CHAPTER FIFTEEN — THE THIN EDGE OF FATE.

702 Words
The wind in the crystalline forest had stopped. Not slowed. Stopped. Annastasia felt it first, that terrifying stillness that only happened when the Veil between realms thinned to a thread. Even Kael felt it. His spine straightened, his hand resting lightly near his blade, not because he expected a fight, but because something ancient was waking. Daegyryn was the one who confirmed it. His eyes darkened like a star collapsing into itself. “Something is watching her.” Kael moved instantly, stepping between Annastasia and the shimmering trees. “From where?” Daegyryn didn’t answer. He was listening, not to sound, but to the realm itself. Threads of energy swirled around Annastasia like golden ribbons she couldn’t see, bending toward her, calling to her. “She’s crossing into resonance.” Daegyryn finally said. “She’s starting to match the frequency of her mother.” Annastasia’s heart jumped. “My mother is alive?” “I didn’t say that.” Daegyryn stepped closer. “But your essence is aligning with hers. That only happens when fate prepares a reunion… or a confrontation.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “She’s not ready.” Daegyryn turned to him slowly, amusement flickering in his eyes. “She’s becoming more than ready. You’re the one who’s afraid.” Kael didn’t snap back this time. Because Daegyryn was right. Annastasia squeezed Kael’s hand. “I’m not leaving either of you.” Daegyryn laughed softly. “You don’t have a choice. Fate is choosing for you.” ⸻ THE SUMMONING The air tore. Not violently, delicately, like silk being parted by invisible fingers. A narrow slit of light appeared in front of Annastasia, humming with a warm, familiar pulse. Kael pulled her back instinctively. Daegyryn didn’t. “That energy…” Annastasia whispered. “It’s the same from the Vision Hall. It felt like… like her.” Kael’s grip tightened. “Annastasia, do NOT step forward.” A voice, soft, gentle, echoing, drifted through the glowing seam. “My child…” Her breath caught. Her knees nearly buckled. “Mother…?” Kael stepped in front of her, panic rising in him like a storm. “This could be a trap. It could be a mimic. It could be—” “It’s not a trap,” Daegyryn cut in, his tone surprisingly solemn. “And she’s the only one who can hear it clearly. That alone tells us the voice is tied to her bloodline.” Annastasia was shaking. The slit of light widened a fraction, releasing a warm wave that washed over her like a memory she had never lived but somehow recognized. “Kael…” she whispered. “I have to go.” Kael turned to her, eyes blazing with fear he rarely showed. “If you step through that light, I can’t follow you. And if anything happens to you—” Daegyryn placed a hand on Kael’s shoulder. “She won’t be alone.” Kael snapped, “You can’t go either!” Daegyryn’s smirk returned. “I wasn’t asking permission.” ⸻ THE DECISION Annastasia stood between two worlds. Behind her: Kael, the man who would burn the universe for her. In front of her: the glowing seam calling her like a heartbeat she’d always been meant to return to. Beside her: Daegyryn, the shadow-guide bound to her destiny whether Kael liked it or not. Her chest rose and fell. “I can feel her. She’s afraid. She’s waiting.” Kael stepped closer, his forehead touching hers, his voice breaking for the first time since she’d known him. “Please… come back to me.” Annastasia smiled sadly. “I always do.” She took Daegyryn’s hand. And stepped into the light. Kael was left reaching for her, a second too late. The seam snapped shut. The wind rushed back through the forest in a violent spiral, bending trees, shaking the earth, and Kael collapsed to his knees, breathless. “She’s gone,” he whispered. “No,” a voice echoed behind him. Kael jerked around. A shadowy silhouette stood there… glowing faintly with the same golden essence Annastasia had carried. “She’s not gone,” it said. “She’s exactly where she needs to be.”
