Maybe he could help her find a way out of this mess.
"Can I talk to Alex?" Marie asked, feeling a glimmer of hope. "Maybe he can help me figure something out."
Emily nodded. "I'll call him right now."
As Emily pulled out her phone, Marie felt a sense of determination wash over her. She was going to fight this arranged marriage, no matter what it took.
Alex arrived at the coffee shop 20 minutes later, looking concerned. "Hey, Marie, what's going on?" he asked, sitting down next to her.
Marie explained everything again, feeling a sense of relief that she had someone to turn to. Alex listened intently, his expression growing more and more serious.
"I think I can help you," Alex said when Marie finished. "But we need to act fast. Once the announcement is made, it's going to be harder to get out of the marriage."
Marie nodded, feeling a surge of hope. "What can we do?"
Alex pulled out his phone and started typing away. "I'm going to make a few calls, see what I can find out about Mr. Tyson and your parents' debt."
Marie waited anxiously as Alex made his calls. After what felt like an eternity, he finally hung up and turned to her.
"Okay, here's what I found out," Alex said. "Mr. Tyson is a wealthy businessman with a lot of connections. But he's also got a reputation for being ruthless. If you marry him, you'll be trapped."
Marie felt a chill run down her spine. She knew she had to get out of this marriage, no matter what it took.
"What can I do?" Marie asked, feeling desperate.
Alex thought for a moment. "I think I can help you find a way to pay off your parents' debt without marrying Mr. Tyson. But it's going to take some time."
Marie nodded, feeling a sense of determination. She was willing to do whatever it took to escape this arranged marriage.
Marie's mind was racing as she tried to process the information Alex had just given her. She couldn't believe her parents had gotten themselves into such a mess.
"How much do they owe?" Marie asked, feeling a sense of trepidation.
Alex hesitated before answering. "It's a lot, Marie. They owe Mr. Tyson over a million dollars."
Marie felt like she had been punched in the gut. A million dollars? How were they ever going to pay that back?
"What can we do?" Marie asked, feeling desperate.
Alex thought for a moment. "I think I can help you come up with a plan to pay off the debt, but it's going to take some time. And in the meantime, you need to stall the engagement."
Marie nodded, feeling a sense of determination. She was going to get out of this arranged marriage, no matter what it took.
"Okay, I'll stall the engagement," Marie said. "But what about Mr. Tyson? He's not going to just wait around for me to make up my mind."
Alex's expression turned serious. "That's true. Mr. Tyson is not a patient man. We need to be careful."
Marie felt a chill run down her spine. She knew she was taking a risk by trying to escape this arranged marriage, but she was willing to do whatever it took to be free.
Marie took a deep breath and stood up. "I'll go talk to my parents," she said. "I'll try to stall the engagement."
Alex nodded. "Be careful, Marie. Remember, Mr. Tyson is not a man to be trifled with."
Marie nodded and left the coffee shop, her heart racing with anticipation. She knew this wasn't going to be easy, but she was determined to try.
When she arrived home, her parents were in the living room, smiling and chatting like they didn't have a care in the world.
"Marie, dear, we're so glad you're home," her mother said, beaming. "We have some wonderful news to share with you."
Marie's heart sank. She knew what was coming.
"What is it?" Marie asked, trying to sound nonchalant.
"We've set a date for the engagement party," her father rsaid, his eyes shining with excitement. "It's going to be next weekend!"
Marie felt like she had been punched in the gut. Next weekend? That was so soon!
"Uh, congratulations," Marie said, trying to stall. "But can't we wait a bit longer? I'm not sure I'm ready for this."
Her parents exchanged a glance, and for a moment, Marie saw a flicker of doubt in their eyes.
But then her father's expression hardened. "No, Marie. We can't wait. Mr. Tyson is eager to move forward, and we can't keep him waiting."
Marie knew she had to think fast. She couldn't let them railroad her into this marriage.
"Okay, fine," Marie said, trying to sound resigned. "But can I at least meet Mr. Tyson before the engagement party? I want to make sure we're compatible."
Her parents exchanged another glance, and this time, Marie saw a hint of uncertainty.
"Okay, dear," her mother said finally. "We'll arrange a meeting. But don't think about trying to back out now. This is happening, Marie."
Marie nodded, feeling a sense of relief. She had bought herself some time, at least. Now she just had to figure out what to do next...
Marie's mind was racing as she went to her room. She knew she had to come up with a plan, and fast. She couldn't just sit back and let her parents marry her off to some stranger.
As she sat on her bed, trying to think, Marie's phone buzzed. It was Alex.
"Hey, how did it go?" Alex asked.
Marie filled him in on the conversation with her parents. Alex listened intently, then said, "Okay, here's what we're going to do. I'll start digging into Mr. Tyson's background, see if I can find anything we can use to get you out of this marriage."
Marie felt a surge of gratitude towards Alex. She knew she couldn't do this alone.
"Thanks, Alex," Marie said. "I don't know what I'd do without you."
"Don't worry, we'll get through this together," Alex said. "But in the meantime, you need to be careful. Mr. Tyson is not a man to be trusted."
Marie nodded, even though Alex couldn't see her. She knew she had to be careful. She was playing with fire here.
The next day, Marie's parents took her to meet Mr. Tyson. Marie was nervous, but she tried to stay calm. She knew she had to keep up appearances, at least for now.
As they arrived at Mr. Tyson's mansion, Marie's heart sank. This was it. This was her future.
But as she met Mr. Tyson, Marie felt a surprise. He wasn't what she had expected. He was charming, handsome, and seemed genuinely interested in getting to know her.
Marie found herself feeling drawn to him, despite herself. Maybe this marriage wouldn't be so bad after all...
But then she remembered Alex's warning. Mr. Tyson was not a man to be trusted. Marie knew she had to keep her guard up.
As Marie spent more time with Mr. Tyson, she couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off.
