Chapter Twelve The stench in the tiny trailer made her nauseous. How can people live like this, Rebecca asked herself. And what is that smell? One source was probably laying at her feet, drooling on the floor, but even a clean Roscoe wouldn’t clear this air. Jim’s leg might be infected, but there was something rotten in here, probably in the tiny dorm fridge that Jim opened when he offered her a Dos Equis. She declined the beer and began to explain the visit from the lawyer to her father’s farm. She and Jim had stayed in touch after the accident on the horse path. They both knew that they would have to be allies in a big fight if that line of white stakes through the woods turned out to be what she was afraid they were. She told Jim everything the lawyer had said and drew a rough map
