Chapter 7Adrian When I get off the bus on Monday morning, Nikos is already there, waiting for me. His smile is enchanting. “I didn’t want to bump into you first thing in front of everyone else,” he says apologetically after we have incredibly awkwardly wished each other a good morning. “That’s sweet of you,” I smile. I had wanted to say considerate but apparently my mouth has a mind of its own. And since my words make him blush, I don’t regret them, nor do I feel the need to apologize for them. We walk to the school in companionable silence, and he even makes us both a cup of tea before the lessons begin. I’m just outside my classroom, greeting the students and making conversation with the parents, when he walks by again. I want to smile at him, despite the brouhaha going on around me
