Chapter 8: The Page Between Two Worlds

1764 Words
Morning sunlight spilled across the Silent Crossing as the loose journal page fluttered against the ancient stones. Ethan noticed it just as he turned to leave. He bent down and carefully picked it up. His eyes widened when he read the faded handwriting. If this page is ever found, it means our children have met. Tell them the truth before the darkness does. A chill ran through him. "Our children..." The words could only mean one thing. His father and Marcus Ashwood had expected this meeting long before it happened. But how? He carefully folded the page and tucked it inside Marcus's journal before making his way back toward town. The questions were multiplying far faster than the answers. Across the river, Luna returned to Blackwood Territory with the image of Ethan still fresh in her mind. She tried convincing herself that he was simply another human. Yet every time she closed her eyes, she saw the kindness in his expression. She had expected fear. Instead, she had found curiosity. Her wolf stretched lazily. You're smiling again. Luna immediately wiped the smile from her face. I'm not. You are. She rolled her eyes. Don't start. Her wolf laughed softly. The Moon has strange plans for us. Kai waited outside the council hall. The moment Luna approached, he noticed the thoughtful look in her eyes. "You saw him again." She froze before slowly nodding. Kai sighed. "I thought so." He wasn't angry. Only concerned. They entered the council hall together. Dominic, Mara, and the elders were already gathered around the ancient map. Dominic looked up. "Did anything happen at the bridge?" Luna hesitated. Then she signed everything. Meeting Ethan. Seeing Marcus's journal. Reading her father's handwriting. Every pair of eyes remained fixed on her hands. When she finished, silence filled the room. Dominic slowly closed his eyes. "So Marcus kept his promise." Kai frowned. "What promise?" Dominic looked toward the old map. "Before the war, Marcus Ashwood and William Carter swore that if peace was ever possible again, their children would finish what they had started." Luna stared at him. My father knew Ethan's father? Dominic nodded. "They were more than allies." "They were brothers in everything except blood." Dominic rested both hands on the edge of the table, his expression distant as old memories resurfaced. "They believed humans and wolves could protect one another instead of living in fear," he said, repeating every word in sign language for Luna. "Together they created the Peace Accord, an agreement that allowed trusted members of both sides to meet at the Silent Crossing. They exchanged food during harsh winters, shared medicines when illness spread, and settled disagreements without bloodshed." Kai listened in stunned silence. "So what destroyed it?" Dominic's eyes darkened. "Lies." "Someone wanted the alliance to fail. By the time the truth was uncovered, the Great Wolf War had already begun, and too many lives had been lost." Luna looked down at the ancient map. If hatred had been created by deception... Then perhaps peace could be restored by the truth. Several miles away, Ethan parked outside the local historical museum. If Marcus Ashwood had been a real man, there had to be public records somewhere. The museum curator welcomed him warmly. "What can I help you find?" "I'm looking for information about the Ashwood family." The woman's smile disappeared. "I haven't heard that name in years." She disappeared into the storage room before returning with a dusty archive box. "These were donated decades ago." Ethan carefully opened it. Inside were faded photographs. Old newspaper clippings. Handwritten letters. One photograph immediately caught his attention. Two young men stood shoulder to shoulder beneath a stone bridge. One wore a ranger's uniform. The other smiled proudly while wearing a silver crescent pendant. The caption beneath the photograph read: William Carter and Marcus Ashwood celebrating the Peace Accord. Ethan's heart pounded. The bridge behind them... It was the Silent Crossing. Back in Blackwood Territory, Mara asked Luna to remain after the council meeting. The elderly seer slowly approached her. "The Moon Goddess has shown me another vision." Luna waited patiently. "I saw the bridge." "I saw two paths becoming one." "And I saw darkness following behind them." Luna's fingers tightened around the silver coin inside her pocket. Can the future be changed? Mara smiled gently. "Some parts." "Others..." "They depend on the choices made by those brave enough to walk them." Luna lowered her gaze. The choice before her was becoming clearer each day. Trust Ethan. Or obey the fear the war had left behind. That evening, Ethan spread every document across his kitchen table. The photograph. Marcus's journal. His father's letter. The loose journal page. Piece by piece, the truth slowly began taking shape. His father hadn't lied. He had hidden the truth. Someone else had rewritten history after the war. A sudden knock echoed through the cabin. Ethan quickly gathered the papers. "Who is it?" "It's Grace." He relaxed and opened the door. She looked worried. "I thought you should know." "The forestry department is sending an armed search team into Pine Ridge tomorrow." Ethan's stomach tightened. "Why?" "They believe someone has been hiding in the forest." His thoughts immediately turned to Blackwood Territory. If armed humans entered those woods... Everything could fall apart. Far away, Luna stood beneath the full moon, unaware