Episode 4: Cafeteria Capers

1714 Words
Cassie awoke to the sound of her alarm blaring. She groaned, tangled in her blanket like a burrito. Her desk was a mess from last night’s homework attempt, with pens scattered everywhere and a half-empty water bottle teetering on the edge. She sat up, rubbing her eyes. “Okay, Cassie. Today, be normal. No disasters. Just survive,” she muttered. ‎ ‎Breakfast didn’t cooperate. Her toast popped out of the toaster and landed squarely on the floor. Her cat, naturally, pounced on it before she could rescue it. Cassie groaned. “Perfect.” She shoved a granola bar in her mouth, grabbed her backpack, and ran out the door. ‎ ‎Harmony High was buzzing as usual. Students moved like rushing rivers, some laughing, some pushing past each other, some carrying trays of food. Cassie tried to weave through them, careful to avoid disaster… and promptly tripped over a rolling backpack. She tumbled forward, arms flailing. ‎ ‎“Cassie!” Liam’s calm voice called. He appeared instantly, steady and composed as always. He caught her elbow, preventing a full fall. ‎ ‎“I… I’m fine,” she said, trying to sound confident. ‎ ‎“You say that every day, but I’m starting to doubt it,” he teased, smirking. ‎ ‎Cassie groaned, rubbing her arm. “Maybe you’re right.” ‎ ‎Her first class of the day was English. Cassie hoped for calm and quiet—something safe after the morning chaos. She sat at her desk, unpacked her bag, and tried to pull out her notebook. Naturally, the strap caught on her chair, and her notebook toppled to the floor. ‎ ‎Liam leaned over, helping her gather the scattered papers. “See? Not so bad,” he whispered. ‎ ‎Cassie smiled, feeling her cheeks warm. Somehow, just having him there made disasters feel less terrible. ‎ ‎English passed with minor mishaps—spilled ink, a rolling pen—but nothing catastrophic. She survived. Barely. ‎ ‎Then came lunch, her favorite—and least favorite—part of the day: the cafeteria. The smell of fries, pizza, and mystery meat hit her instantly. Students jostled around, trays clanging, conversations mixing into a chaotic hum. Cassie carried her tray carefully, scanning for a spot. ‎ ‎She spotted Liam near the window, laughing with friends. Relief flooded her. She slid into the seat beside him. ‎ ‎“Mind if I join you?” she asked. ‎ ‎“Of course,” Liam said with a small smile. ‎ ‎Cassie carefully unwrapped her sandwich, trying not to spill anything. She took a bite… and immediately sneezed. A small piece of lettuce flew straight onto Liam’s shoulder. ‎ ‎“Cassie!” he exclaimed, blinking, then laughing. ‎ ‎“I’m so sorry!” she said, cheeks heating up. ‎ ‎“You’re fine,” he said. “Honestly… it’s kind of entertaining.” ‎ ‎As they ate, chaos unfolded around them. A student tripped, sending a tray of spaghetti flying. Cassie ducked, but some sauce splashed onto her sleeve. Liam shook his head, grinning. “You’re impossible,” he teased. ‎ ‎Cassie rolled her eyes but couldn’t help laughing. Somehow, with Liam there, even the messiest moments were fun. ‎ ‎After lunch, the bell rang for P.E. Cassie groaned internally. Dodgeball. She dreaded it. She tried to stay at the back, hoping no one would notice her, but fate had other plans. ‎ ‎“Cassie, you’re on my team!” a cheerful teammate shouted. ‎ ‎“Me?” she whispered. ‎ ‎“Yes, you!” ‎ ‎Liam smirked. “You’ll survive… maybe.” ‎ ‎Cassie groaned. Maybe wasn’t reassuring. ‎ ‎The game began. Cassie ran after the ball, tripped immediately, and sprawled across the gym floor. Her team groaned. Liam jogged over, handing her a water bottle. “You okay?” ‎ ‎“I think so,” she said, laughing despite herself. ‎ ‎She tried again, dodged a ball, and accidentally knocked another player over. Liam stayed near her, helping her avoid the flying balls and occasionally catching a ball aimed at her. ‎ ‎“You’re impossible,” he said again, laughing. ‎ ‎Cassie grinned. “Impossible, maybe. Fun, definitely!” ‎ ‎By the end of P.E., everyone was sweaty, exhausted, and laughing. Cassie felt drained but strangely happy. Somehow, the chaos had been fun because Liam was there with her. ‎ ‎Walking to the lockers, Cassie’s backpack zipper got stuck again. She tugged at it, muttering under her breath. ‎ ‎“You need help?” Liam asked, kneeling beside her. ‎ ‎“Yes, please,” she said, relief flooding her. ‎ ‎He fixed the zipper easily, standing up and giving her a small smile. “There. That’s better.” ‎ ‎Cassie felt a spark in her chest. Maybe school disasters weren’t so bad—especially with someone steady like Liam helping her. ‎ ‎The final bell rang. Students poured out into