Chapter 2 – The Girl Who Learned Silence

1997 Words
Twenty years had passed since Luna Ashwood's world was swallowed by silence. The Blackwood Pack had rebuilt after the Great Wolf War. New homes stood where fire had once consumed everything, while towering pines reclaimed the land scarred by battle. To outsiders, the territory looked peaceful. Luna knew better. Some wounds healed. Others became part of who you were. She stood beneath the ancient oak overlooking the valley, gently tracing the rough bark with her fingertips. It was the last place she remembered seeing both her parents alive. Whenever grief became too heavy, she found herself returning to the tree. Her father's silver moon pendant rested against her chest, cool against her skin. It reminded her that even though the people she loved were gone, their love remained with her. Closing her eyes, Luna focused on the world around her. She couldn't hear the wind rustling through the leaves or the birds singing overhead, but silence had taught her to notice what others ignored. Tiny vibrations beneath her boots told her where rabbits moved through the undergrowth. The brush of air against her skin revealed birds taking flight before they became visible. Her disability had never made her weak. It had simply forced her to become stronger in different ways. Her wolf stirred. Someone is nearby. Luna's eyes opened immediately. She slowly turned toward the thick forest behind her. Nothing. No movement. Still, she trusted her instincts. Raising one hand, she silently signaled whoever was hiding to step out. A familiar figure emerged from behind a pine tree wearing an amused grin. Kai. Her closest friend. He immediately began signing. I almost surprised you this time. Luna smiled. Almost isn't enough. Kai chuckled silently. Unlike most wolves, he had learned sign language when they were children. After Luna lost her hearing during the war, he had spent months practicing until communicating with her became second nature. He had never treated her as though she were broken. He simply adapted. It was one of the many reasons she trusted him more than anyone else. You've been avoiding everyone again, he signed. Luna shrugged. I needed to think. Kai's smile faded. About tonight? She nodded. Every year, on the anniversary of the Great Wolf War, the Blackwood Pack gathered beneath the full moon to remember those who had died protecting their home. For Luna, it wasn't just another memorial. It was the night she lost her parents. Kai rested a reassuring hand on her shoulder. They would be proud of you. Luna looked away. Sometimes she wished she could believe that. Instead, she watched young wolves sparring in the training grounds below. Their laughter carried through the village, even if she couldn't hear it. She could see their smiles, their playful shoves, and the joy of growing up without knowing war. That alone made her parents' sacrifice worthwhile. Twenty years ago, she had hidden behind her mother in terror. Now she was one of Blackwood's strongest warriors. Not because she had never been afraid. Because she had learned to keep moving despite fear. Kai followed her gaze. The elders have another visitor today. Luna frowned. Another suitor? He nodded with a guilty smile. She rolled her eyes. This made the sixth. Since turning twenty-five, neighboring Alphas and warriors had taken turns trying to court her. Each had been respectful. Each had been kind. Each had been rejected. Kai finally asked the question everyone wanted answered. What are you waiting for? Luna looked toward the full moon beginning to rise above the trees. Then she signed the truth she had hidden for years. I don't want a wolf for a mate. Kai blinked in surprise. His hands paused before slowly moving again. Then... what do you want? Luna remained silent for several moments. Finally, she signed. A human. Kai stared at her as though he had misunderstood. A human? She nodded. Why? Luna watched a flock of birds disappear into the evening sky. Everyone assumes I should choose a wolf because I was born one. No one has ever asked what I truly want. Kai listened quietly. During border patrols I've watched humans for years. I've seen parents protecting their children. I've watched families laugh together. I've seen kindness... and I've seen fear. They're not so different from us. She paused, searching for the right words. The wolves who ask to court me see a warrior... or they see the deaf girl who survived the war. Very few see Luna. Kai lowered his eyes. She wasn't wrong. Many admired her strength. Some pitied her silence. Almost no one understood the woman behind either. Luna touched the silver pendant around her neck. If the Moon Goddess truly has someone waiting for me, I don't want them to love me because of my name, a prophecy, or because they feel sorry for me. I want someone who sees me... and chooses me anyway. A warm smile spread across Kai's face. You've always believed love should be chosen, not expected. Luna smiled back. She still believed it. Neither of them noticed the pair of blue eyes watching from deep within the forest. A sudden shiver ran through Luna's body. Her wolf instantly became alert. Someone is watching us. Luna's smile vanished. Without another word, she motioned for Kai to stay behind and slipped silently into the forest... Luna slipped silently between the towering pines, every muscle in her body tense. The faint vibrations beneath her boots guided her deeper into the forest. A crushed fern. Fresh prints in the damp earth. A broken twig swaying gently in the breeze. Someone had crossed into Blackwood Territory. And they knew exactly how to avoid being found. Her wolf prowled restlessly. Be careful. Luna slowed her pace. The deeper she ventured into the woods, the stranger the forest felt. Even the birds seemed absent. Sunlight filtered through the branches, casting shifting shadows across the ground. She stepped into a small clearing. Empty. Her sharp eyes scanned every