zayan answered.
"Under the old imperial code, if the emperor had no formally designated heir..."
He looked at her.
"...the council could recognize the eldest legitimate child."
Arzoo's face went pale.
"I am older than Kamran?"
"By years."
"And Zayan?"
"Your half-brother."
She stared at him.
"So I could actually inherit the throne."
Samira nodded.
"That's why Nadira is using you."
"But why would she want me alive?"
Samira's answer was chilling.
"Because she doesn't need to control the throne."
"She only needs to control the person sitting on it."
A Daughter's Question
Arzoo looked at her mother.
"You knew all these years."
"Yes."
"You let me believe I was someone else."
"To protect you."
"You let me hate Zayan."
"I had to."
"Why?"
Samira's eyes filled with tears.
"Because if you ever loved him..."
She stopped.
Zayan looked at her.
Samira continued softly.
"...Nadira could use that against both of you."
Arzoo stared at her.
The strange warning from the library suddenly made sense.
If you ever love my daughter...
She turned toward Zayan.
Neither spoke.
The Betrayal
A loud crash shook the passage.
Everyone froze.
Then—
Boom!
The hidden door behind them exploded inward.
Soldiers poured into the passage.
Samira immediately drew her sword.
Zayan stepped in front of Arzoo.
"How did they find us?"
Samira looked horrified.
"Someone told them."
Arzoo's eyes moved through the soldiers.
Then she saw him.
Prince Faris.
Standing behind the guards.
His face was pale.
His hands were shaking.
Arzoo whispered,
"Faris..."
He looked at her.
"I'm sorry."
Zayan's face hardened.
"You betrayed us."
Faris shook his head.
"No."
He stepped forward.
"I betrayed Nadira."
Everyone froze.
He pulled a hidden key from his coat.
"The soldiers think I'm leading them to you."
He looked toward the tunnel behind him.
"But the passage ahead is trapped."
Samira frowned.
"Then why bring them here?"
Faris looked directly at Arzoo.
"Because I needed them to believe I had found you."
He turned toward the soldiers.
"Run!"
He threw the key into the darkness.
A mechanism clicked.
The floor beneath the soldiers collapsed.
They screamed as they fell into the lower chamber.
Zayan stared at Faris.
"You risked your life."
Faris gave a bitter smile.
"I've made enough mistakes."
Arzoo looked at him.
"Who is Nadira?"
Faris's expression changed.
"Someone who has been inside our family for longer than any of us realize."
The Final Revelation
Suddenly, footsteps echoed from the opposite passage.
Samira's face went pale.
"She's here."
Zayan drew his sword.
"Who?"
Samira whispered—
"Nadira."
A woman stepped into the torchlight.
She wore a dark royal gown.
A silver crown rested upon her head.
She looked directly at Arzoo.
Then smiled.
"My daughter."
Arzoo couldn't breathe.
Nadira slowly opened her arms.
"Come to me."
Zayan stepped between them.
"Stay away from her."
Nadira's smile disappeared.
"You still don't understand, Zayan."
She looked at Arzoo.
"I didn't return for the throne."
Then she pointed toward the emperor.
"I returned..."
"...to reveal who your real enemy is."
Arzoo's heart pounded.
Nadira's next words shattered everything.
"Your father didn't die because of a rebellion."
She smiled coldly.
"He was murdered..."
"...because Zayan's mother ordered his death."
Zayan went completely still.
Samira whispered,
"She's lying."
Nadira laughed.
"Then ask her why she has spent twenty years hiding the murder weapon."
Arzoo turned toward her mother.
And for the first time...
Samira had no answer.
