The sun was thick, casting its golden glow into the living room where Amaya and her younger sister Judy sat side by side on the cosy sofa. They were both occupied with their pet cat, Pouf, a plump tabby with an attitude of quiet dominance. Pouf lay sprawled lazily between them, occasionally batting at the loose string from one of the sofa cushions. The girls were idly petting him, their attention divided between their pet and the wafting aroma of their mother’s chicken adobo cooking in the kitchen. Judy’s nose twitched as she took in a deeper breath. The unmistakable scent of soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and slow-cooking chicken filled the air. It was intoxicating. She closed her eyes and sighed dramatically. “Mom, can you just not make it too yummy? I might eat the whole lot!” she called
