KANE Her footsteps echoed on the stairs, and when I looked up, whatever I'd been about to say died somewhere in my throat. She stood in the doorway in a red gown, the color doing something unfair to her skin, her lips painted to match. For one absurd second, all I could think about was closing the distance and finding out if that lipstick tasted like anything at all. I cleared my throat instead, taking her hand and pressing a kiss to her cheek. "You look exceptional," I said. "Thank you." She said it flatly, already pulling her hand back.
