CHAPTER FOUR — THROUGH THE HUNTERS VEIL.

850 Words
The Hunters did not arrive with footsteps. They arrived with silence, a silence so heavy it bent gravity. Annastasia felt the air thicken around her lungs as if the universe itself was holding its breath. The Echo positioned itself in front of her, its formless cloak expanding into a shimmering barrier of dark light. Kael took her wrist, not roughly, not even urgently, but firmly enough that she felt his pulse pressed against her skin. “Stay close,” he murmured. She did. The corridor darkened at the far end as three figures emerged from the void, tall, armored, their bodies humming with predatory energy. Their movements were too smooth, too synchronized to be human. Kael’s hand dropped to the hilt of the starlight blade at his hip, the weapon shimmering like frozen lightning. Annastasia whispered, “Who are they really?” “Trackers of celestial blood,” Kael said through clenched teeth. “They hunt those born with starline signatures.” His gaze flicked to her. “You.” Her stomach dropped. “But I don’t have—” “You do.” His voice deepened, softened, anchored. “I sensed it the moment you touched my mind.” Time seemed to fold around them. Kael stepped in front of her now, the same way the Echo shielded them from behind. She was boxed in, not trapped, but protected by two beings who clearly knew more about her blood than she ever had. One of the Hunters raised a hand, and space rippled outward, distorting like heat waves on metal. Annastasia whispered, “Kael… what do they want with me?” His jaw clenched. “To return you to whoever marked your bloodline. To a throne you’ve never known.” Her pulse spiked. Celestial heirs. The Echo bowing to her. Her aura touching Kael’s. Pieces clicking together. “You think I’m—” “I don’t think,” Kael said softly, eyes burning bright. “I know.” Before she could speak, the Hunters attacked. A shockwave slammed through the corridor, shattering the star-windows. Kael pulled her against his chest, twisting with supernatural agility as debris flew past them. His hair whipped around them in dark silver arcs, brushing her cheek. Her heart stuttered. He smelled like cold stars and adrenaline. “Hold onto me,” he said. She did, arms around his waist, pressing into the heat of his body. Kael surged forward in a burst of movement, faster than gravity, faster than she could track. His blade collided with the Hunter’s spear in a burst of white-blue sparks. The Echo expanded its cloak, forming a bubble around Annastasia just as a second Hunter struck from behind. The blow ricocheted off the Echo’s shield, but the impact shook the entire station. Annastasia cried out. “Kael!” He didn’t look at her, but she felt him, felt the echo of his mind brushing hers again. I’m here. Not a command this time. A promise. Her knees weakened. The Hunters circled them like wolves. Kael fought with a brutal grace she had only glimpsed before, his movements a dance of shadows and star-fire, his blade trailing ribbons of light. But the Hunters were multiplying. Three became five. Five became nine. Kael’s breath grew heavier. The Echo flickered, struggling to maintain its shield. Annastasia felt something hot and fierce ignite inside her chest, fear and defiance woven together like twin flames. “I won’t be dragged anywhere,” she whispered. And then, Her body glowed. Soft at first. Then brighter. Then blinding. The light burst from her palms, from her spine, from the hollow of her throat where Kael’s necklace rested. Energy roared through the corridor like a sun waking inside her. Kael froze mid-strike. The Echo stilled. The Hunters stumbled back as if struck by invisible force. Annastasia hovered inches off the ground, hair lifting, eyes turning white-gold, her heartbeat syncing with the pulse of the stars themselves. Kael whispered her name like a prayer. “Annastasia…” The light faded as quickly as it came. She collapsed, straight into Kael’s arms. He caught her effortlessly, lowering her gently to the ground. His face was inches from hers, eyes soft and burning. “You are not human,” he whispered, awe-struck. “You are celestial-born… and you are awakening.” Annastasia’s voice trembled. “Kael… I’m scared.” He cupped her cheek with a hand warm from battle. “Don’t be,” he breathed. “I would cross galaxies to protect you.” Her pulse skipped. The Echo floated closer, spreading its cloak around both of them, shielding them from the retreating Hunters who now watched from afar, hesitant, unsure. Kael leaned closer, his forehead brushing hers, gentle, intimate, grounding. “You’re not alone,” he said. Her breath hitched. Because he wasn’t speaking as a commander. He was speaking as a man. A man already falling for her. A man she was already falling for. Outside the barrier, the Hunters regrouped. But inside Kael’s arms… Annastasia felt something stronger than fear. Destiny. Connection. And a love powerful enough to bend galaxies.