corner. Nothing. Her instincts had never failed her. She took another cautious step. A faint movement caught the corner of her eye. Luna spun. A hooded figure stood several yards away, almost blending into the darkness between the trees. The long black cloak hid their body. A silver mask concealed their face. Only piercing blue eyes stared back at her. Neither of them moved. Luna slowly raised her hands. Who are you? To her surprise, the stranger answered in perfect sign language. Someone who has waited a very long time to meet you. A chill ran down Luna's spine. Very few wolves outside Blackwood knew sign language. Even fewer could use it so fluently. She took another careful step. How do you know me? The stranger ignored the question. Instead, they signed slowly, making sure every movement was clear. The Moon has not forgotten its silent daughter. Luna's heart skipped. Those words... She had heard them before. Not from another person. From the old pack seer on the night her parents died. Before she could ask another question, the stranger reached beneath the cloak and tossed a small object toward her. Luna caught it instinctively. It was an old silver coin. A crescent moon was engraved on one side, surrounded by symbols she had never seen before. When she looked up again... The stranger had vanished. No footprints. No scent. Nothing. Only silence. "Luna!" Kai emerged from the trees moments later, breathing heavily. He immediately searched the clearing. Did you find someone? Luna nodded and opened her hand. His expression changed the instant he saw the coin. Where did you get that? She quickly explained everything through sign language. The hooded stranger. The silver mask. The mysterious message. The coin. Kai listened without interrupting. When she finished, he stared at the silver crescent with growing unease. I've seen this symbol before. Luna looked at him expectantly. The elders keep records of an ancient order called the Moon Keepers. They served the Moon Goddess centuries ago before disappearing without a trace. Before he could say anything else, a patrol warrior burst into the clearing. "The Alpha has ordered everyone to the council hall." Realizing Luna couldn't hear him, he immediately repeated the message in sign language. Urgent meeting. Everyone. Now. Kai and Luna exchanged worried glances. Neither of them believed the timing was a coincidence. Together, they hurried back toward the village. By the time they reached the council hall, nearly every member of the Blackwood Pack had gathered. Warriors lined the walls while elders spoke quietly among themselves. At the front stood Alpha Dominic Ashwood. Though silver streaked his dark hair, his posture remained strong and commanding. After the Great Wolf War, he had raised Luna as his own daughter, refusing to let her hearing loss define her future. He had even required every elder and council member to learn sign language so Luna would never be left out of important discussions. The moment he saw her, concern flashed across his face. He motioned for Luna and Kai to come forward. "Luna." He greeted her before repeating the word in sign language. Dominic noticed the silver coin in her hand. His expression froze. He stepped down from the platform. Where did you find this? Luna explained everything. As she signed, the hall grew quieter. Every pair of eyes followed her hands. When she finished, Dominic carefully accepted the coin. His thumb brushed across the engraved crescent. "I never thought I'd see this symbol again." One of the oldest elders gasped. "The Moon Keepers..." Dominic nodded. "They were guardians chosen by the Moon Goddess herself." "We believed they disappeared centuries ago," another elder whispered. "So did I." Dominic looked directly at Luna. "If one of them has returned... then the prophecy spoken after the Great Wolf War may finally be unfolding." Uneasy whispers spread across the room. Luna lowered her eyes. She hated being the center of attention. For years she had fought to prove she was simply another member of the pack—not someone destined for greatness. An elderly she-wolf slowly stood. Mara. The pack's seer. Her cloudy eyes rested gently on Luna. "I remember the night your parents died," she signed. "The Moon Goddess spared you for a reason." Luna had heard those words before. But tonight they carried more weight than ever. What reason? she signed. Mara smiled sadly. "I cannot see every path the future takes." "The Moon only reveals what we are ready to know." A thoughtful silence settled over the hall. Dominic handed the coin back to Luna. "Keep it hidden." "If someone is searching for you, we must learn why before they reach our borders again." She nodded and slipped it into the leather pouch beside her father's pendant. Extra patrols guarded every border. Training sessions doubled. Warriors sharpened their weapons until late into the night. Everyone sensed that something long forgotten had awakened. Later that evening, Luna stood alone on the balcony outside her home. The full moon illuminated the forest below. She rested her hands on the wooden railing. Her wolf stirred. You're afraid. Luna smiled faintly. A little. Good. Fear reminds us to stay alive. She closed her eyes. A faint vibration rippled through the ground beneath her feet. Someone had crossed into Blackwood Territory again. Far beyond the northern border, hidden among the trees, a young man lowered his binoculars. His name was Ethan Carter. He had spent his entire life fearing wolves. His father had warned him countless times. "If you ever see a wolf... run." Ethan had every intention of following that advice. Yet tonight, as his eyes settled on the silent woman standing beneath the moonlight, he couldn't bring himself to look away. He didn't know her name. He didn't know she was a werewolf. And he had no idea the Moon Goddess had already intertwined their destinies. High above them, the full moon glowed brightly. The first thread of fate had finally been woven.
