Individual rats were jumping onto the poles and running along the poles right into our arms, while others were making their way to our legs and backs. We had to tear them off of ourselves with our hands, and in doing so lacerated our fingers. In the meantime others were already biting our legs. “Let’s retreat to the river!” I shouted.
