Chapter 3: Rejected Bonds

Chapter 3: Rejected Bonds (Scarlett's POV) I woke to the familiar ache in my body, evidence of last night's intense mating. Steven's arm was draped possessively around my waist, his skin burning hot against mine. The marks he'd left across my skin tingled, stubbornly refusing to heal despite my natural abilities. His dominance had been different last night - more forceful, almost desperate. Carefully, I extracted myself from his grip and padded across the room. Our den felt suffocating in the darkness. I reached for the heavy curtains, wanting to let in some morning light. A low growl stopped me in my tracks. "Return to bed, Scarlett." Steven's Alpha command wrapped around me like steel bands. My wolf whimpered at the order, forcing my feet to move back toward the bed. I watched as he simply rolled away, presenting his broad back to me. The hollow feeling in our mate bond made my chest ache. Even after last night, the emotional distance between us felt wider than ever. Frustrated, I reached for my communication crystal on the bedside table. It was buzzing with activity - clearly, the Lunar Alliance Celebration had given the pack plenty to gossip about. "Claire from Shadow Valley performed the most graceful moonstone offering ceremony..." "The Shadow Valley warriors showed impressive discipline..." "Alpha Marcus seemed weaker than usual..." I scrolled through the messages, noting how Steven's presence was carefully downplayed. It was typical - his high status meant most wolves avoided discussing him directly in pack communications. But the underlying message was clear: The heir had returned to claim his position. With Alpha Marcus's weakening condition, speculation about power shifts within the pack was inevitable. My crystal lit up with another notification. Multiple messages from pack members, all subtly fishing for information about Steven. "Quite the Alpha dominance display last night," Evelyn's mindlink echoed through our den, accidentally repeating twice. "The whole pack felt those tremors!" I felt Steven's consciousness stir through our bond, but he merely rose from the bed and headed to the bathing chamber. No acknowledgment, no response to my obvious embarrassment. The sound of running water filled our den as I noticed a scroll on his bedside table. "Northern Territory Expansion Proposal," the title read. I couldn't help myself - I started reading. The plans were ambitious, detailing new hunting grounds and strategic positions. My inner healer immediately spotted the challenges. The northern territories were notorious for their dangerous terrain and toxic vegetation. Without proper medical support, wolves could suffer serious injuries during battles or hunts. When Steven emerged from the bathing chamber, I was still absorbed in the plans. "We should establish healing stations throughout the new territory," I suggested eagerly. "I could train other healers to handle the specific challenges of northern fauna." Steven's expression remained impassive as he dressed. "You can visit once the territory is secured." "But implementing healing protocols during the expansion would prevent unnecessary casualties," I pressed. "I have experience with-" "This isn't a healing grounds experiment," he cut me off harshly. "Territory expansion requires warriors, not healers." The dismissal stung. "I successfully managed emergency healing at the Lunar Alliance-" "That was a celebration, Scarlett," he scoffed. "You'd need the Moon Goddess's direct blessing to be considered for this military operation." Tears pricked at my eyes, but I forced them back. "My healing stations have saved countless wolves during previous territory disputes. The celebration was just a favor to Evelyn-" I stopped myself, recognizing the futility of my argument. Instead, I knelt on our bed, assuming the traditional position of submission to my Alpha mate. Steven, now fully dressed in his imposing Alpha attire, didn't even glance my way as he left our den. His dominant aura lingered, suffocating me in the empty space he left behind.
