After walking down for 5 floors I got to the main door in the lobby, I took out my key and inserted it, after turning it to the left the lock popped and I was able to walk into the street. It was crowded, I suppose it was normal for a Tuesday morning, but i definitely was not used to being surrounded by so many people. I tried to ignore the constant bumping with my shoulders so I started thinking, something I didn't start doing until now, why the hell was I chosen for this job? The letter mentioned that they knew me, but how would I not know them? A chill went through my back as paranoia started settling in, was I being followed?
After a short stroll I got to the bus station where I had to wait 7 minutes and 19 seconds for it to arrive, trying my best to remain calm and looking over my shoulder discreetly it finally stopped and I was about to go inside, I gave a quick look to the back, it was flooding with people, to the point where only one tiny spot was available, definitely not a good place to be in case I was being followed, so I went down and started walking again, according to the map the place was about 3.2 miles and it was only a 13 minute walk.
At first the sky was blue, the kind were the sun shines brightly, there are no clouds around and you can even enjoy some light breeze while you walk, a few minutes passed and I looked again, this time a grey cloud could be seen, it was a big one, probably a storm was coming. It took a while, but I finally got to the morgue, it looked like a nice, well maintained place. As I walked towards the door I felt a stinging sensation, it was strong, as if someone was watching me, I decided to ignore it, as it was probably nothing.
Walking inside I noticed a white lobby, a plant in each corner served as decoration and gave a little color to the room, 3 small chairs were put facing an empty desk, that was weird I thought, I got closer and saw a little bell in the floor, and the registry book opened in a specific date, exactly the day the victim died. I decided to take it, I hoped that a fast glance would permit me to find information about this stranger that offered me leads. As I started turning the pages I couldn't help but notice some details, the book was folded in some pages, there were dates that didn't exist, possibly because they were pulled from it, but the strangest part was the fact that no other corpses got delivered after the murder, at least they weren't written. I turned the pages to get back and looked, I got lucky as the data were the body was currently stored was in there, I glanced to both sides of the morgue and noticed that no one was there, so I decided to kick start this investigation with a key piece of evidence, I put away the notebook in one of my free pockets, and I started walking inside the morgue.
It was a longer walk than I originally anticipated, the hall seamed almost endless until I got to the freezer, at least that was what the signed called it, unfortunately my luck run out and a metal door was blocking my way. The good part is that I foresaw this moment so I had prepared beforehand, I put my hand into my pocket and took a small hair pin that I used as a lock-pick, I put it in my mouth and bit it so it wouldn't move, then I took a small screwdriver which I used to turn the locks easier. I got down and started working on my thing, when I suddenly heard faint footsteps behind me, as I was about to turn my head to face the person behind I felt a hand on my shoulder and heard:
-¿What the hell do you think you're doing?
I immediately dropped the screwdriver and the pin and put my hands in the air, I was hoping that the person that had catch me didn't tried to accuse me of attempted theft, or tampering with proof. My body started turning to watch the person behind me, and I was certainly surprised, it was a woman, she had a trench coat covering what it seemed like one of those bad science puns t-shirts, she was using jeans and sneakers, that wasn't what I was expecting, I started plotting a plan, maybe if I pushed her I could escape and try entering another day. A drop of sweat passed through my cheek and fell to the floor, this plan had to work, I couldn't afford to go to jail, not when I finally got a lead for this cold case. She seamed to notice my obvious discomfort so she told me:
-Dude, chill.
-Wh... What? I responded as I was confused with her intentions and with this encounter.
-How can I know you are telling the truth? As I recalled there was mention of people following the writer.
-I wrote the "True heretics expect mortal organs, reality gruesomely utters effect" bit, definitely not something someone would memorize, are you convinced?
-You passed the test for now.
-Eh, close enough I guess.
She started walking towards me, I didn't understand what was happening, she shoved me to the side, she put her hand inside the coat and took out a little key, as she opened the door with ease she signaled me to go inside. I decided to obey, once I got there I saw that everything was empty, all of the cold chamber trays were outside, except for one.
We got closer, she grabbed the handle and applied force until it opened, when it did the cold escaped and the room got colder, she seamed not affected by it as she continued to show me what was found, and started explaining to me:
-Okay, so the corpse got here about a month ago, right?
-I don't know about that, I wasn't here.
-It was a rhetorical question.
-Oh, okay, move along.
-Now, let's observe the parts that were revealed to the public, there are 5 cuts in each extremity, and symbols written across her chest.
She uncovered the corpse and showed me the gruesome marks, who would be unhinged enough to do something like this? As I thought I remembered to brace for the putrid smell, but that never came, my logic told me that maybe it had something to do with the body being in a freezer for this long. She continued:
-Now to the two important discoveries that I made, the first is that she is a total Jane Doe.
-What do you mean?
-Even though this case was discussed everywhere for months, not a single person gave the call to tell the police that they recognized her face, that is a weird detail.
-Well yeah, but that doesn't prove anything.
-Not until you hear the next part, notice how her neck is swollen and... Well broken.
-Yeah.
-I believe that she wasn't actually killed by the murderer.
-What? What do you mean?
-This is definitely the signs of a suicide, she hanged herself.
-There is no way to prove in what order the wounds were made.
-Actually there is.-She started pointing at the cuts in her extremities.-you notice the cuts right?
-Of course.
-Okay, as you can see, the arm isn't splashed with any blood, anywhere.
-So?
-After you die, blood stops pumping in your body, now there are to possibilities, either the killer took the impossible job of perfectly cleaning her after she died, or there wasn't blood in there anymore.
-Is that your only lead? That proves nothing.
-And now, let's get to the interesting part, you can obviously notice a key feature missing from the corpse.
-No...
-Aren't you a detective?
-Well yeah but...
-The smell! The body isn't going putrid.
-Doesn't the freezer avoid that?
-Normally, it does. But there is something apparently no one knows.
-And that is?
-My friend used to work in this placed, she loved working here. Until one day when she called me in the middle of the night very agitated, that morning she had received the body and started prepping the body.
-So what happened?
-In the middle of the call I heard two men in the distance talking faintly, they were using a language didn't recognize, they sounded closer and closer until the call got cut. She disappeared without a trace. The city soon cut the light because no one was paying it. I eventually did it, so I came to check for any leads where she could have been taken, that took me to the freezer and I noticed that the body never started decomposing.
-I still don't understand.
-This isn't a real corpse, the energy was off for weeks, there is no way that it never started decomposing.
-Then what are you trying to say?
-I think we are getting involved in a bigger scheme than what we anticipated.
