The roofs made a good escape, we managed to dodge the faceless creatures, I still couldn't understand how it managed to resist my taser, but this wasn't the time for doubts, I couldn't flinch or we would end up dead. We got to a fire escape stairs not long after, so we started descending. Getting to the streets seemed like the easy part, but now there existed a looming question:
-So, where do we go now?
She sighed, not knowing what to do now, she moved her hand to her head and started thinking, until she finally spoke:
-I... Have a little place where we could hide for a while.
-Then let's go.
-We can't.
-Why not?
-I don't want to risk the creatures finding us, they always seem to be three steps ahead of me. I couldn't even deliver a stupid letter without them killing everything in sight.
-Have you been fighting them for long?
-Few years, maybe.
-But there was a key difference before.
-And what is that?
-You were alone, this time we can fight them together.
-You just don't understand, do you?
-What?
-There is no way to fight them, I have seen them revive, kill people without hesitation.-Her eyes started tearing up.-And I think they killed my sister.
I didn't know what to say, so my mouth stayed shut. She continued:
-I told you it was a long story. We... We need to go.-She said as she wiped her face clean, she grabbed my hand and started running towards a set of streets that lead to the outskirts of the city. My head had like a million questions that probably would never get an answer, the quietness of the journey allowed me to listen plenty of noises, gunshots over there, screaming, people running towards another place, the occasional car; it was maddening. Eventually I grew tired of the silence, so I tried to start some conversation:
-Hey, you seem to know plenty of this creatures, what's the story behind it?
She sighed, clearly not comfortable with the subject, but knew that if we were going to be working together she had to give me some answers, so she started answering my question:
-I don't know what they are exactly. I don't even know how they started following me, but I do know some vague details. They don't appear to show signs of real intelligence, every time that I have encountered them, it just seems like they're being controlled by someone else.
-So they're getting orders?
-Probably, but they don't show signs of being able to read or speak, you already encountered them, so it's obvious that they don't have eyes or a mouth.
I stopped running, my mind tried to connect the little pieces of information that I had, the grey faces, they appeared to be alive and conscious, probably somewhat aware of they're surroundings, but they didn't have eyes, mouth or eyes, that left only one choice. But how were they getting orders?
Tracy kept running without noticing, I had even let go of her hand, but she looked as if she was immersed in her thoughts, probably aware that she couldn't waste much time without moving. At last she noticed the coldness of her hands and turned around to see me moving my hands in the air trying to connect the dots, she turned back and asked me:
-Is everything okay?
-It just doesn't make any sense.
-What doesn't?
-There needs to be a reason why they chase you, but I can't solve it, every piece of information that you give just overlaps. I can't do this, I'm not the best detective, why the hell did you chose me?
-Hey! I chose you because I knew you were good enough to believe me, maybe we need more information to be able to solve this case, and will get it eventually. But right now we need to hide, those a-holes usually keep looking for me in a 15 kilometre radius, so come on.
She grabbed my hand once again and pulled me towards an unknown location, I started thinking how little I knew about the situation I was in, she claimed to know clues that no one managed to get, how the hell did a civilian get this information? Why was she being chased by beings not from this world? The only thing that I knew for sure was that this really was something big.
After about 15 minutes of walking we got to an old bus station, it probably had to have 25 years without an improvement, even managing to escape the remodeling image of the city. We sat on a close bench, trying to avoid my spiraling thoughts, I asked her trying to start a conversation while the bus got there:
-So, where are we going?
-It's a place I haven't visited in almost 15 years.
I chuckled a bit, she was trying to be serious, but I just found funny that every question that I asked was only received by vague answers that only forced me to have more questions. So I answered to her:
-You know that doesn't answer anything, right?
-Why are you laughing at me? I'm sure you don't really want to know more than I tell you.
-Well, we are partners after all, we should be able to have the trust to tell at least something. So I have an idea, I'll tell you something about my past, and then you can reveal something to me, deal?
-Like a date?
-What? No, just to partners discussing our past so we know how we got here, and get to know each other better.
She laughed at me, it was obvious that I was basically describing a date, but for the life of me I had no idea. She was so amused that tears started coming out of her eyes, and she was hitting her leg trying to calm down, I wasn't sure why she was acting this way, so I was left shook trying to explain what was the joke exactly. Eventually she managed to calm down a bit, she cleaned the tears from her face and told me:
-I have to hand it to you, you know how to convince people of things, so sure, you go first.
My brain took some time trying to process the current information, and I'm sure that in that moment I wanted to both die, and just answer the damn question, so I responded:
-Wh... Wait, that means you will do it?
She chuckled a bit and said:
-Sure, but the deal is that you tell me first a story, and seeing how you acted by my answer, I want to know if you ever had a girlfriend.
-A girlfriend? uhmm, I never had time for dating, and in school no one wanted to be with me, well because I was a weirdo. And after the years passed on me, I suppose I just grew accustomed to being alone.
The atmosphere got a bit weird, so she tried lighten it up teasing me:
-So you never had a female attracted to you? That explains a lot of things.
-Hey!
I exclaimed angry as I playfully pushed her arm, I'm sure we would have kept talking for hours, but the bus got to the station, so we got up and went in, it was practically empty except for three other people. We paid our ticket and sat down in the half of the bus. Then I remembered that I never got an answer for my question, so I asked her again:
-Hold on, the deal was that if I told you something from my past you would tell me where we were going.
-Oh, right.-She answered trying to thing of a good way of telling me, until eventually she just decided to tell me:
-We are going to my parents house, I haven't seen them since the disappearance of my sister.
I immediately got quiet not knowing how to respond to that, it was at that moment that I figured why she didn't talk about her past, and I felt like an i***t for asking her that.
