As the Winter Dance drew nearer, the partnership between Lena and James became more natural. They were no longer just students working on a project; they were two people who genuinely enjoyed each other’s company. Their teasing had become more playful, their discussions more open. Lena found herself laughing more than she ever had around James, and James discovered a side of Lena that was witty, sharp, and full of life. Lena was practically the girl he wanted to marry but couldn't accept that particular fact.
One evening, as they put the final touches on the decorations, James looked at Lena, a soft smile playing on his lips. “You know, I never thought I’d say this, but I think we make a pretty good team.”
Lena glanced up from the decorations, her heart unexpectedly racing. “Yeah, I guess we do.”
The warmth between them was undeniable now. They had gone from bitter rivals to reluctant collaborators, and now, something more was beginning to blossom between them. Past Lena would've killed the present Lena for even sitting beside him but look how the tables had turned.
Lena found herself wondering if this was just a temporary shift, or if there was something more to this connection.
