Chapter 3: The Man Who Feared Wolves

1764 Words
The morning after the council meeting, an uneasy silence settled over Blackwood Territory. Luna woke before sunrise. Sleep had come in short, restless moments. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the silver mask, the stranger's piercing blue eyes, and the ancient coin resting in her palm. She sat on the edge of her bed, absentmindedly rubbing her thumb across the crescent moon engraved on the coin. The words echoed through her mind. The Moon has not forgotten its silent daughter. She still didn't understand what they meant. A gentle knock came at her bedroom door. Three slow taps. Kai. She smiled to herself. No one else knocked that way. Opening the door, she found him holding two steaming mugs. He grinned. Thought you skipped breakfast again. Luna laughed silently before accepting one of the mugs. The warm scent of herbal tea drifted upward. One thing she loved about Kai was that he always remembered the little things. She signed her thanks. He shrugged. Someone has to make sure our future Alpha doesn't starve. Luna rolled her eyes dramatically. I'm not becoming Alpha. Kai raised an eyebrow. You know the elders expect it someday. She sighed. Ever since Dominic had taken her in, whispers had followed her everywhere. Some believed she would inherit Blackwood because she was the daughter of Alpha Marcus. Others believed the prophecy made it inevitable. Luna wanted neither. She wanted peace. She wanted choice. Most of all... She wanted a life that belonged to her. Kai noticed the distant look in her eyes. You're thinking about the stranger again. She nodded. Then reached into her pocket and removed the silver coin. Morning sunlight reflected off its surface. Kai studied it carefully. "I spent half the night searching the archives," he admitted before signing the words again. Luna's eyes widened. Did you find anything? He nodded slowly. Not much. Kai rubbed the back of his neck, clearly frustrated. "I searched every shelf in the archive," he signed. "Some of the books were so old they crumbled when I opened them. I found records of Alpha bloodlines, ancient wars, and even treaties with neighboring packs." Luna watched him carefully. "But every time I found a reference to the Moon Keepers, the pages ended abruptly." He shook his head. "It wasn't age that destroyed them. Someone removed them on purpose." Luna frowned. Who would do that? Kai shrugged. "I don't know. Whatever was written there must have been important enough for someone to erase it." She lowered her gaze to the silver coin resting in her hand. The engraved crescent shimmered in the morning light. It looked ordinary. Yet it carried enough weight to make Alpha Dominic lose the color in his face. Her fingers closed around it. Questions filled her mind. Who had the masked stranger been? Why had they chosen her? And what had the Moon Keepers wanted with the daughter of two fallen wolves? Her wolf stirred uneasily. The answers are coming. Luna wasn't sure whether that thought comforted her or frightened her. His expression darkened. Every record mentioning the Moon Keepers ends the same way. Missing pages. Luna frowned. Missing? Kai nodded. Someone deliberately removed them years ago. A chill settled over her. Who would erase an entire history? And why? Before either of them could continue, another wolf hurried across the courtyard. It was one of the patrol captains. His face was unusually tense. "The Alpha wants everyone at the northern border." Kai immediately translated into sign language. Luna frowned. Did something happen? The captain swallowed. "We found footprints again." "They lead toward the human lands." Miles beyond Blackwood Territory, Ethan Carter slammed the hood of his old pickup truck shut. It refused to start. Again. He muttered under his breath before wiping grease from his hands. Living alone on the edge of Pine Ridge Forest wasn't glamorous. His cabin had belonged to his father. After his father's death three years earlier, Ethan had stayed. Not because he loved the isolation. Because leaving felt like abandoning the only family he had left. He glanced toward the endless wall of trees stretching across the horizon. His father had spent decades warning him about the forest. "Never go too deep." "Some things out there aren't animals." "If you ever see a wolf..." "Run." As a boy, Ethan had laughed at those stories. As an adult... He wasn't so sure. Too many strange things happened near Pine Ridge. Livestock disappeared. Hunters returned terrified. People whispered about enormous wolves that walked like men. Ethan didn't believe everything he heard. But he believed enough to stay away. A loud engine interrupted his thoughts. A forest ranger's truck pulled into the driveway. Ethan recognized the driver immediately. Officer Grace Miller. She climbed out carrying a folder. "Morning." Ethan smiled politely. "Morning." Grace held up the folder. "Three more hikers reported seeing oversized wolf tracks near the reserve." Ethan frowned. "Probably bears." Grace shook her head. "Bears don't leave tracks that suddenly disappear." She hesitated. "You're still setting up cameras in the forest, aren't you?" Ethan nodded. Wildlife photography had become both his job and his escape after his father's death. "I check them every week." Grace folded her