the hallways. Cassie slung her backpack over her shoulder, turning to leave. Liam walked beside her. ‎ ‎“See you tomorrow?” he asked, smiling. ‎ ‎“Yeah… see you tomorrow,” Cassie said, smiling back, feeling a little lighter than she had that morning. ‎ ‎As she stepped out of the school, she realized something. Chaos was everywhere—from spilled trays to flying dodgeballs to runaway paint—but with someone steady by her side, it could be fun, even sweet. ‎ ‎And maybe, just maybe, she was starting to look forward to tomorrow. ‎ ‎‎The final bell had rung, but Cassie’s day wasn’t over. She trudged to her locker, hoping to grab her books and head home before anything else could happen. Her backpack still felt heavy, her shoes were scuffed from P.E., and her hair had gone completely wild despite her attempts to fix it. ‎ ‎As she fumbled with her locker, the combination jammed. She twisted it one way, then the other. Nothing. The locker refused to open. ‎ ‎“Need some help?” a familiar voice asked. ‎ ‎Cassie looked up to see Liam standing there, hands in his pockets, smiling. ‎ ‎“Yes, please,” she said, relief flooding her. ‎ ‎Liam leaned down and pressed a button on the lock. With a click, it opened easily. ‎ ‎“There. That’s better,” he said, standing up. ‎ ‎Cassie felt a spark in her chest. “Thanks… again,” she said, trying not to blush. ‎ ‎“You’re welcome,” Liam replied with a small smile. ‎ ‎Finally free, Cassie gathered her things. She noticed a few students lingering in the hallway, gossiping, laughing, and occasionally bumping into each other. She felt a familiar surge of anxiety, wondering if she’d trip again. ‎ ‎“Don’t worry,” Liam whispered, as if reading her thoughts. “I’ve got you.” ‎ ‎Cassie blinked at him, her heart skipping a beat. Somehow, just those few words made everything feel lighter. ‎ ‎She followed him to the school exit, where the late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the courtyard. Students were leaving in clusters, chatting loudly, waving to friends. Cassie adjusted her backpack, trying to act calm. Liam walked beside her, calm as always. ‎ ‎“Want to walk home together?” he asked. ‎ ‎Cassie hesitated, then nodded. “Sure… if you don’t mind my… disaster magnet tendencies.” ‎ ‎Liam laughed. “I think they’re kind of fun.” ‎ ‎They walked side by side, dodging younger students running to catch buses and older students carrying sports equipment. A stray soccer ball rolled past, and Cassie instinctively jumped out of its path, landing awkwardly on one foot. Liam grabbed her arm, steadying her. ‎ ‎“You okay?” he asked. ‎ ‎“Yes… mostly,” she said, laughing nervously. ‎ ‎They passed the corner store, where a group of kids were playing with chalk on the pavement. One of them accidentally kicked a piece toward Cassie, and she jumped again, narrowly avoiding it. Liam caught her gently this time, holding her hand for a moment longer than necessary. ‎ ‎Cassie felt her cheeks heat up. “You… you’re always saving me,” she said. ‎ ‎“Someone has to,” Liam replied with a grin. ‎ ‎They finally reached the edge of her street. Cassie’s house was only a few blocks away, but the walk had felt like an adventure, full of near disasters and laughter. ‎ ‎“Thanks for walking with me,” she said, smiling. ‎ ‎“Anytime,” Liam said. “Tomorrow, we can try to survive another day of chaos together.” ‎ ‎Cassie laughed. “Deal. But no promises I won’t trip over my own feet.” ‎ ‎Liam chuckled. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.” ‎ ‎She waved goodbye at her doorstep, her heart light. Chaos seemed inevitable in her life, but with Liam by her side, it wasn’t so scary anymore. In fact, it was… fun. Exciting, even. ‎ ‎Cassie entered her house, dropped her backpack on the floor, and flopped onto her bed. Her cat jumped onto her lap, meowing as if asking what she had been doing all day. Cassie stroked its fur, thinking about all the little moments: the cafeteria mishaps, P.E. disasters, hallway collisions, and Liam’s calm presence through it all. ‎ ‎A small smile spread across her face. Chaos, she realized, wasn’t always bad—especially if it came with laughter, friendship, and maybe a little hint of something more. ‎ ‎Tomorrow was another day at Harmony High, another chance for spills, trips, laughs, and maybe even moments that made her heart beat a little faster. Cassie yawned, closing her eyes, feeling a mixture of exhaustion and anticipation. ‎ ‎Because even though school was messy, unpredictable, and chaotic… it was also full of moments worth looking forward to. Especially moments with Liam. ‎
