The day had ended in a strange silence after Lucas walked away. Margaret had continued with my training, pushing me to the brink of exhaustion, but my mind was elsewhere, caught in a whirlpool of thoughts I wasn’t sure how to navigate. I didn’t know how to handle this newfound power, how to reconcile being a human who had awakened as something far more dangerous. I certainly didn’t know how to keep everyone from discovering what I was—especially Lucas. But that didn’t stop him from digging deeper. As the evening rolled in, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was brewing. I had already showered and tried to relax, but the thoughts were relentless. And then my phone buzzed. I looked down, expecting a message from Margaret, maybe a reminder of tomorrow’s training. But it wasn’t her.
