CHAPTER 13: THE FACE BEHIND THE MASK

1082 Words
The rain came down like silver knives as Rayna’s boots hit the wet pavement. Blood smeared the edge of her sleeve—her own or someone else’s, she didn’t know anymore. All she knew was that she had to keep moving. She’d been ambushed. The safehouse she'd set up just outside Marseille had been compromised—burned to the ground with a silent precision only one kind of person could pull off: someone who knew their every move. Someone *inside*. Her comms had gone dead an hour ago. Her escape route had been sealed. And the man chasing her now wasn’t just another one of Marcus’s brutes—he was someone trained. Efficient. Silent. Rayna ducked into an alley, clutching the microdrive against her chest. It held intel Adrian needed—coordinates, ledger codes, and a name. A name Ethan had written in invisible ink. A name that would crack everything open. She just had to survive long enough to deliver it. A shadow loomed. Rayna turned. Too late. Pain exploded in her ribs as a heavy boot connected, sending her crashing into a wall. She gasped as the drive flew from her grasp. A hand reached down—gloved, deliberate—and retrieved it. “End of the road, sweetheart,” the masked figure said, voice distorted. “But don’t worry. We’re not killing you. Yet.” Rayna blinked through the rain, trying to focus. That voice… it was filtered, but something about the way they moved—it was familiar. “Who are you?” she hissed. The mask tilted. “You’ll know soon enough. Tell Adrian… loyalty is a fragile thing.” And then the figure vanished into the night. --- Adrian’s fists slammed against the table. “How the hell did this happen?” Zariah stood across from him, pale but composed. “Rayna’s last message said she had something important. She never made it back.” “She’s been off-grid for ten hours.” “She could be dead.” Adrian looked up sharply. “Don’t. She’s survived worse.” Cole stepped forward, arms crossed. “She was smart. If she was ambushed, she would’ve left breadcrumbs.” “She did.” Zariah pulled out a crumpled napkin, stained with coffee and ash. “She left this in a safe deposit box under her alias. I think it’s for you.” Adrian took the napkin, unfolding it slowly. There, scribbled in fading ink, was a single phrase: **“The wolf wears a familiar face.”** His blood went cold. Cole’s voice dropped. “What does that mean?” Adrian looked between them. “It means we have a traitor. And they’re close. Too close.” --- Meanwhile, Rayna woke in a dim room, wrists bound, head pounding. The microdrive was gone, but she wasn’t dead. That terrified her more. She glanced around. Cameras in each corner. One exit. Steel door. She wasn’t in a facility. She was in a *private cell.* Then the door opened—and everything in her world cracked apart. “*You*?” Rayna whispered. The person before her smiled coldly. “Surprised?” Rayna tried to move forward, fury blazing. “You’re working for Marcus?” “Let’s just say… I believe in results. Adrian’s little crusade? It’s doomed. Ethan was naive. And Zariah? Emotional leverage. That’s all she ever was.” “You’re wrong,” Rayna spat. “They have a chance. We were making progress—” “That’s exactly what Marcus feared. That’s why I fed him everything. Locations, passwords, intel.” Rayna shook her head, heart cracking. “You betrayed all of us.” The traitor leaned in. “And you know what the best part is? They still trust me.” Rayna smiled bitterly. “Not for long.” “You’re not getting out of here, Rayna.” Rayna’s eyes gleamed. “That’s what they all say… right before I burn their house down.” --- Back at the base, Adrian, Zariah, and Cole began digging. Every communication Rayna ever had, every clearance point they’d shared—it all hinted at one horrifying truth: *They’d been watched from inside for months.* But the deeper they dug, the murkier it got. Every clue contradicted the next. One file traced back to Cole. Another to Zariah. Even Adrian’s personal terminal had been mirrored without his knowledge. “It’s like someone’s setting us up to mistrust each other,” Cole muttered. “Or splinter us before the final blow,” Zariah said. But then… something clicked. Adrian pulled out a video file Rayna had hidden in a backup drive. He decrypted it manually, frame by frame. The footage showed a grainy interior camera. Marcus’s men. A meeting room. And then— The camera panned to a figure entering the room. Familiar gait. Confident posture. Face obscured by a hat. Then he turned. Adrian froze. It was **Damien**. One of Ethan’s most trusted inner circle. The man who had helped secure the Geneva escape route. The one who’d sworn loyalty to Zariah the day of her false wedding. “I can’t believe this,” Zariah whispered. “He’s been with us for *years*.” Adrian’s voice was ice. “Which makes him the perfect mole.” --- Rayna didn’t wait for a rescue. While the traitor gloated during a power outage, she used a hidden blade in her boot to slice through the rope binding her wrists. She knocked the traitor out cold, retrieved a security badge, and made her way through the labyrinth of underground tunnels. She escaped through a storm drain and into a truck yard, hijacking a vehicle with bloody hands and sheer will. Twelve hours later—battered, bruised, but alive—she stumbled into the safehouse. Zariah screamed and ran to her. “Rayna!” Adrian caught her before she fell. “You made it.” Rayna gripped his shirt. “It’s Damien. He’s been feeding Marcus everything.” Cole’s face paled. “He’s… in Berlin. On recon.” Adrian turned to Zariah, fire in his veins. “Then we need to end this. Tonight.” --- Somewhere in Berlin, Damien answered a call on a burner phone. The voice on the other end was sharp. “She escaped.” Damien didn’t flinch. “Then it’s time to accelerate the timeline.” “And the girl?” A pause. “She’s more dangerous than we thought. We’ll need to break her… or bury her.”