that danger was already moving toward her home. Above them both, the moon shone silently. The fragile peace their fathers had dreamed of was about to face its greatest test. The following morning, Pine Ridge Forest was anything but peaceful. Three dark government vehicles rolled to a stop at the forest entrance. Uniformed officers stepped out alongside forestry investigators. Several carried tranquilizer rifles, while others unloaded equipment and drones. Ethan watched from a distance, unease settling deep in his chest. Grace walked toward him. "They're treating this like a dangerous wildlife operation," she said quietly. "But I don't think they're only looking for wolves." Ethan frowned. "What do you mean?" Grace lowered her voice. "I overheard one of the supervisors talking. Someone reported strange people moving through the forest. They think there's a hidden settlement somewhere out there." His heart skipped. Blackwood Territory. If the search team found it, panic would spread before anyone could explain the truth. Without another word, Ethan slipped away before anyone noticed. There was only one place he could go. The Silent Crossing. Back in Blackwood Territory, the alarm bell echoed across the village. Although Luna couldn't hear it, she saw warriors rushing toward the council hall. Kai appeared moments later. His expression alone told her everything. Humans have entered the forest. Luna followed him without hesitation. Inside the council hall, Dominic stood over the ancient map while scouts delivered reports. "They've divided into smaller search teams," one scout said. "They're using drones to survey the area." Uneasy murmurs filled the room. Dominic repeated the report in sign language for Luna. She studied the map carefully. One search team was heading directly toward the Silent Crossing. Her wolf stirred. Ethan will be there. Luna nodded almost imperceptibly. If the investigators reached him first, he could become trapped between humans and wolves. Dominic noticed the concern in her eyes. "You want to warn him." Luna met his gaze. Then she nodded. For several long moments, Dominic said nothing. Finally, he sighed. "Go." Kai looked at him in surprise. "Alpha?" Dominic folded the map. "If Ethan truly carries the truth left by his father, he deserves the chance to protect it." He turned to Luna. "But be careful." She smiled gratefully before racing into the forest. Ethan reached the bridge first. Morning mist drifted over the river, hiding much of the ancient stone crossing. He looked around anxiously. "Luna?" Only silence answered. Minutes later, movement appeared between the trees. Luna emerged from the forest at a run. Relief crossed Ethan's face. She slowed as she reached the bridge and quickly began signing. When she realized he couldn't understand, she pointed urgently toward the forest behind him. Then she mimicked people carrying rifles. Ethan's expression changed instantly. "They're coming?" She nodded. Without thinking, he reached into his backpack and removed Marcus Ashwood's journal, his father's letter, and the photograph from the museum. He handed them to her. Luna looked at him in confusion. He placed a hand over his heart. "These belong with your family." She stared at him for a long moment. Then she carefully accepted them. The trust in that simple gesture touched her more deeply than words ever could. Suddenly, voices echoed through the trees. "There!" A search team had spotted movement near the bridge. Ethan instinctively stepped in front of Luna. The investigators emerged from the forest, raising their tranquilizer rifles. One officer frowned. "Ethan?" "What are you doing out here?" Ethan didn't move. "I'm hiking." The officer looked past him toward the bridge. "Who were you talking to?" Ethan hesitated for only a second. "No one." Luna had already slipped behind one of the ancient stone pillars, hidden from human sight. The officer wasn't convinced. "We've received reports of suspicious activity." "We're searching the entire forest." Ethan forced himself to remain calm. "You won't find anything except trees." The officer studied him for another moment before lowering his rifle. "If you see anything unusual..." "Report it immediately." Ethan nodded. "I will." The search team continued deeper into the forest. Only after they disappeared did Luna step back onto the bridge. Their eyes met. Both understood how close they had come to disaster. Hidden high among the trees, the masked guardian watched the encounter unfold. Another guardian stepped beside them. "The hunters are getting closer." The masked figure nodded. "They're being guided." "By whom?" The guardian's blue eyes narrowed. "Someone who wants the truth buried forever." That evening, Luna returned to Blackwood Territory carrying Marcus Ashwood's journal. Dominic took it carefully, his hands trembling as he recognized the familiar leather cover. "I thought this was lost forever." He opened it slowly. A folded letter slipped onto the table. No one had noticed it hidden between the pages. Dominic unfolded it. His expression drained of color. Kai stepped closer. "What is it?" Dominic looked at Luna. "This letter..." "...was written after the war." He swallowed hard. "And it names the person responsible for destroying the Peace Accord." Silence filled the council hall. Outside, storm clouds gathered over the forest. Somewhere beyond the trees, that same person—or someone connected to them—had begun moving once again. The truth was finally within reach. But so was the enemy.
