Chapter 12 – No More Lies

639 Words
The sound of the door closing was deafening in its quiet. Daniel stood motionless in the living room, his shoulders still taut from the fight that never happened. Whoever had entered had left without a word — but not without leaving their mark. Elena stepped out from the bedroom doorway, her voice trembling. “Was that… them?” Daniel didn’t turn immediately. He kept his eyes on the door as if expecting it to open again. “Yes,” he said finally. “And it means we’re out of time.” Her pulse quickened. “Out of time for what?” He faced her then, and for the first time, she saw the man beneath the charming smiles and quiet confidence. This Daniel looked older, sharper, stripped of pretense. “For me to keep pretending I can protect you without telling you the truth.” He motioned for her to sit. She didn’t — not yet. She needed to see his eyes for this. “I wasn’t always in real estate,” he began. “Five years ago, I worked for a man named Victor Hale. He wasn’t a businessman in the way you think. He ran a network — contracts, deals, favors for people who wanted results they couldn’t get legally.” Her chest tightened. “You were part of that?” “I was good at it. Too good,” he said bitterly. “I handled the logistics — moving money, arranging… disappearances. At first, it didn’t bother me. I told myself I was just managing numbers. But then I saw what those numbers meant. The people they destroyed.” She wanted to look away, but she forced herself to hold his gaze. “One job went wrong,” he continued. “A target was supposed to vanish quietly. Instead, she came to me — begging for her life. She had proof of Victor’s operations, and she handed it over in exchange for my help to disappear.” Elena swallowed. “And you helped her.” “Yes. And I kept a copy of what she gave me. That’s what they want back. With it, Victor’s entire empire crumbles — and he knows it.” The pieces clicked in her mind. “So that’s why your ex showed up. They’re using her to get to you.” Daniel nodded slowly. “And now, they’re watching you too. Which means—” He took a step toward her, his voice tightening — “—you’re not safe unless you’re with me.” Her breath caught. There was fear in his words, but also something else — something raw and desperate. “Daniel…” He closed the space between them. “I should tell you to walk away. That would be the right thing. But I can’t. I don’t want to.” The air between them charged like static before a storm. She felt the weight of his confession settle over them — not as a barrier, but as a bridge. She reached up, brushing her fingers against his jaw. “Then don’t tell me to walk away.” His hand slid to the back of her neck, pulling her in, and the kiss that followed was nothing like the others. This wasn’t playful or teasing. This was urgent — a collision of fear and longing and the knowledge that tomorrow wasn’t guaranteed. When they finally broke apart, his forehead rested against hers. “No more lies, Elena. From here on, you know everything. That means you’re part of this fight, whether I want you to be or not.” She nodded, her voice steady despite the rapid beat of her heart. “Then we fight together.” Somewhere deep in the city, a clock tower struck midnight. And in that moment, Daniel knew there was no turning back.
