VANESSA’S POV
It was in the evening as the sunset cast a warm glow over the neatly manicured lawn of my family’s estate, the Briggs Estate. I sat in the living room anxiously waiting for my parents.
I had told them I wanted to discuss something important with them today. I wanted to discuss with my parents the possibility of bringing Jason into the new subsidiary we wanted to start.
My parents entered the room, they had been having meetings. My family was one of the busiest families due to the nature of our business and because the major cities are building a lot of roads, buildings, and wonderful engineering edifices.
The air around me changed and I felt that it was charged with my anticipation when I rose to greet both of them as they settled into their seats. My dad’s eyes were constantly fixed on me. He always does that when he expects something from me.
“Hello Dad, Hello Mum. Welcome home, hope you had a great day at the office today,” I said.
“Good day Vanny, you wanted to speak to us. You ordered us here,” My Dad said with so much seriousness that you would think I was his assistant or secretary.
“Come on, Dad, why are you sounding so official? You are at home. Please try and relax your mind a little bit,” I said. I did not find his countenance funny at all.
“Okay, I am so sorry sweetheart, so don’t mind me,” Daddy said.
I took a deep, ready to broach the topic that had been consuming my thoughts. I had spoken to my Dad about the new subsidiary I wanted us to start. The Engineering Innovation and Manufacturing arm of our business. He had laughed it off, but to please me he had asked me to start it off. I had started it and we were growing at a very fast rate.
"Mom, Dad, as I said earlier, there's something important I want to talk to you about," I began, my eyes darting between my parents.
My father, Mr. Briggs, a distinguished man with graying hair and an air of authority, raised an eyebrow and said, "Go on, Vanny. You've got our attention," he said.
I hesitated for a moment before diving into the subject. I was not sure how they would take it but I was going to give it a shot anyway,
"I met someone recently, someone I think could be a valuable addition to the company. His name is Jason, and I'd like you both to consider giving him a chance," I said.
My Mom, a graceful woman with a warm smile, leaned forward with interest. "Jason? Do you think he is a potential candidate for a job at the firm?"
I nodded, my eyes alight with enthusiasm.
"Yes, Mom. He's got a great background and skills that could really benefit us. I've seen him in action, and I believe he could bring a fresh perspective to the team."
My Dad exchanged a glance with his wife, a thoughtful expression on his face.
"Vanny, you've never been this eager about bringing someone new on board. What makes Jason different?" He asked.
I took a moment so as to choose my words carefully. "Dad, I think he has the drive, the vision, and the skills that align with where the company is heading. I've never been more certain about someone's potential to make a significant impact." I said, hoping he will consider my request.
“Okay, so if you feel he is capable and has such skills, why don’t you want him to go through the recruitment process of the firm? You know, Vanny, we have a process and I do not want to be seen as cutting corners,” My Dad said.
“Dad, I want to employ him as a senior executive to work with me and I have asked him to come with his pitch and inventions,” I said.
My father's surprise was obvious. I had always been focused on my work, but this level of interest in a potential hire was unprecedented. Dad leaned back in his chair, studying me with a mixture of curiosity and skepticism.
"Why are you so invested in this, Vanessa?" Dad asked, his tone a mix of paternal concern and professional curiosity.
I took a deep breath, deciding to be honest with my parents. "I see a lot of potential in Jason, not just professionally. I believe he could bring something special to the company, and I want to give him the chance to prove it." I said.
“This is the more reason he needs to go through the proper channel and bit what you are proposing Vanny. What do you think sweetheart?” My Dad said, turning towards my Mom.
“I agree with you, honey, but if he was to bring his credentials and also get the pitch done before the Board of Directors and Senior Executives, then it is also acceptable,” My Mom said.
“Yes Dad, why do I want to go through the long process of recruitment when I can get it done in a shortened process without breaking any rules,” I said.
Mrs. Briggs smiled knowingly, sensing that there was more to Vanessa's enthusiasm than she was letting on.
"Is there something else, dear? You seem particularly eager about Jason joining the team," Dad said.
I hesitated, choosing my words carefully. "Well, I also think we could work well together. His skills complement mine, and I can see us achieving great things for the company," I said.
My parents exchanged glances again, silently communicating their thoughts. After a moment of contemplation, my Dad spoke. "All right, Vanny. We'll consider Jason for a position in the firm. But, I want to be on the panel that hears his pitch. I want to understand why you're so confident in him," he said.
A surge of gratitude and relief washed over me. I was so happy that they accepted my request. I just have to get Jason to prepare very well for this because Dad will be there.
"Thank you, Dad. I really appreciate it. I'll make sure Jason is well-prepared for the pitch.." I said, as I knew convincing my father to have Jason present his pitch was a significant step, and I could not afford any missteps.
.
Alone in my room, I allowed my thoughts to drift back to Jason. I could not deny the underlying attraction I felt towards him. His confidence, his charm, and the way he carried himself captivated me from the start. I envisioned the two of us working side by side, navigating the challenges of the business world together.
I was happy and glad that Mark had introduced Jason to me. I was captivated by his pitch. Why did other companies not see this potential I saw? I asked myself so many times.
It looked like he had done that pitch over a thousand times. But, moreover, I was captivated by his looks. ‘Damn Jason was fine’ I thought to myself.
Unable to contain my anticipation, I reached for my phone and dialed Jason's number. As the call connected, I could feel my heart racing. When Jason's warm voice greeted her, I couldn't help but smile.
"Hello, Jason. It's Vanessa. I wanted to talk to you about the pitch," I said.
Jason's voice held a hint of excitement. "Of course, Vanessa. I've been working on it. I want to make sure it's impressive," Jason said.
"I'm glad to hear that," I replied. "My dad has agreed to be on the panel that hears your pitch. It's a big opportunity, so make sure you're well prepared," I said.
"Oh, that would not be a problem. I am sure I can do great with or without his presence. I have waited for this opportunity all my life and I am not ready to lose this one,” Jason said.
Jason expressed his gratitude, assuring me that he would give his best. The conversation flowed effortlessly as we discussed the details of the upcoming presentation, and I found myself drawn to Jason's passion and determination.
"Vanessa, I really appreciate all the effort you're putting into this. It means a lot to me," Jason said.
I couldn't suppress the genuine warmth in my voice. "Jason, I believe in what we can achieve together if you get this job. Let's make it happen. I want you to know that you have a special place in my heart. If you need anything, please do not hesitate to let me know."
Could this be love at first sight or am I daydreaming? I just expressed my feelings for a total stranger I met today.
