Brandy looked out the window where the twinkling lights of the Christmas sign were beginning to light up. The New York sky has gently let go of the deep black velvet fabric. Brandy took a deep breath, filling his chest with the aroma of coffee. It made him awake to enjoy this moment, enough to forget the worries contained in his heart right now.
At that time, Christina had also just stepped into the Red Apple hospital - where her mother was under inpatient treatment. She was in a very comfortable mood. Thanks to Marc - a male real estate agent of the TA company, she was able to light up a little hope in her heart. But as soon as she entered Agatha's hospital room, suddenly, Christina saw her lying on the floor. Agatha's face turned gray. Her breathing is slowly slowing down. Christina was very frightened. She did not dare touch Agatha because she was afraid she would harm her. Christina yelled and pressed the emergency button on the wall.
Scared, Christina rushed out, screaming for help from the doctors and nurses. Immediately, everyone ran to Agatha's hospital room. Christina was pushed out to let the medical staff do the work. She panicked and didn't know what was going on inside the room. The hustle and bustle of everyone made Christina feel more and more nervous. Her mood was filled with insecurities.
It wasn't long before Doctor Theseus rushed into Agatha's room. He went to Christina's side and advised her to be as calm as possible: “Don't worry too much. There are uncles and doctors here taking care of Agatha. She will be fine. You should calm down!”
Christina stood still without saying a word. Her tears kept flowing. Christina doesn't know what to do when things seem more stressful. The flickering faces of the doctors and the Head of Department, Theseus, grew more and more uncomfortable, making Christina feel uneasy. A few nurses came out of the room, followed by Agatha's hospital bed. They started pushing her into the emergency room.
Christina panicked, but Doctor Theseus stopped her. He reassured her a few sentences and said: “Agatha's health is currently unstable but still under our control. Promise me you'll stay here so I can help you right now."
Christina seemed to want to fall to the ground, but she managed to pull herself together. Theseus led Christina into Agatha's hospital room and advised her to stay there. Then he quickly left. Christina wrapped her arms around her chest and tried to calm her breathing. She suddenly noticed two cups of still-warm coffee sitting above the window. Christina sat still on the bed. Her eyes were fixed on the two cups of coffee on the windowsill. For some reason, Christina always noticed those two cups of coffee.
She felt both curious and scared as she got up and walked over to the window. Both coffee cups still have coffee stains on their rims. They look like someone who has enjoyed them before. Christina wondered who had visited Agatha. Since the traffic accident, Agatha has rarely interacted with friends and former colleagues. She seemed to have cut off all contact with old acquaintances.
Christina herself knows most of Agatha's close friends, and she has repeatedly warned her not to let them know she is in the hospital. Agatha didn't want a particular star to appear in the middle of her hospital room and cause an uproar in the hospital. Therefore, Christina assumed that the cup of coffee belonged to the chief physician, Theseus. She was just about to get some coffee to try as a spontaneous act of curiosity when, suddenly, at the door, Dr. Theseus looked a little alarmed.
He looked at her and asked if she knew what Agatha had eaten since then. Christina was surprised. She asked Dr. Theseus: "Didn't you stay with my mother? I just got there and found her unconscious on the ground. I see these two cups of coffee. I thought she and you were talking."
"No. I just got into my shift. But did you say coffee?" Doctor Theseus looked at Christina. She leaned to the side and turned her gaze to the window sill. Dr. Theseus quickly stepped forward, looked at the two cups of coffee hesitantly, then turned to Christina and said, "There's something I want you to calm down when you hear… Agatha was poisoned. According to the initial diagnosis, it was probably a neurotoxin.”
When Christina heard that, she immediately fell to the ground. Doctor Theseus lifted her and grabbed her shoulder. He spoke as calmly as he could because that was the only thing he could do well at the moment. Theseus repeatedly emphasized: “Agatha is out of danger. I was hoping you would think hard to figure out why she was poisoned. That is really important.”
