I realized I was saying too much, so I quickly reached for my water and took a sip, hoping I hadn’t repulsed or angered Everly. When she didn’t say anything, I cautiously looked up, only to be surprised by what I saw. There was no disgust in her eyes. No, there was pure, burning desire. It made me squirm in my seat, heat rushing through my body, and yet I didn’t know how to respond to it.
“S-Shouldn’t we eat a little?” I asked, desperate to focus on something else.
Slowly, Everly nodded. Her fingers played with the stem of her wineglass, turning it lazily, the movement almost mesmerizing.
“I wasn’t sure what you liked or whether you might be vegetarian, so I prepared a few different things so you could choose,” she explained.
