The streets grew quieter the deeper they moved into the older part of the city. Buildings leaned slightly over the narrow road, their windows dark and lifeless. The morning sun struggled to reach the ground, leaving long shadows stretching between them.
Kai didn’t like it.
The pendant rested beneath his jacket, warm against his chest. It hadn’t cooled since they left the shop, and that made him uneasy. He walked beside Ren while Mira stayed behind them, scanning rooftops and alleyways.
“You feel that?” Kai asked quietly.
Ren nodded without looking at him. “They’re close.”
Mira stopped walking for a moment, her gaze sharpening. “Too quiet.”
Kai swallowed. That never meant anything good.
They turned into a narrow street, barely wide enough for two people to walk side by side. The air felt heavier here, like the world was holding its breath.
Then it happened.
Three figures dropped from above.
Kai barely had time to react before one landed directly in front of him. Red eyes glowed beneath dark masks, and blades flashed in the dim light.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Kai muttered.
Ren stepped forward instantly, blocking the first strike. Steel clashed, the sharp sound echoing down the street. Mira darted to the side, moving quickly as she struck another hunter before he could regain balance.
Kai backed away, heart racing.
The pendant burned.
He felt the surge again — dark energy flowing through him, stronger than before. His fingers trembled slightly as he raised his hand.
The nearest hunter lunged.
Kai pushed forward instinctively.
A wave of dark energy burst outward, slamming the hunter into the wall. Dust scattered into the air as the man collapsed.
Mira glanced at him briefly. “You’re getting better.”
Kai wasn’t sure if that was reassuring.
The final hunter moved toward Ren, attacking faster than the others. Ren blocked twice, then shifted his stance and disarmed him with a quick motion. The blade clattered to the ground, and seconds later, the hunter followed.
Silence returned.
Kai exhaled slowly, lowering his hand.
“I’m starting to hate this,” he said.
Ren scanned the rooftops again. “They’re getting more aggressive.”
Mira nodded. “They’re not testing anymore.”
Kai frowned. “What does that mean?”
Ren looked at him, expression serious.
“It means they want you alive.”
Kai swallowed.
“That sounds worse.”
Mira gave a small smile. “It is.”
Kai ran a hand through his hair, trying to calm his thoughts. The hunters weren’t slowing down. If anything, they were becoming more determined.
And that meant something bigger was coming.
Ren stepped forward.
“We should move.”
Kai nodded quietly.
But as they walked away, he couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning.