“I don't know anymore. Why was she poisoned? You thought I talked to her? The coffee is still warm. She… she didn't fight or hold a grudge against anyone. Oh my God! Everything seems to be going in the craziest way I can't fathom." Christina burst into tears, burying her face in her hands. But Christina's words brought Dr. Theseus' two cups of coffee were closer to his attention. He quickly went out the door to signal a female nurse to approach.
Dr. Theseus said to the nurse in a firm voice: “Bring those two cups of coffee to the lab for me. Then you call the laboratory and poison department doctors to come over.”
The nurse quickly took the two cups of coffee. Christina immediately recognized what Doctor Theseus meant. She looked at him with surprised eyes. Dr. Theseus later said: "Nothing is clear yet. But I think you should call the police when I get the test results."
Doctor Theseus quickly left the room. Christina stayed there until dark. A nurse entered the room and spoke to Christina when the clock struck ten o'clock. “Dr. Theseus asked me to tell you that you should go home and rest. The next morning, he will contact you.”
Christina had no choice but to accept Doctor Theseus' offer. Before leaving, she managed to stay in the emergency room to see Agatha lying inside. Although her chest rose and fell weakly, her face gradually became brighter than noon. Christina returned to the apartment by taxi because there were no more buses. She had just entered the house when she texted Marcel asking for a few days of leave. Christina used the excuse that she had an emergency at home that she had to deal with. Marcel, seeing that, agrees and doesn't ask any more questions. He thinks she is still shocked about losing her position as Sales Director. Christina turned off the phone. She sighed in despair and depression.
Christina's house now looks like a cold and lonely castle. The usual warm yellow lights were turned off by Christina, leaving only endless darkness covering every corner of the villa. Christina boiled water, and made a cup of ginger tea.
She seemed used to this way of living in the dark. Christina uses a robot vacuum to help with most of the daily chores. She spends one day a week cleaning the house and tries to turn it into a hobby, a habit that is hard to break. Christina had always known how to enjoy her life in ways no one would have imagined. If she has to walk to save money, she assumes it's because she enjoys looking at the streets of New York, even though there's nothing pretty about it other than glitz, prices, and crowds if Christina is forced to turn off the electricity to reduce costs.
She attributes it to her preference for a simple and eco-friendly lifestyle. If she completely refuses to have fun, to have fun... to save her time and money, then she thinks it's because she likes an accessible, comfortable lifestyle like a bird in the sky. Christina's life is bound up with a thousand self-made excuses to legitimize a draconian, self-tortured lifestyle for financial freedom before the age of thirty. Christina truly believes that women are most beautiful in their thirties.
She doesn't want her youth wasted by stupid boys or tearful and complicated relationships. Christina didn't want her mind to be troubled by such things. She knew that she was not a princess but a queen. And the queen must always hold her head high to keep the crown in place. Most importantly, the queen does not need the prince's white horse to give her a happy life forever after. The queen must be the one to create it.
Christina looked at the ginger teacup in her hand. Christina thought things would get better, but suddenly things took a negative turn that she couldn't control. Christina thought about the two cups of coffee on the windowsill. Christina sat on the balcony swinging barefoot, then frowned as she looked ahead: “Who's in the ward in the end? If there is poison in those two cups of coffee, who wants to harm Agatha? Or does she want to commit suicide? She couldn't possibly want to commit suicide. So who wants to kill your mother?"
Christina suddenly threw the hot teacup in her hand on the ground. The sound of a broken teacup created an unusually shocking space. She felt like some kind of sound wave was bouncing around in her ears. But Christina could still hear some rustling sounds outside the mansion's gates.
She saw a figure standing outside. The black shadow put his hand on the lock outside the gate and pressed something. Suddenly, the side door opened. The black shadow crept in, crept in. Christina could still recognize them as two men, even from a few dozen meters away.
