CHAPTER NINE Roseline POV The leader rogue’s words echoed through the forest like a curse. “She is the girl of the prophecy. the one who will die and return in moonfire!” Kael’s head snapped toward me, his expression carved with shock and something dangerously close to fear. I couldn’t look at him. There wasn’t time. The forest trembled as more rogues stepped from the shadows. Ten… twelve… fifteen. My breathing quickened. They didn’t come to fight the clan. They came to kill me. Kael’s aura erupted, swallowing the clearing in a surge of dominance so powerful the air itself seemed to bow. “Anyone who touches her,” he growled, eyes blazing silver, “dies under my claws.” My heart twisted. Why now? Why protect me now—after rejecting me? After humiliating me? The rogue leader smirked. “How noble, Alpha,” he sneered. “Pity you failed to realize that your greatest threat wasn’t us..." His glowing eyes slid to me. “it was her.” Kael lunged before the rogue could finish his sentence. Their bodies collided with a thunderous crash, sending mud and leaves exploding into the air. Warriors charged, the forest filling with snarls, blood, and tearing flesh. But more rogues kept pushing through, rushing toward me. Kael roared, slashing one aside, eyes wild. “Stay behind me, Roseline!” But I couldn’t. I wasn’t meant to hide. Not anymore. A rogue lunged at me from the side. I turned, too slow. He was too fast. His claws reached for my throat And the world ignited. Silver fire burst from my palms, spiraling outward in a brilliant explosion that sent the rogue flying backward, screaming as moonlight burned through his skin. Every warrior froze. Even Kael. He stared at me like he had never seen me before. “Moonfire…” he whispered, voice unreadable. “She really… she truly has it.” My hands trembled as the light flickered and danced over my skin. It felt alive, hot, powerful, terrifying. I staggered. My chest burned. My breathing tightened. This power wasn’t meant to stay awake long… the goddess had said so. Another rogue charged. I tried to lift my hands again, but pain ripped through my ribs, stealing my breath. The light sputtered. The rogue was almost on me. Kael moved faster than a heartbeat. He grabbed the rogue by the throat and slammed him into the ground, snapping his neck with a single twist. His eyes snapped to mine. “You’re overusing it,” he barked. “You’ll tear your soul apart!” I backed away from him, gasping. Hot sparks raced through my veins, too wild, too bright. “Don’t, don’t come close,” I managed. Kael’s voice dropped into something dangerously soft. “You’ll burn yourself alive.” My wolf whimpered inside me, weak, flickering. The prophecy whispered across my mind: She will fall… She will bleed… Her body will break. No. Not yet. Not here. I forced myself to stand tall. A rogue behind Kael lunged I saw him before Kael did. “Kael!” I shouted. He turned too late. Without thinking, I threw myself forward, moonfire surging violently through me in one last desperate burst, striking the rogue square in the chest. The explosion shook the trees. But the blast sent me flying backward. Pain tore through my entire body. I hit the ground hard, vision spinning. I heard Kael’s scream. “ROSELINE!” He dropped to his knees beside me, hands shaking as he touched my shoulders, checking for breathing, for wounds, for signs of life. The silver glow in my veins pulsed erratically, too bright, too fast. Like a dying star. Kael cupped my face, voice trembling with a desperation I never expected from him. “Stay with me. Don’t you dare close your eyes.” I tried to speak, but blood filled my mouth. My vision blurred. The prophecy whisper returned: She will die once. Kael’s breath hitched as he saw the light flickering violently beneath my skin. “Roseline, STOP. You’re burning out. You’re..” His voice cracked. “you’re killing yourself.” I released a strangled gasp. “I… I can’t stop it…” Kael pulled me into his arms, holding me against his chest as if he could shield me with his own strength. “Look at me,” he whispered hoarsely. “Don’t leave. Not like this.” For a heartbeat… I wished I could stay. But the moonfire surged one last time. Silver light erupted from my chest... Kael cried out as the blast flung him backward. My body arched in agony. My wolf let out a weak, final howl. And then... Everything went silent. My heart slowed. My breath stopped. The light faded from my skin. And darkness swallowed me whole. The last thing I heard… was Kael’s broken voice: “Roseline.....NO!”