arms. "If you find anything unusual..." She paused. "Call me." "I will." As she drove away, Ethan looked back toward the forest. For reasons he couldn't explain... He felt as though something inside those trees was watching him. And this time... It wasn't hiding. The northern border stretched for miles, marked only by dense forest and a narrow river separating Blackwood Territory from the human world. Luna arrived with Kai just as Alpha Dominic finished speaking with the patrol captain. Several warriors stood nearby, studying the ground. Dominic noticed Luna and motioned for her to come closer. "We found them here," he said before repeating the message in sign language. Luna crouched beside the fresh footprints. They were human. Large. Deeply pressed into the damp earth. She carefully examined the trail, running her fingers over the impressions. Whoever had made them hadn't been trying to hide. That alone was unusual. She looked up at Dominic. Hunters? she signed. He shook his head. "No weapons. No campfire. No signs of a struggle." Kai folded his arms. "So why come this close to pack territory?" No one had an answer. Luna followed the trail toward the riverbank. The footprints stopped at the water's edge, as though the stranger had simply vanished. Her wolf stirred uneasily. Someone is watching. Luna slowly lifted her head. Across the river, hidden among the trees, stood a man. He wore a dark jacket and carried binoculars around his neck. The moment their eyes met, he froze. For several heartbeats, neither of them moved. Luna noticed surprise flash across his face. Then fear. He stumbled backward. Turning on his heel, he disappeared into the forest. Kai hurried to her side. What happened? Luna pointed across the river. A human. Kai narrowed his eyes but saw nothing. "Did he see you?" She nodded. Dominic's expression hardened. "No one crosses the river without permission." Luna looked back toward the empty trees. Something about the man lingered in her thoughts. He hadn't looked like a hunter. He had looked... Lost. Ethan didn't stop running until he reached his truck. His heart pounded against his ribs. He leaned heavily against the driver's door, trying to steady his breathing. The woman by the river... She wasn't supposed to be there. She had appeared so quietly that he hadn't noticed her until she was watching him. There had been something different about her. She hadn't threatened him. Hadn't chased him. She had simply looked at him with calm, silver-gray eyes. Yet those eyes unsettled him more than any growling wolf ever could. He climbed into the truck and gripped the steering wheel. "Get a grip," he muttered. She was probably just another hiker. Still... Something didn't feel right. As he started the engine, his gaze drifted toward the camera bag on the passenger seat. One of the motion-activated cameras near the river should have captured whoever had been walking through the area. Maybe it would explain everything. Or prove he was imagining things. Back in Blackwood Territory, Dominic dismissed most of the patrol, leaving only Luna and Kai behind. "There is something I didn't tell the council." He repeated the words in sign language. Luna's expression tightened. Dominic reached inside his coat and removed a worn leather journal. "The journal belonged to your father." Luna's breath caught. She had never seen it before. "I found it after the war," Dominic admitted. "I believed it contained only battle reports." He opened it carefully. "But last night I read every page." He stopped near the end. "There was one entry your father never shared." Luna stepped closer. Dominic handed her the journal. Written in Marcus Ashwood's familiar handwriting were the final lines: If the Moon Keepers ever return, protect Luna at all costs. She will become the bridge between two worlds. Luna stared at the words. Her hands trembled. The bridge between two worlds? She looked at Dominic. What does that mean? He slowly shook his head. "I don't know." "But your father believed it enough to write it with his final entry." Kai swallowed. "Two worlds..." "The wolves and the humans?" Dominic didn't answer. The possibility hung heavily between them. Luna closed the journal and held it against her chest. For the first time, she wondered if her desire for a human mate had never truly been her own. What if the Moon Goddess had been guiding her heart all along? Before anyone could speak again, a howl echoed across the valley. The border patrol. A signal. An intruder. Every warrior sprang into motion. Dominic's eyes hardened. "They're back." Luna's wolf surged forward eagerly. Whatever had been hiding in the shadows was finally making its move. Far beyond the trees, Ethan slowed his truck as a massive gray wolf stepped onto the lonely forest road ahead. It stood perfectly still, its golden eyes fixed on him. Ethan's blood ran cold. His father's warning echoed in his mind. "If you ever see a wolf..." "Run." The wolf took one slow step toward the truck. Ethan slammed his foot on the accelerator. Gravel flew behind him as the truck sped down the road. The wolf never chased him. It simply watched him disappear. High above the forest, the full moon slipped behind a curtain of clouds. Darkness settled over both territories. And somewhere within it, unseen eyes continued watching Luna... and Ethan.
